I have been teaching private security and the SIA license training in the past. Gave it up because the sort of individuals and low wages has caused individuals to have jobs in security that have no clue in regards to what they legally can do or indeed what authority they have, which is little to none, unless you are on private property. Now the very first thing you need to understand as a security officer, no matter what the bosses of the contract tell you to do, ignore anything you know to be a load of bollocks and in fact illegal. Second when new to a site, make sure you are aware of the boundaries of the property you are looking after. Don't take the word of any boss. Lastly, have common sense, always be polite and in no way offensive. If you do this, you will never have an issue with anyone filming you. In fact I love them to film me, as I know it will always put me in a positive light!

The police had no cause to converse with you. If someone informed police of an intruder in theur home, the police would just give you a incident number, thats if they answer in the first instance. Also if these jumped up nutters make a false accusatuon they should be fined automatically.

These security and other people put in these positions should know basic photography laws. If they are not aware then wasting police time is not the answer and should be fined when they do. These official companies that hire these people should train them better so that they act professionally.

I live in Leicester that open area is publicly accessible, it was originally roads, pavements and businesses. When the centre was built the Highcross had to allow public access at all times as agreed with the council.

Hi a y n, This looks like a very interesting site, all the signs and barriers all over the place and nothing is happening!, apart from the 'security' goons, demanding an explanation of what you are doing, yet they obviously know what you are doing, she says they don't like you filming their building. I suppose that is because they are doing bad things there and want to keep it secret. Karen rocks up and start a fire!. she gets her marching orders!. One of the potential answers to the why are you filming is to say that you tried to clean your teeth with the camera but it was not good!, then you tried tying your shoelaces with it but that didn't work either so you had to settle for filming with it. They also seem to be having a lot of trouble understanding that if private property is open to the public then it is open to as much visiting and filming as you like, if they want to insist that it is really private and you should not be there they must 'prove' that in court, only a judge can make that determination. When the real cop turns up he seems to be willing to be much more sensible, apart from the issue of the private property, that had you been doing so it would have been none of his business!, being an entirely civil matter, unless of course you were doing damage or being violent. You have to apply to the local council to have yellow lines painted on private sites. You have to apply for a legal process called a TRO, traffic regulation order which the council may approve or refuse.
Take a look at ‘Where’s the path’. There are public rights of way running all through that shopping center. The Wagamama you walked past was on Highcross Lane.

That footpath is a public Right of way. Private land or not nobody, not even the police, can make you leave unless you're breaking the law. The security that marched you out had no authority to ask you to leave. As far as filming goes despite been privately owned it's a public place and you don't need permission to film and as such your doing nothing illegal, they can ask to leave shops if you're filming but their rules and policy's don't trump your right to be on a public right of way.
