This is not meant to be the movie spoiler, its from the original novel. But since the movie is a honest adaptation from the Novel, you can say its movie spolier too.. ;)
1. Adithya Karikalan is called to Kadambur by Nandini to talk about the division of power and gets killed. The suspects are Periya Pazhuvetaraiyar, Nandhini, Vandiyathevan and Pandiya rebels. The author has kept the readers in a cliffhanger till the end as to who really killed Karikalan.
2. Arunmozhi is rescued by Poonguzhali/Senthan and is kept in a Buddhist monastery in Nagapattinam to recover from injuries and deadly flu that follows. There is chaos everywhere in Chola kingdom. Everyone are convinced Arunmozhi is no more, and since Karikalan also is killed they select Madhuranthiakan as the successor to kingdom.
3. Mandakini (aka Oomai Rani) who is played by Aishwarya is indeed the mother of Nandini. She was the ex-lover of the Chozha king. This makes Nandini the step-sister to Karikalan/Arunmozhi/Kundhavai. Mandakini goes to meet the king secretly but gets killed trying to save the king from Pandiya rebels.
4. Arunmozhi (Ponniyin Selvan) emerges from the monastery and is willing to let go of the right to power for the sake of Madhurantakan. But Madhurantakan is now hellbent to get power in his hands by any means. It is revealed that Madhurantakan is not true heir to kingdom and not even from Kshatriya clan. That is why his mother Sembian Madhevi denies him the right to power all along as only Kshatriyas are allowed to become king.
5. Sendhan Amudhan is rightful heir to throne and he is the son who got misplaced by Mandakinis's sister (who Senthan Amudhan thinks as mother all along). Madhurantakan gets killed, and Sendhan Amudhan is crowned as King. He marries Poonguzhali (yes, she finally accepts his proposal).
6. Arunmozhi and Vandiyathevan works under the new king (Sendhan Amudhan, who is now called as Madhuranthaka Thevar) taking care of North and South armies. Arunmozhi marries Vanathi, and Vandiyathevan marries Kundhavai.
7. Arunzmozhi has to wait for another 20 years till the passing of Madhurantakan to become the greatest king of all time titled, Raja Raja Chozan.

This is not based on the real Chola dynasty history. It is based on the novel 'ponniyin selvan' by famous Tamil writer and media person kalki krishnamoorthy. Why cholas are important to Indian History. This is only biggest Indian empire which established their control on overseas lands and had best earliest navel force in the world (even earlier than European rulers). Real and Important King in the Chola dynasty is Raja Raja Chalan, who built the famous Brihadeeswara Temple. This character is played in the movie version by Jayam Ravi. But in this novel and this movie, Friend of Raja Raja Cholan's character is given importance. So this movie does not give 100% details about The Great Raja Raja Cholan. It is partly fiction.
