I disagree with the characterization of the Marquis as “cold” and “distant.” He clearly is somebody who wants comfort and a close relationship (and knows how to comfort those he cares about) but cannot due to his various deep frustrations of his very tragic situation. He was coerced into marrying not one, but FOUR wives that he didn’t want (and at least one was tricked), constantly has to deal with the feminine competition toxicity that annoys him greatly, not even having a supportive mother who can really understand what he goes through, and all of this on top of working tirelessly full time with the danger of offending the emperor which would result in the slaughter of his entire family (no pressure there right?). And now, he finally met a wife that he remotely liked, yet she refuses to even have sex with him. God if I were him I would’ve gone crazy already.
He kept his emotions bottled up after the tragic death of his father/brother. He had to become the man of the house and to do so he became distant. His mother was a major problem because she forced him to marry multiple women even though she knew it wasn't what he wanted. He was never happy with either of his wives especially his legal wife. He suffered in silence for a very long time because he didn't have anyone to confide in. Shiyi was different but it took him a minute to see that she wasn't like her sister or the other concubines. He was able to open up to her and begin to fall in love for the very first time. It took a little longer for Shiyi to fall in love with him. First impressions are hard to overcome. When she met him..she thought he was cheating on her sister with Lianfang. It took her a minute to warm up to him. He had to gain her trust before she would let him in. Once she did they became an unbeatable team.
@@shontelagrone9537 none of these mean he’s cold. Being cold and stay stoic are completely two different things. Just because you are emotionally expressive doesn’t mean you are a warm person, and just because you are stoic does not mean you are a cold person. The Marquis was very warm to ShiYi from the very beginning, so he is not cold. Whereas ShiYi was putting on this nice girl face but constantly rejects intimacy, that’s much more cold.
@@luceafarul579 no...I'm not saying he's cold..what I'm saying is there is a reason he was distant from the people in his life until Shiyi came along. He finally had someone that wasn't trying to use him...that wasn't interested in his money or his glory. She cared about other people. She wasn't selfish. She was everything he needed..which is why he started to let his guards down with her. So I never got a sense that he was cold at all.
