- In May 2022, I bought the USA Rail Pass, and rode Amtrak over 9,000 miles around the United States. This short film attempts to capture that experience.
A map I made of the Amtrak long-distance train routes: anthonyottati.com/amtrak-long-distance/
Some pictures from the trip: anthonyottati.com/usa-rail-pass/
Shot on Sony A7 III, Tamron 17-28
I'm an oldie at 79 but my wife and i did 18500 miles on Amtrak and Viarail back in 2015. Brilliant trip and a wonderful way to see North America. We're Aussies by the way.
Great production. I will be using Rail Pass in May for 16 days. Coast to Coast and back. Looking forward to my trip even more now!
thank you! enjoy your trip!
So inspiring! Makes me want to get out of the 9-5 and explore the country. Great video
thank you!
You produced a wonderful video! As a retired Amtrak Employee, I have ridden most of the trains you showcased. I was surprised that you did not go to New York City and Seattle. Your choice of the "Cardinal" was excellent. It is one of my favorites. Thanks for showcasing Amtrak!!!
thank you for your service to Amtrak! wanted to go to NYC and Seattle, but couldn't quite fit them in my schedule, will have to buy another rail pass someday!
Super cool video😊
I've been wanting to bike across the USA for a couple of years now but for some reason I think I need to do this first.
I drove across the country a few time but felt it was way too fast. I also felt trapped by the highway route.
To me there is nothing better than being in a unfamiliar town on a super quiet day enjoying conversations with strangers.
Thanks for the vid.
Once in The 90s, I took The Sunset Limited from Los Angeles to South Florida. As far as I can remember, I used a Pass for Basic Fare, and payed a Surcharge for Sleeping Cabin.
you're video is BEAUTIFUL, I'm a Model Railroader, I collector I have HO Scale Amtrak,
I'm a collector of Amtrak Superliners
How many days in the train?
@@TheMrsrousse I do not remember.
This was a beautiful film. And to think the narrator still only saw a portion of Amtrak's extensive network. I hope the U.S. will invest more heavily in its passenger rail, to make it thrive.
Really well made, I would be so proud if this was something I made.
The best USA Rail Pass video with an immense amount of information. Congratulations!
Yes, very nicely done. I especially liked the tie in to the national parks.
thank you!
Going to be doing the Rail Pass early next year. Tampa to DC to San Francisco to Seattle to DC then back to Tampa. I cant wait.
I visited the USA several times and I have combined car with train, Amtrak has pleasantly surprised me. National parks are my weakness and this video moved me. In a few months I leave for a two-month trip from Spain. I will start this time in LA and return to Madrid from Boston. Great country and this work is inspiring.Thank you
thank you! enjoy your trip in Spain. ¡Buen Viaje!
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing journey..
Thanks for watching!
Very nicely done!
Very nice video!
Excellent video - and an excellent adventure. Thanks for sharing it!
Sounds like a peaceful adventure. Also great video!
Excellent video, Anthony. Good editing and just enough labels and narration to keep the viewer oriented. I love your thoughtful commentary including the message at the end. Happy Travels!
thank you!
Nice job. Great video.
I am going to do a "Circle" around the states in Nov. for my 60th. Birthday. Start in Sacamento up to Seattle then over to NYC with 5 hour layover in Chicago then down to D.C, then off to New Orleans, then to Dallas by way of yep Chicago, then to Los Angeles and then back home to San Francisco.
sounds like a great trip! enjoy!
Didn’t understand that once after your first trip with the rail pass. The 30 day countdown starts. That’s the reason I won’t buy another pass.
yeah, that can make it challenging for sure! I planned it to fit as much as possible into the 30 day window.
Nice video - as a numbers guy, I'm willing to bet that you spent more money on food over a month than the cost of the pass. Good for you to take the time and actually do it!
thank you! I'll have to think about it more, but yeah it's probably close. didn't eat in the cafe car, just bought a ton of food from grocery stores. tried to spend 10 dollars a day on food, but then with some restaurants, that probably put me close to $500.
You have to eat no matter where you are!
Excellent video! I’d like to hear more about how to enjoy coach travel on Amtrak. Tips for sleeping? (On the floor!!??). What foods to pack? Thanks and best wishes with all you do.
thank you! I sleep pretty good if no one is sleeping next to me. if there are people next to me, the floor becomes a good option. i was never bothered sleeping in lounge cars, and if you curl up in a ball you can even sleep under seat.
very nice vid tc
How much money did you spend on the tickets?
He said he got the rail pass. Easy to look up on Amtrak. 10 segment rail pass. $500. Must complete all travel within 120 days, once 1st segment is taken, you have 30 days to use the remaining 9 segments. Segment is also easy to see defined on Amtraks site. 1 ride- it can be 70 miles or hundreds of miles. A segment can be Los Angeles to New Orleans if you take the Sunset Limited straight through.
With the the rail pass you only have 10 segments p!! For example Philadelphia to Florida is 1 segment
Why did you need to sleep on the floor?
Unfortunately your experience will now be marred by high prices and availability problems caused by limited equipment
Never do amtrack, very bad customer service, an Racist employee
I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience on Amtrak.
my god with the f'ing cringe music
i miss the older trains . . . with the bubble-top observation decks
I miss the old telegraph line that usually ran parallel to the tracks
new trains are nice no doubt, but the old trains were just more exciting...
