- If ye love me by Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585), recorded at low pitch by members of The Gesualdo Six, directed by Owain Park.
This track comes from The Gesualdo Six’s first album, ‘English Motets’, a programme linking two hundred years of music from medieval and Tudor England (available here: bit.ly/2Fmp8Od).
“Weavers of rich and plangent aural tapestries, The Gesualdo Six meld style and substance with beguiling sure-footedness. An auspicious debut.” - BBC Music Magazine
“The fine-grained texture of solo voices allows us to savour the amazing harmonic pungency of English sacred music, which at times seems almost modernist. It is a wonderful achievement.” - The Telegraph

If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father,
and he will give you another comforter, that he may bide with you for ever,
e’vn the spirit of truth.
John 14: 15-17

About the music
While all composers in Tudor England were flexible to the period’s shifting religious requirements, none was quite as skilful at reinvention as Tallis, whose music remains absolutely consistent in its quality, even while his style changes dramatically. Intelligibility of text is all in ‘If ye love me’, and one whose guiding principle seems to be Archbishop Cranmer’s edict that sacred music should use only one note per syllable. Tallis opens the work with a clear declamation of the text, emphasizing the word ‘commandments’ and leaving his listener in no doubt of the importance placed on learning and teaching in the new language of the Church. Despite continuing in a four-part polyphonic texture, none of the clarity of text is lost, with beautiful descending phrases passed around the voices.

The risk of the slow tempo was so worth it. Plus gorgeous tuning. Aaaah
I had the pleasure of hearing the ensemble sing this last night in the Cathedral of St. James here in Seattle. It stopped time.
It is amazing to me that this doesn't have over 1,000,000 views.
Too true--only 29,000 blessed. But what a blessing!
I have sung this piece as an alto but this pitch and pacing are perfectly glorious, so rich, so Tallis. Thank you for keeping Early Music alive today.
I have conducted this piece for 30 years and this is a total revelation, an epiphany. Cannot possibly thank you enough. Can hardly catch my breath for the tears that started flowing at "E'en the sprit of Truth'" Simply glorious! Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, Paul. It's one of our favourite pieces :)
I, too, have both sung and conducted this exquisitely beautiful anthem Innumerable times. But this rendition vastly surpasses them all, and any others that I have heard -- so typical of the interpretations of this great ensemble.
The bass has such a rich and full tone, it covers the chord in almost a blanket of warmth. So beautiful
As a low bass I appreciate this comment. We often get ignored! This wonderful group always inspires with it's fine balance and sensitive interpretation.
@@garywait3231 No good director ignores the bass!
who is the bass voice please ?
@@williamlewis8741 If im not mistaken it is Owain Park himself who directs The Gesualdo Six.
@@micahblauer777 you're quite right. i'm quite keen to hear some of his previous recordings with his bass voice
That bass, like a foundation of solid rock! Though, all the other voices, magnificent, too!
With Renaissance polyphony, it's not enough just to sing the notes and rhythms; there has to be a focus on the thematic material. The Gesualdo Six does this superbly here. Each entrance of the little motifs in each voice is accented so perfectly. It really makes this short piece come alive. Wonderful work, gentlemen.
Well said. And well-chosen point. Renaissance choirs I sang in could sometimes use to hear this advice repeated.
Lower, darker, more thoughtful than usual. Luminous sound. This is perhaps my favourite version of one of my favourite hymns. Love you guys
It's my first time hearing their rendition of this classic Tallis piece of music. I'm lost for words, there aren't enough to really describe just how simply perfect this is! ❤
This is what I call, absolute perfect intonation! Hats off, gentlemen!
Obviously corrected by computer.
I've listened to a lot of versions of this recently and I have to say I've not heard one to beat it. Just exquisite!
Thank you so much, Lynda!
Ok, let's return back some 500 years and try again. We clearly lost our way.
Uhm 🌚
One of the greatest compositions of its age - music that is for all time. And by far the greatest performance of this piece that I've heard.
Easily the best performance of this piece.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing the Gesualdo Six a few days ago performing this wonderful piece alongside many others whilst promoting their English Motets CD.....
Sublime...a slice of paradise...mind blowing 😍
The same, not long ago, in Ljubljana, Slovenia!
Wow! Sounds very rich in that key signature.
I walked in to this at my wedding and this version was so beautiful.
Wow what a GREAT choice....
i literally watch this video once a week and i am still astonished by how incredibly well this is sung. Thank you so much
Басы!! Можно с ума сойти от вашей красоты.
There is no way to properly thank you for this lovely rendition, and superb sound recording!! This replaces all of my other favorite versions! From now on, I will look to you first.
my God, you bring tears in my eyes. this is so beautiful
A truly sublime and masterful chorus from Thomas Tallis, but yet done with exquisite harmony, especially with the counter tenor addition. Thanks for sharing!
These guys are so good. What marvelous consort singing. Bravo, meet you in paradise!
Wow! My goosebumps have got goosebumps
Peter Craddock exponentially meta goosebumps
Gorgeous. Just absolutely gorgeous. The lower tonal setting just adds to the conveying the true meaning of the words. Superb. TT would undoubtedly love this.
This is the most beautiful version I've heard. Beautiful
I cannot stop listening to this, guys. You got the proverbial bath to the perfect temperature.
A wonderful version. Full credit to each part, when done as a quartet.
An unusual take on an old favourite. A fabulous, rich sound.
What a Joy

A wonderful performance, heartfelt, and beautifully executed!
not even those statues could resist to stop and listen
Gorgeous tenderness and warmth as your passion makes this perfromance stunning. Listening to this many times over again, thanks. Owain you rock on the bass line like an organ pedal.
Having sung this for nearly 183 years, I ADORED their rendition of this glorious offering!!! Must alert my friend T. Tertius!!! 👍
I am utterly knocked off my feet. Thank you so much.
Heard them with it yesterday at Berlin Philharmonie chamber music hall ... Touching and overwhelming, as many other pieces of the concert. And all just perfect.
An outstanding performance. Different to many others, but works very well with great meaning
Das war einfach schön
Such a sublime sound from just four voices; well done, gentlemen.
This is absolutely wonderful🎶
This has that lovely resonant quality like when strings play A 415. Just beautiful
Tenor with glasses has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard
Just got done recording this with my glee club yesterday. Wonderful piece, and absolutely wonderful finally having the chance to sing with my brothers in song again.
That was some gorgeous singing. Brilliant

A tall glass of cool water on a hot day, thank you.

Kako savršeno usklađeni glasovi u jedinstvenoj boji.
Great rendition at this pitch great musicality Thankyou as always.
Just beautiful. Unlike others, I liked the tempo - slower than often but this makes the words so clear and full of meaning. Listen again to the "forever" for example.
All voics heard, yet great blend. Great interpretation
Thanks
Perfection....
Geesss.. who is the man on bass.. you put my bass voice on low level dude..
Thank you once again!

Awesome!
Absolutely exquisite rendition, as heard a week ago in the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall in Ljubljana. May you prosper!
Simply superbly perfect.
Delightful!
Gorgeous.
simply awe inspiring
I am in awe of how well these singers shape and phrase the individual lines while maintaining such a beautiful group sound, especially in the low key.
I would have preferred it just a hair faster to lend some more flow to the music (it is usually notated in cut time), but to each their own. Perhaps you wanted to have us savour the beautiful voices at the slow tempo!!
Wow!!
Brilliant
Very well done!
magnifique !
Magnificent...
Beautiful
Wow. I'm blown away! You guys are on another level! 😮🤯
Superb.
Magnificent!
Nice!
Just amazing !!1 wonderfulll!!!
Absolutely lovely and perfect!
OOOOF the bass hits differently. Wow...Thanks for sharing it!
This is too beautiful.. i just cant....
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Please correct your printed text above: "he will" => "he shall".
This is the most moving of the dozens of UA-cam recordings of this work! The low pitch plus the slower tempo are absolutely mind-boggling!
The depth of emotion and warmth through pure, port wine voices, is a Devine achievement. A constant level of smooth tenderness.
I wish to see the other two singers..Why can I not?
The workshop environment is pleasing.. but I miss two of the whole !!!! Why?
because it's in four parts.
Our ancestors left us an amazing inheritance.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Very Good job of Tallis music, Please do " T
hat Virgin's child".
2:41 - ... .. Gentlemen. I have no words.
Are those...overtones...? Someone please confirm because WOW
You can easily hear the harmonics/ overtones in the bass's rich voice. Beautiful
Close-ups of two of the four...of the six.

Their albums, including English Motets which has this song on it, have now been added to Spotify
Why does the camera never show the two dudes on the right? (Best version of this though)
