my boyfriend and i made this for valentine's day. It was really fun to make! we used 9 apples instead of 16 and the next time we won't be using as much butter in the soaking mixture since it felt kinda gross hahaha. afterwards we did put it in the oven on a low tempeture for about 10 minutes so the apples would be a bit softer and the butter would look and taste a bit better. we also just used some custard powder, sugar and milk instead of the custard recipe you gave us and that was a lot easier and cheaper and it worked just fine. over all it's a lovely cake and we really enjoyed it!
+Jasmijn Sagel Im glad to read your comment! As many people before, I've asked myself how do I cut it. It is a giant mess with the apples and the custard? Can you serve it still good looking? Or do you have any tips? Excuse me for any spelling/grammar mistakes :)
Anna L. I suggest not using as much butter as in the video because it will feel very gross. We also used tangerine juice instead of orange juice because we couldn't find any oranges and used more of that than put in the video also. Tangerines are sweeter than oranges so if you are going to use that keep in mind that you won't have to use as much sugar. Also pick out the apple pieces you can use before you put them in the mixture, this will save you a lot of mess. If you let the custard cool down just a little bit before you put the roses in and you use the knife as shown in the video you won't have any problem with the roses coming undone or anything. Do keep in mind that you shouldnt fill the crust up with custard all the way as it will push a little bit to the side and you might spill a little. If this does happen you can just easily scrape it off. When you're done you can put your cake back in the oven for just 10-15 minutes on a low tempeture to make the butter settle and make the apples a little softer and taste better without it losing its colour. Then put it in the refrigerator so the custard can harden. I have a picture of how mine turned out on my instagram, instagram.com/jasmijncath , and i think it turned out beautifully. Good luck!
+How To Cook That It's really awesome that you are willing to go through all of the time & effort that it takes to do those experiments and then share it with us! :-)
That's a great solution for the red skins. I cooked my slices briefly in water with cinnamon red hots melted in it, then rolled then in rolled strips of puff pastry that I'd brushed with warmed and strained raspberry jam. I baked them in mini tart pans. They turned out a lovely deep pink with red skins.I'm going to try yours next.
I didn't know you watched her videos! So cool seeing one of my favorite you tubers on another account, I was literally just watching one of your videos before this one XD
This looks sooo good! What an amazing trick to get the apples to soften. The roses look so elegant and tasty with the custard. For me, I don`t know if I have the patience to make all those beautiful roses so I think it would look cool if I make mine tarts using the same techniques. Once again another fantastic and inspiring video!
+How to Cook That Wow. That looks so cool!!! How did you manage to come up with the idea to soften the apples because that is just soooo clever- using the citrus/butter to not only flavour it, but also keep it from going brown, AND making it flexible! I love the stuff that you do, and sharing it with everyone is so great of you. Keep up the great work!
Omg! It's sooo pretty. And I feel very weird, but somehow so satisfying to watch the ready cake. I wish there was a final picture to see how it looks after cutting.
It is so amazing that LG helped you to do baking!I really love your videos and I want to see many videos from you!Love you Ann and also thank you to LG!

Very, very clever. Great idea with just changing the flavour of the apples instead of cooking them. I keep this is mind for next mother's day and make this together with my sister! Keep up the good work!
I did this recipe and it turned out amazing! Thank you so much! I've found it's better to keep the apples in the mixture a little longer though, so I think I'll do that next time. (Also with flour and extra butter the remaining mixture makes wonderful dog-friendly cookies)
Waw! Now that's a full bouquet, specially for real gourmands. 😁😁😁 Many thanks, Mrs.. Have a pleasant weekend you and your whole family. Kind regards from Portugal. Cheers. ✨
So pretty! 🌹 I once made something similar for a party but they were more like individual rose tarts. I was younger & didn't know how to use a mandolin, so my dumb ass stood there finely slicing apples for 2 hours ;-; This technique is a lifesaver!! Thanks so much for sharing ❤
Hi Ann - In the video I noticed that the convection fan was on where you talked about preheating the oven to 350 deg. F. Please clarify, should we be using the convection fan to bake the crust, or not? I entertain, bake/cook a lot and I'm always looking for recipes with the WOW Factor, so can't wait to try this it looks so beautiful. Looking at what you demo on UA-cam's sidebar, you're a very talented lady and I think I'm going to enjoy your site enormously!! And thanks for this one indeed!

I'm curious too

It's not her idea actually. I made this cake last year for my granny using the same recipe but from the other site ☺️
apple pie and custard is one of my favourite foods - so this looks like a great combo! :) Thanks Ann
Also, if you want to keep the apples from browning on the fruit part, then you can put lemon juice onto the apple roses. Just a little quick tip :)
You work so hard on your food. Everyone of us appreciates that.
Yes!

You can first whisk/mix the sugar and cornflour before adding the yolks and the liquids.
this helps prevent lumps:)
You can't imagine how much I love your aussie accent, really into it

Ann Reardon you've won me over i just cant stop watching
+Rachel Felshaw awesome :)
Ann, instead of adding pecans, could you add a bit of cinnamon so it gives a Christmas-y taste of apple and cinnamon?
+Maddison Nev You wouldn't replace the pecans with the cinnamon, but you could add some cinnamon for flavor.
+Bree Gruber Oh sorry, I didnt mean reaplace it all with cinnamon :p

I want to see how you cut and serve it.
shanny Allen your not suppose to cut it just look at it and be amazed
shanny Allen Exactly! How do you dig into this? Seems this for eye appeal only. Pretty but....
I like how all the ingredients are readily available and don't require complex stuff
I'd love to make this for our fam Christmas dinner, but it's probably super messy to cut and eat? Anyone have experience? :)
no because the custard will harden
Great, thank you!
Awesome, thanks! :)
+Di Life and Style I agree, but if cold, and as has been said ''with a sharp knife'', should cut perfectly and be beautiful to serve.
Beautiful looking pastry! I bet it is delicious! I'll have to try this recipe soon! Thanks!
