  • I witnessed an owl attacking (and later killing) a hawk. I caught a portion of it on camera. the hawk can be seen flying away at one point in the video. the owl stood on his perch for the better part of an hour. about 2 hours after I took the video I walked into the neighbours yard and the owl was on the grass standing on top of the hawk. it was then spooked by my dog and flew off with it.
not sure what kind of Owl this is, or hawk. but sure was exciting.

The owl is a Barred Owl and its victim is a Merlin Falcon. Merlins are extremely fast flyers with very quick reflexes I have to wonder how the owl was able to catch it initially. My guess is that the Merlin was harassing the owl which they often do and got accidentally caught by the owl when making one of its dive bombs. This must have been filmed in a North Latitude state or Canada because Merlins mostly frequent Northern zones.

Good call and absolutely spot on. I've got 30yrs experience in the avian field. And have worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. And Barred Owl's are EXTREMELY powerful and aggressive owls. Often seeing during the day as well as at night. It's at least 2 to 3x the size of the Merlin.

This is definitely BC, might be in the Okanagan near Vernon. Unfortunately the video is only 3 minutes long because if it was two minutes longer we could have expected to see (according to Rogan) a vicious Grizzly attack. Darn

Owls usually OWN Hawks regularly, it depends on the footage. Owls are Nocturnal, most other birds of prey are Diurnal

It seems that you only showed the Merlin and Barred Owl standing at separate spots. Sure, you got the info in the description, but a video would have been better to see. Its okay, owls can be pretty aggressive toward other raptors, they even steal their nests as well.

@@kjeezy2990 Yes. Better for the hawk to die a violent but quick death than to survive for a while only to die a slow miserable death by starvation. This is why I no longer pity rabbits and gazelles and such. Their food just grows out of the ground, but the predator has to work for a living. And neither one had any choice in how it was made.

Some people get insanely offended by the slightest appearance of criticism (especially the ones that are intended as humor). On the for real though the fact that he was able to record an owl at ANYTIME and especially during the daytime is damn near impossibly lucky . Then on top of this they caught the aftermath of one elusive raptor attacked by an even more elusive raptor is just nuts. Sometimes it seems like a lot of people aren't aware of how fearsome and capable that our buddies, the owl truly is. I give this video two thumbs up, shiiiit I'm gonna go ahead and award you three thumbs up!
