53-out-of-94: A circle of five minor thirds and a fourth (Hanson)

  • What it says on the tin. Kind of dreamy, labyrynthine, bendy and slightly unsettling, and sort of stable and homely at the same time. I found this little sequence this afternoon and thought I'd share it. Maybe unconsciously inspired by Daniel Richardson who asked me yesterday over Zoom whether I had any go-to chords or progressions that were strangely familiar but couldn't be done with those same old 12 notes per octave.
The progression goes \\Cm \Ebm Gbm=\F#m Am /Cm //Ebm and then it circles where ///Gb, the third of //Ebm, is enharmonically equivalent to \\G, the fifth of \\Cm. A bit of a jump on the Bosanquet keyboard, but one can see the light indigo keys at the top and bottom rows to help guide the eye to find those equivalences.
The only problem was, I intended this to be in 53-equal (where indeed Hanson temperament makes five 5:6 classic minor thirds and a 3:4 perfect fourth all add up to a couple of octaves), and just as I'd exported the audio from Pianoteq I realised this had all been in 94-equal. So good luck listening out for the one minor third in every cycle that is not like the others!

That would be nice as a sound track for a movie during an introspective scene.

Nice! Seems one could make systematic use of the gap notes to make a good well-tempered derivative of 53EDO (this already isn't too far off).
And the Lumatone seems to have all of its lights back.
