You touched on something I've been thinking about, but I don't know exactly how to word it. It feels like people equate "good skin" with being 100% within your control and consider skin issues a moral failure.
@@AbbeyYungExactly🥹! Imagine telling "You must be do something wrong. Cut X, Y, Z, do this, don' t do that, blah blah blah...?" to a person who suffers from hyperhidrosis😰🤯. They are born with disfunctional sweat glands. Some of us are born with disfunctional and/or hyperplastic (enlarged) sebaceous glands. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
You handled that negative post beautifully and with a lot of class! Everyone’s body is different and you know what is in your best interest. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s definitely working for you.
Thank you so much! I completely agree- everyone just needs to do what works the best for them and stop judging when someone else's journey is different than their own
19:40 My life was controlled by my acne. For 20 years out of my 38. From about 8 years old I was told to wash my face. Not until I was 27/28 did i start to find relief. I did the dr. visits, the medications they suggested. The diets. No sugar. No gluten, no dairy. I ate corn ships and lettuce because I was afraid to eat. I bought everything that said acne on the bottle. Nothing worked. Thank you for sharing this because I have never felt so heard. My life was controlled. My wallet, my morning, my day, my after school/work time. My evening. My social life. I didn't want my picture taken. I didn't date. I couldn't go to sleepovers as a kid. I spent my life in the bathroom. My constant obsession over laundry and clean bedding. I even did the opposite and tried essential oils like tea tree. I put myself in debt over my acne. I really did buy every single bottle that said acne. ALL OF THEM. I would wake up in the morning and the first thing i did was touch my face to find the next problem that i had to fight..... I eventually stopped everything I was doing. I changed my shower head to a filter attachment and also added tretinoin. I stopped tanning that I did to try to dry out my acne. I threw away thousands of bottles. It took months because it filled the can too much and some I had a hard time letting some of them go because I was like what if.... Eventually, one day I noticed that I had stopped touching my face in the mornings (to find the next zit, bump, bleeding thing) I knew it was some sort of combo. I still have the craters but they are slowly going away. I dont comment much but I started crying at 19:40 and replayed that a few times. So thank you for sharing you journey, face and hair. My hair is longer and healthier than it's ever been.
I was looking for a comment like this. I had extreme acne up until recently and also inflamed dry bumpy skin, and the change? I installed soft water into my house. All of a sudden, all the inflammation and breakouts were gone. I don’t think people realize how much water quality affects your skin barrier. This was a life changing event for me, and all of a sudden my scalp started to sprout hair, the bumps and scales on my skin disappeared, and my skin wasn’t red anymore. I am also installing a shower filter to target chlorine and chloramines now because those are also irritating. Which one do you have?
Unlike other infections, the ones caused by acne won' t kill you by sepsis because it is "just" a skin disfunction. But, hellll, it' s a *bloody psychological nightmare* . It' s such a severe brain and self esteem killer💀😢. Even after years and years healed (and scars 100% removed) my PTSD is still real. Best wishes🧛🏻♀️🖤
As a non-American living in the US, I'm shocked this isn't spoken of even more. I have a huge water softener and hand nozzle attached to my shower, and I get it replaced. Also, I quit Orilissa for endometriosis, which got rid of my melasma. I use tret once or twice a week, red light therapy, and I cut out azelaic acid. And Abbey, I don't know if you'll see this, but these videos always raise so many questions for me. Like, even though you don't like your hair down, you're obsessed with it being perfect down. Why?
Why are people so anti science these days? It’s so frustrating!!! Thanks for sharing your skin care journey with us staying genuine to your experience!
Hey Abbey, I am 77 and have had hormonal acne on and off my entire life!!! I use Tretinoin now. How can a 77 year old still have periodic breakouts? Well, I do. I understand genetic acne. I am grateful for Tret. Your honesty is commendable and helpful to so many. You are an exceptional human being Abbey, and I am here to encourage you on your journey in life. God bless you!!!❤
omg! I've been on Tazorac for about 11 years! I'm 59 and my skin is like glass. I started it in my 40's. I had the worst hormonal acne and sun spots. I literally look better now than I did at 45! I have been consistent with using it 4 times a week and have stayed on the .05 strength. I really think you will love it! I mentioned it years ago on your site but I realize it's not as well known as Tretinoin. I'm a flight attendant and get compliments on my skin all the time. I let EVERYONE know that Taz is the reason!!
The internet is so weird sometimes! It’s bizarre that people get so worked up over someone ELSE’S skincare routine…just strange! Thanks for sharing, Abbey! Your skin looks great, and as someone who also struggled with acne their whole life, I’m so glad you found what works for you! ❤
I fully agree and support you on this decision because I myself am on Tazarotene right now. I've transitioned from Tretinoin to it 6 months ago, and it's been a game changer. I use the one from Glenmark, 0.1% Taz cream. Acne doesn't stand a chance anymore. Every new pimple that I get (which is rare now) only lasts half a day. A warning for everyone who wants to get on it: my entire face and neck peeled off like a snake when I made the foolish mistake of using it every single night from the jump, thinking me being on Tretinoin 0.1% for so long somehow had built a solid, sufficient tolerance... NO. While the irritation was much lower compared to Tret, the peeling was much more intense. I now use it every night but had to start all over again with just 3x a week.
Same! Tazarotene works better for my acne than tret+clindamycin did. My skin cleared up within a week, it's crazy. I use 0,05% every other day. My skin is super dry with hormonal acne but it tolerates taz well
@@AbbeyYung I did as i did with Tretinoin. I probably would have avoided the extreme peeling if I’d started with 0.5%, but I’m glad I pushed through it, so I don’t have to worry about having to upgrade my % in the future if needed.
It's so refreshing to see such an open and honest post regarding acne. There are so many who struggle with it. And there is such widespread misunderstanding of acne and its causes. So often I see comments like, "You just need to wash your face more." Or, "You eat too much sugar." And it's ALWAYS from someone who has never struggled with acne, so has no clue what they're talking about. Thank you for sharing your journey.
I love the sugar thing... When I don't consume sugar and stress about sugar I break out terribly but when I don't care and don't stress about sugar and just eat it I don't break out🤣🤣.
Us acne girlies are SO grateful for your transparency with your journey. You’re the big sis we all look up to. P.s would love an updated (AM & PM) skincare routine ❤
In my experience tazerotene is generally covered by insurance but it's still expensive. Tret seems to be the more cost effective option. Dr.Dray has a video comparing the two if you want more information.
I find your channel so informative and cheerful. I hate to say this but I thought I would give you a look into the future. You’re 30 and I’m in my 60’s, and acne comes in full force! Women have a struggle with this and often it’s hormone driven as you know. I had a dermatologist tell me at age 20 that women’s bodies experience somewhat of a new renewal every 7 years. Surprisingly, I have found this to be true. I also know other women who experience this too. You’re a smart person. Just keep a record of this because it could happen again. If you know how you treated it previously it could be helpful.
Ty for this video, Abbey. The shift you’re talking about now happened for me in my late thirties and your advice has gotten my skin and hair back to a place I’m proud of! One of the things that drew me to your channel was your appreciation of science and your no nonesense calling out of bad methodology. In a world where most of the people who tell you to “do your own research” not only scoff at expertise but have never learned research methods or basic logical rules, you are a breath of fresh air. That comment you read was pompous and gross and I’m sorry you had to hear it, but I’m grateful people like yourself stand as a strong example against that crowd
You said this so perfectly... and I want to echo and celebrate the part about Abby being strong in the face of the righteous BS. It's those that don't struggle, or are lucky enough to find a quick, simple, or easy solution, that have the privilege of being so righteous, judgmental, and cruel.
Thank you for sharing this update! I am an, almost 53 year old women and I started on Tret about 18 months ago and wish I had started sooner! Now being in menopause, my skin changed so much and adding Tret to my already consistent skin care regimen was such a game changer. I have reduced even the minimal wrinkling I had and my skin has a glow I haven't had since, well, I don't know when. Glad to know there is something stronger out there if this ever stops working! 🎉
🎉Well said, Abbey!!!! Mic drop. Thank you for standing your ground and thank you for sticking up for yourself!! And thank you for all the work you do to save me money and for makeup Recs! 🎉
@@AbbeyYung, are you still keeping the salicylic acid serum and copper peptide serum? Do you use these in conjunction with the tazarotene? I'm asking because I'm wondering if you should stop all exfoliating ingredients when you get on Taz and just stick with Taz since that is known to do it all. Saw your video with a chemist explaining copper peptides with a retinoid are fine but all derms including Doctorly say not to use it combined with retinoid and Vit c Do you also use azelaic acid when you use Taz? or u alternate?
@@AbbeyYungYeah. It’s because it’s actually the dust mites we’re allergic to - or their feces. People with dust allergy most likely have at least some reaction to shellfish as well. :)
@@AbbeyYungTina Tanaka Harris is allergic to dust and she also confirmed it’s the reason she can’t use snail mucin. As you know our skin changes and then all of a sudden a preferred product isn’t tolerated anymore. I used to sandwich my tret between snail mucin and moisturizer. I can’t do it anymore so I use in the morning. Works for me.
Tazarotene is definitely more potent. BUT tbh probably what is breaking you out is instable compounding. I tried three different derm compounding companies and each time I would get random break outs. Their stability, esspecially with so many actives varies from batch to batch and is very inconsistent; the vehicle is the culprit of your breakouts. I would recommend going to the regular derm and just separating those three actives, and building an am/pm layering routine to make sure that all the actives work at the level they should.
Interesting. I have tried different brands of the same drug, where one definitely didn't work like the other. I use an estrogen patch for HRT, where Climara works great, but Mylan with the same active ingredient does NOT work at all, AND causes horrible skin irritation.
this is fascinating and important to keep in mind when using a compounded medication... and even an RX from mainstream pharmacies between different manufacturers of generic meds.
I was using doctor prescribed tretinoin for 1 year everything was great but then I switched to online compounded tretinoin and my skin was flaking a lot and had irritation. I was reading research that prescribed tretinoin is manufactured the way it is for a reason, its stability and package. So I went back to doctor prescribed tretinoin and my skin went back to perfect. So if you are having irritation or online tretinoin doesn’t work, please go back to doctor prescribed tretinoin. I think online compounded tretinoin mix is just not stable enough and over rated
yeah, it makes a lot of sense that formulation can be a big influence... sometime ago i tried using a retinol on my neck, and it gave me an intense reaction... i thought my neck was just too sensitive to tolerate retinol... but quite some time after that i decided to try a retinal, which is an even stronger active, from the same brand as the retinol id tried, and its never sensitized my skin... just because the formulation was different, the problem was instantly solved...
I stopped it, too. I used it for years, but then all of a sudden it was drying out my skin. Cutting back didn't work. Good thing new and "improved" products are always coming out. Good luck, Abby!
Abbey thank you so much for talking about this and how it’s so damaging when others suggest we need to change our diet, lifestyle, etc. I literally was nodding along and verbally said “Thank you” when you were talking about this
THIS!! When I started dating my boyfriend he used beard oil that had fragrance and it gave me a reaction (I have eczema and acne prone skin). Anyways now he uses a sensitive skin friendly one for me🩷
Hey Abbey, just wanted to share this. Ive started tret almost 2 years ago, because ive had those clogged pores. A lot. Before tret those little bumps would stay on my face YEARS , in the same places, and i would just get more of them as time went by. After i started tret every single one of those bumps became a painful zit/ cyst over the period of ~6 months, leaving scars.😅 But now they are gone and i almost dont get new ones (i have maybe 2-3 on my face now , and it used to be almost a hundred (yes, i counted them once😂)) . I still don't know where they are coming from and why, but tretinoin is the only thing that helped me, it has completely changed my skin ❤
i LOVE my arazlo after years of retin a micro. like you, i have had acne (and hence have been on some sort of retinol) since i was 16. i was so nervous about purging because of my experience with tret, and i'm so so happy with the switch. also LOL at all the naturopaths in the comments. i've done the gallon of water a day, exercise, no sugar, no yeast, no gluten, no animal products, no this, no that, no no no and guess what? still broke out! people can be so insensitive when it comes to acne. they have no effing CLUE how hard it is to manage the condition.
I absolutely loved your message about not restricting yourself to a slice of pizza, etc… As a mother of 2 adult daughters I have witnessed them and so many others experience this with their acne. It’s soooo annoying when people say it’s coming from their diet. Because of the constant chatter, one of my daughters now has an eating disorder? She started to get monthly chemical peels and the antibiotic and her skin is flawless now. She does not use tret either. Come to find out that it wasn’t her diet. Too many weirdos out there with their “diet” advice. I get so sick of it.
Thank you for addressing the guilt that is thrown on people with acne suggesting that we’re doing something wrong or our bodies are malfunctioning. It’s very anxiety inducing to be trying to get to the bottom of what is “wrong” inside because there is no easy way to figure what it could even be. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for sharing your story and your history/experience with mitigating your acne and reaping the benefits that retinoids can provide. You were definitely one of the influencers that inspired me into starting Tretinoin almost 2 years ago to address my breakouts and for the "anti-aging" benefits. After the initial skin purging and skin peeling stage that lasted about two months, I finally saw smoother and acne-free skin. I have continued to use it and found that my skin stays clear and stable, even when using it just once or twice a week vs nightly. I am glad to hear you have found that switching to Tazarotene has helped your skin! The fact that it works more selectively on retinoic acid receptors compared to Tretinoin can be really helpful if Tretinoin is just not cutting it anymore like it used to. It's nice to know this information and that there are different options. I'm pleased people like you talk about this openly in hopes of helping others who may be currently struggling.
When you said in a previous video, you were stopping tretinoin, I was like wow no retinoid at all. I thought you were going to go off prescription and going use over the counter retinol. Been on both tret and tazorotene. Tazorotene controlled my acne better but it was interesting to me you made “big deal” about switching because they’re basically the same. Epiduo controlled my acne the best out of everything. Good luck!
You go girl! I appreciate you calling out that specific unkind comment. Tazarotene is amazing. You can look into the gentler lotion-Arazlo. And ultimately, oral spironolactone is amazing.
I was on oral spironolactone and it improved my acne a lot but after a year and a half my derm made me go off it because he said it alters your hormones and is not safe to be on indefinitely. When I weaned myself off not only did my acne come back but I started losing hair! So be careful with things that alter your hormones
@@AbbeyYungit’s wonderful. I’ve had acne basically my whole adult life. Spironolactone has nearly cleared my skin in just 2 months. Definitely an effective option!
I was on oral spironolactone for years. But you do have to get blood work done periodically because it can impact your potassium levels. I loved it but I have low blood pressure and over time I was getting increasingly dizzy and lightheaded from it dropping my blood pressure too low. Ultimately I had to wean myself off.
so happy taz is working for you! Been hearing such good reviews about it as well. There’s also winlevi which is a prescription topical sprinolactone cream, just in case taz stops working and you need something to try ☺️
I’m 27 and have struggled with breakouts since i was 13 and was so frustrated. 8 months ago i started accutane and it was the best thing ever, i was a little dried out and my joints were a little achey during my workouts but i would 100% do it all over again, my skin is the clearest it’s ever been and i am now using 0.025 tretinoin, have never been complimented more on my skin. 100% an accutane lover.
@@WallxFlower so glad to hear that! I absolutely needed to use the Cortibalm by Dr Dan to help with chapped lips and Bioassance has a thick moisturizer the squalane + ectoin overnight rescue and it absolutely made the accutane process way easier.
Personally i think its the azelaic acid you added that's clearing your skin. It always takes care of pimples super fast for me, pretty much overnight, and keeps them at bay. 🖤
@@silviarahim90 i live in Australia and we have Azclear available at the chemist here. It's 20% azalaic acid, you just have to ask for it from behind the counter. No prescription. 💖
It's crazy that so many of us experience the 21-22 hormonal acne. I started getting the same type of acne at exactly 22. I'm 23 now and still don't know how to deal with it but your video really helps!
Same. It kicked off when I was 21 worse than my teens. I’m 33 now and my skin is a lot easier to manage now even though it’s different due to having had one baby and currently pregnant with another, etc. Things change over time and you learn what works. Sometimes it takes a long time and sometimes something works for a while and then things change again! Don’t give up! Also, don’t let it get you down and ruin your life! It’s not worth it. You’re beautiful. I hope your journey is full of success with the mental and emotional battle of acne as well as the physical. ❤️
20:06 the diet-acne obsession triggered my ED when I was a teenager, and even though my acne is under control now after accutane in high school and being on oral spiro since college (I’m the same age as you) my ED is still something I struggle with on an ongoing basis. I take this rhetoric so personally. Screw the orthorexia police!!! Live your life, the stress of obsessing over what you eat will make everything worse. Like you said, the “root cause” is oftentimes… ye olde genetics
I felt so annoyed by those tiktok/ig comments as well, and I haven't even had an ED. Sure, what you eat reflects your overall health, but personally I feel that more you stress about your eating habits, that also reflects negatively on your health. It limits and constricts your life so much it soon becomes everything you think about. You might even turn down things that otherwise would've turned into amazing life experiences you get to reminisce in your elderly years. And yes, none of us will look like we did in our 20's and 30's once we hit that rocking chair, no matter how we eat or what we splatter on and/or in our faces.
Think all of the things you mentioned are so important. And you spoke to a lot of my pet peeve that related to skin care these days. 1. Your acne can change over time, especially when you are changing hormonally from your 20s to 30s. 2. Dermatologists are the experts, but also (just like Abby said), go to your regular doctor too and make sure there isn't a contributing factor. They are going to assume you've had regular yearly health screenings. 3. Medications work differently on different people and will probably not always be even effective for you long term. Just because tret replaced adapalene or SA replaced benzoyl peroxide from a consumer standpoint, it does not mean these medications don't work. You have to find what works for you. 4. Allowing your medical provider to start somewhere and then escalate treatment. Again, they are the expert, they've seen the side effects of starting some of these medications...if they see that 30% of their patients purge and prematurely stop treatment on a medication. They may not be inclined to offer it to you. Later on, you end up starting it, and it's the best thing that's happened for your skin....they weren't withholding. They were thinking about your treatment plan. I.e. where you are now and how to achieve your goal with as little setbacks as possible. How your skin responds is not in their control and they are relying on past experiences with prescribing that medication.
Abbey did you ever try Accutane? It’s the only thing that cleared my VERY BAD hormonal cystic acne (that I never had ever until I turned 26) all over my jaw, chin and under my jaw. It took three months of the lowest dosage and it was gone forever! It took me a year to get the courage to take it (and I tried EVERYTHING in between). When I took it and it was all gone in three months I couldn’t believe I didn’t take it earlier!! Oh, and because I took the lowest dosage, I had zero side effects. But you cannot drink at all because it’s metabolized in your liver.
You’re kidding?! Everyone I personally know that went on it had to be on it for a full year so that’s why at this stage in life I’m like maybe I shouldn’t… but I am not opposed if this gets worse 😂
@@AbbeyYung I took Accutane in high school and it is life changing. But I would strongly recommend anyone considering it to speak to qualified board certified physicians about all potential side effects before starting it. It is a serious medication unlike what many of us have used in our every day lives. Please research and only go forward if you are prepared to handle all potential complications.
@AbbeyYung I took Accutane for 4 months, it worked wonders… but I got TE after (rare side effect) and lost 60% of my hair - it all grew back but it was VERY traumatic. Acne is still gone.
I’ve been on Accutane twice. I moved abroad during round 1 so I could only do 3 months, which is probably why I relapsed a few years later. Did a full course the second time (it’s 6 months long) and no skin issues now for 15+ years.
I’ve never taken more than an OTC retinoid, but I have a really similar skin situation in that my acne worsened between ages 26-now (age 34). I’m also someone who has experienced disordered eating throughout my life, but dealt with a full blown ED the worse my skin got. I’ve done so much work on mindset and finding ways to eat healthy without becoming obsessive, but I still have acne! It’s embarrassing and until this video, I didn’t realize how much shame I’ve internalized from years of accumulating advice about lifestyle and “healing the insides.” So thank you for your honesty, because it made me want to cry to realize that maybe it’s not my fault!
Love that you mentioned that acne is not necessarily from diet or from your skin care routine. I struggle with hormonal acne and also use Tretinoin to keep it under control. I have never had a dermatologist suggest changing my diet in order to prevent acne and there really is only very limited research that supports a link between certain foods (like high glycemic foods or dairy products) and acne. Even if diet does have an impact on acne, it is likely not the only contributing factor. Whenever I see people on the internet claiming that you can "cure" all kinds of medical conditions simply by changing your diet I can't help but roll my eyes. Unfortunately I see a lot of this sentiment these days and I think it's a result of increasing mistrust and suspicion of doctors and Big Pharma as well as the "appeal to nature fallacy" that makes people believe that so called "natural" treatments are better or safer. Thanks for sharing your experience and using your platform to call out absurd medical misinformation, it really is very much appreciated!
diet and hormones were what caused my acne. it's still good advice and a first line of defense when it's free to try an elimination diet. hormone stuff is harder
I was using retinal then switched to tretinoin, I'm 55 years old with dry skin. My skin never acclimated to tretinoin, I had a lot of peeling and irritation, so I went back to retinal. My favorite is G&G A-Game 10. I'm planning to try the A-Game 20, but waiting till spring and the weather isn't so harsh and dry. I hope you found a great ingredient/product for you! Many blessings!!!💖💖💖
Thanks for showing my something new, Abbey! I've never heard of Taz... And luckily I have a derm appointment next week, so I can bring it up to see if making that switch from tret to taz is right for me to try. Also, I'll never understand how people have so much free time on their hands to go out of their to criticize others so much. ❤
Azelaic acid is SO amazing!! Definitely underrated. I use the Paula’s Choice one and it did wonders. Together with cutting out dairy, eggs and soy😭 basically all foods that influence my hormones. But acne is sooo personal
These negative comments about your acne being “due to your inside” is the same I get about my depression… extra blaming on the person just makes it all worse.
I was a cosmetologist/ esthetician for over 20 years and worked in a plastic surgeon / dermatology office for 5 of those years. Three of the things I learned from the doctors are #1THERE IS NO CURE FOR ACNE. There is medicine/ prescriptions to help control acne. #2 Tretinoin is not for everyone. Some people find help with over the counter products such as some of the acne washes. Some get help from Differin. Some don’t. Some need a prescription for stronger medication. There is no one cure for all. And Dermatologist is the only one who can help navigate it. I’m glad you addressed the viewers comment that said it was a gut issue… it is not. #3 all acne is hormonal… ALL acne is hormonal. Not all people get acne from hormones. But when you do it SUCKS! I hope you get relief from your new medicine. ❤❤ I don’t suffer from hormonal acne but i do suffer from hormonal melasma. I used look like I had dirt on my lower jaw line. I developed it when I was 38 after I had my son. I have fought it for 18 years and just now found a good treatment after I went to a dermatologist.
I stopped using tretinoin a week ago and your video and journey really resonated with me. I started getting really bad chin/around my mouth acne in my late 20's. I finally saw a dermatologist a week ago and she started me on cabtreo (which has adapalene, clindamycin, and benzoyl peroxide in it) and winlevi (topical to target hormonal acne) and for the first time I have no active breakouts or breakouts on the way
I’ve been using retin-a/tretinoin off and on since I was 15. In perimenopause, my skin is so dry, I’m finding it difficult to tolerate in winter. Trying retinal to help get through the season. In my younger days, birth control was the only thing that really helped my acne.
Abbey, thank you for this information! I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability! I think you addressed those negative comments properly. 💕. Take Care!
Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I relate very much. I'm one of the people you referenced who was lucky to not struggle with acne for most of my life until my late 20s (now in my early 30s). 💕
Thanks for sharing your skin story, it’s helpful and takes a lot of courage! Everyone without qualifications sharing their opinions on what your skin is doing is out of line - YOU know your body best and I love to hear your approach to health and life in your 30s. Highly recommend the book Reclaiming Body Trust to carry you forward with that path. (I’m a therapist and I work in this area a lot!)
I asked my derm for tret after hearing you rave about it for years and he gave me tazarotene instead, so I’m thrilled that we will be on this journey together! I’ve been using it for about 2.5 months so far, starting over moisturizer and now on bare skin every other day. So far the purging has been pretty bad but I can tell the pimples are healing faster than they used to. Peeling/dryness/irritation has been minimal, mostly just on top of the healing pimples. I’m feeling cautiously optimistic!
I’ve been Tazerotene for 4+ years, and it’s actually what I started my retinol journey with. I asked about tret at my in office derm and they said the same thing. The newer generations of skincare are where it’s at, not unlike Asian skincare compared to our western approach. I’ve also suffered from hormonal acne and I haven’t had an issue or any purging in years. Also worth noting I ingest Spironalactone pills everyday, so that likely is a contributing factor. Best of luck with your skin journey!! You’ve got this!
Thank you for making this video Abbey. I have had such a similar journey and I can completely relate to all of the stages and the emotions that come with them! I especially want to say thank you for talking about the misguided thinking that so many people have that changing your diet and lifestyle will completely transform your experience with acne. As someone who also has tried this solution many times, on a very committed level, it does not work like that for individuals like us. That really resonates with me and I think you’re amazing for how you speak your mind and show so much vulnerability. Thank you 💖
I am so glad you found something that works. I cannot imagine how stressful it would be to constantly see a breakout forming… once you think you’re through. My 2 cents (because every body is different): i had acne growing up and would continue to get a breakout like once a month in my 20s. By luck of life, my husband went to an endocrinologist for a hormonal issue and was recommended DIM (it’s derived from broccoli). He took it and he never broke out. So I started taking it - my skin improved materially. My sebaceous filaments would always be clogged, no matter how religiously I used cleansers. Now, you can barely tell I have pores. It is a miracle little thing. What DIM apparently does is that is removes excess estrogens from your body. And if I don’t take it, a week later I will have a white head. Something to consider - though I would stay with this new prescription (because any retinoid type is great from anti aging… I use retinols because it keeps my skin so pretty). Best of luck!!! And never let someone tell you what you’re doing to your body is wrong, that is so rude
❤❤ Way to represent for the community!! From this 61 year old, you are doing an amazing job. I enjoy you and your content and am really impressed with how you handle the trolls. Keep the faith.
I was one of those comments on Tazarotene. 😁 I think it works AMAZING but the purge is strong. My rx strength is .1% though. Another downfall is the price. It’s super expensive unless you use good rx coupon or bomb insurance. (At least for me) and I hate the you can’t wax on retinoids. Other than those things, it def works well. I think you’ll love it Abbey!😊 Good luck.
I honestly had never heard of Tazaratine before watching this. I'm 54 yo with oily but mature skin, and I too always struggled with horrible acne. I started tretinoin just two years ago and have been blown away by how much my skin has improved, but even while being post menopausal, I still get occasional hormonal acne breakouts. Thank you for all of the info, as it sort of prepares me for what may be possible.
That' s EXACTLY my case and I didn' t understand what tf and why tffff!!!🤷🏻♀️ The epiphany came when an old, experienced, wise, lovely pharmacist read my prescription and spat: "Aha, my dear, I see, I see, switching to retinaldehyde. Lovely antibacterial retinoid! And tell me, how many years has your skin handled tret until THE COLLAPSE?" I was like😳 Wha wha what collapse??... _"In the vast majority of cases of adult hormonal acne with inflammatory lesions, _*_the cell turnover stimulated by tret is just too much for your glands. They work forced above their possibilities resulting in break outs. More cell turnover is not necessary better for your profile, EVERYBODY KNOWS IT, it' s common sense!"_* No, not everybody knows it. Actually, nobody never mentioned it before🥺. I' m still digesting this info and the mix of emotions it caused on me after 13 years in tret. I' m 53 yo. So glad for you, Abbey, and thank you for spreading it. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
As someone who suffered from acne all through high school and even now at 32, thank you for saying what you did. You just made a lot of people feel heard
I know kelly driscoll talks a lot about how breakouts can happen more frequently when your barrier is damaged (because theres nothing protectingg from bacteria etc from gettin in) , so I'm a little surprised your derm prescribed an active like that. I'm sure they know more than all of us...but wondering if you've tried stopping all actives and just cutting down to a very basic barrier healing g routine for a bit. I suffered from what sounds like the exact thing as you the past 3 months. (Yes, it took that long for them all to come to the surface and go away) I still have 3 left that are almost healed. Still not sure what triggered it. Backstory: I had severe acne in my teens but in my 20's-34 my skin basically never broke out and was immaculately clear (with just a few small blackheads) Then this past year I got super into skincare. Since then I've had more acne than in the past 15 years combined (no exaggeration) also still not sure what caused it. But I suffered from what sounds like the exact thing as you...all of a sudden (about 4 months into my skincate journey, and after trying a few new products) a ton of tiny painless bumps appeared on my skin (mainly on one side of my neck, and a few on my jaw/cheeks) which verrrrry slowly made their way to the surface. Some took over a month to grow and once they did, a majority turned into painful cysts, and like you a few were smaller pimples. The one active I left in my routine in the beginning was a salicylic acid wash. Other than that I used barrier care ingredients that I know I trust as well as peptide serums. I've since re-incorporated my retinaldehyde serum and my exfoliant once a week and so far so good (no new breakouts) one of my theories as to what could have caused it is a hair wax stick I used in my braid. I literally got a LINE of zits on that one side of my neck where my braid would lay against my skin...and it's on the side where I lean on in bed at night. (I also stopped using that hair wax stick) other theory is the laroche posay cicaplast or the inn beauty elastic skin. I still haven't touched those products again because I wanted my skin to clear up first so I know for sure. As much as I love skincare and how it has helped my fine lines and given me super smooth skin, I get so skeptical and worried when there are in fact so so many products out there that can do more harm than good and so many things wrong can react to that it almsot doesn't seem worth it. But ice come this far hahah just need to fund what works for me I suppose. Anyway..just my 2 cents...please definitely keep us updated on your journey. I feel for you! Having intense breakouts like that is NOT fun ,(especially when like you said you have to go on camera for your livelihood!) Just know I myself love you even more for sharing this with us! ❤
I switched from tret to tazarotine about 7 months ago, and my skin is looking better than ever. I didn't think it could get better than tret, but quickly found out i was wrong. I think you made the right choice, girlfriend! Enjoy the results!❤😊
Diffent things work for different people when it comes to acne. That is why acne is so hard to treat, and it can be genetic. Products/prescriptions can even stop being effective. The skin is so much more complicated than anyone thinks. Good luck on your journey! Excited to follow your results/thoughts.
I finally went on accutane in my late 20s, and it helped a ton and my skin isn't as oily anymore. I still have acne though, I almost always have a small breakout. It is what it is. I don't want to stress over acne treatment unless I'm uncomfortable. We are normal, acne isn't our fault 😊
I quit after only using it for 6 months. I was using the sandwich method, I'm a busy college student and didn't want to wait around 30 min for everything to soak in before I could go to bed. I was using it for my blackhead problem and I know you are supposed to be patient and after 6 months I just wasn't seeing enough results to keep going. After I stopped I started using Panoxyl 5% and it transformed my skin in half the time. So no regrets on my end.
@Rebecca_Dolan My dermatologist recommended that I wait 10 min between each layer. 10 for the first layer of moisturizer. 10 for the tret and another 10 for the final layer of moisturizer. I go to the gym at night and take a shower when I get home. And after getting out I'm exhausted and just want to go right to sleep.
Low percentage benzoyl peroxide is great for blackheads and closed comedones. I use a low percentage benzoyl peroxide mask/cleanser combo (neutrogena, great product but it has a bit of a minty additive) and that’s helped get rid of blackheads, sebaceous filaments much more effectively than salicylic acid ever did.
If the tazarotene doesn’t work out, you may want to consider asking your derm about oral spironolactone. I’ve been on oral spiro for 3+ years now and I sincerely mean it when I say it changed my life. Just an anecdotal suggestion though😊 Good luck!
I started experiencing acne in the last few years(I'm 42), and as someone who never really dealt with acne other than the occasional zit during that time of the month, I was lost. I have been on tret through Agency for a couple of years now, and it has really helped!! I still get the occasional zit, but nothing like before. I did my research and watched my terms on UA-cam and learned how hormones fluctuate as we start hitting perimenopause age. I don't think I'll need tret for the rest of my life, but for now, it's a HUGE help.
I’m dealing with terrible closed comedomes for the first time in my life at 21 and I feel so insecure and wrong for having bad skin right now and this video made me feel better on a day that I had earlier picked my skin and don’t feel the best so thank you so much for this.
Phenomenal video. I’m with you all the way and dealing with similar issues at each milestone of life being an acne prone female since the teen years. Ignore the haters. There are a lot of us supportive followers who just don’t comment often. Putting down others via comments is very immature imo
I appreciate your openness and candor. I just made the switch a couple months ango after using tret for over 15 years due to random breakouts around my chin So far so good. I also added a sulfur wash which also helps clears out the clogged pores!!
Abbey! Your amazing. Thank you for being vulnerable to get the word out for those suffering. I didn’t have much acne in my life but my baby brother did and it was so so hard on him. Girl, I know you have to read the comments but just throw those non educated, asinine trolls in the “nope” bin. Those of us who love you know you research, research research. We also know you to be an intelligent young lady who considers many angles/possibles/options. Thank you!
Very recently, I realized that my IUD was causing my hormonal acne, and just started tretinoin and oral spironolactone until early 2025 when I can get my IUD removed. I just want to focus on balancing my hormones and then wean off both scripts and stay off BC. My plan is: quality vitamins including those Bs (especially from organs), omegas, magnesium, water (I never drink enough ugh lol), weight training and protein. My sleep is great already but that’s a big one that helps a lot! Adult acne is so tough, and it is really discouraging sometimes seeing so many YT’ers with seemingly perfect skin. I have to remember that they’ll have their bad days too, and we don’t walk around with perfect lighting all the time (and some people use filters). Thank you for sharing your journey and good luck! We’re beautiful with our flaws and all! ❤😊
I love the honesty and think you are handling this whole experience wonderfully ❤! You will always be beautiful in my eyes and dont let the haters get you down!
I also had trouble with acne in my early 40's. My dermatologist doesn't believe your diet plays much of a rule in your skin. Yes we should all have a healthy diet but that's not the issue in most acne problems. I recently seen a few other dermatologist on UA-cam that said the same thing. So I'm going to stick with actual medical recommendations from qualified people not just some person with no medical background. Thank you for this video.
Hello Abby! I’m a 55 year old woman and have several problems on my hair I been learning many tips from you! Thank you so much! Now my hair is growing more thanks to you!!, like to ask you something, have you heard of Modern Color? It is 3-in-1 color refresh, cleanse and conditioner, I love it! My hair is more soft, shiny, bouncy and I love the idea of refreshing the color of my hair and repairing it at the same time, this product use what they call Nourish Color Bond Technology, I like to see if you can give us your opinion on this product, you don’t have to use it, just to give your opinion if it is possible 😊
Your videos have totally changed my hair and skin and it’s allowed me to spend much less time preoccupied about them. I too have hereditary cystic acne - my Dad had it bad and I have had it bad half my life. I’ve been using Roaccutane for nearly 4 years now; I use only 50mg a week - 10mg a day on weekdays. This is the fourth time I’ve been on Roaccutane in 18 years and finally this slow and steady method WORKED (using 50mg a week instead of 40-60mg a day!). But it’s finally time for me to come of Roaccutane, and although my acne is far better than it has ever been, it’s now coming back a little bit as I wean off the Roaccutane. I’ve been using adapalene but it’s not strong enough, it seems. I’m going back to my dermatologist and I’ll get her advice - but your advice helps a lot too! Thanks Abbey and good luck with your acne!
I really hate the “you’re not healthy” blame for acne. I am most likely more healthy than most the people claiming that and I still get acne. Every person that has told me that has never had extreme acne before. I started using tret because of you and it helped clear my skin so thank you ❤ I hope this new skincare product works for you because acne is honestly heartbreaking to have.
Thank you for sharing. .you are so honest. I totally went thru what happened to you when I was at your age , I still breakout now and them. But now I am older , people like us needed to look for solution for our acne problems when we were young , I actually feel it is a blissing in disguise. For those others that grew up with better skin, , now I am older , since they did not need to take care of their skin, they actually look or aged worse than me. Yes , it is very tough journey for a girl has acne. I must say you did your make up very well, at least you know how to cover up the spots,. I would very much like to learn the skill. ..Again , thank you for your story.
Unfortunately resolving acne is a trial and error situation, its different for every person. Sounds like you tried everything and this has been the best option for you. Ive had steuggles with acne my whole life since i was about 12 years old and I discovered about 3 years ago I am actually dairy intolerant, and so I quit dairy and my skin got better. Before I started developing dairy intolerance though I used raw coconut oil and did oil pulling on my face. It worked a dream. It worked so well that I got my husband to use it and it cleared his acne up too that he had also struggled with for years. He felt really embarrassed about his skin and the coconut oil got rid of it. Same purging phase but to this day our house is stocked up on coconut oil 😂 Its what worked for us. It's a hard journey, but whatever works you're best sticking with!
Thank you for this video! You’re sooo right! Also, you wouldn’t have such AMAZING hair if your insides were broken/problem. People who don’t have acne don’t understand. You’re amazing!
Wowow thank you for opening up about the comments regarding acne being an internal problem. I got emotional when you said that you don’t want to feel guilty for eating a slice of pizza or piece of cake because I’ve been there. Life is about balance❤️❤️
Love all of your informative videos! I didnt have acne until my 30's and ohhh dear gawd it brought me to tears. Tret was my go to ! But im so happy to hear about Taz, just in case!
Dr. Idriss recommends not using Tretinoin around the mouth, because it's more likely to cause irritation. I'm in the process of starting Tazorotine. I wash my face, moisturize and then wait an hour and use the Tazorotine. So far so good. It's been about a month. I'm not using it for acne however - using it for anti-agiing. Snail mucin irritates my skin.
Thank you for addressing how it controlled your lifestyle. It is such a burden at a point that those without it will never understand. ❤ that was the realist vibe. Thank you for doing this unsponsored, unapologetically, and vulnerable.
I had hormonal acne my whole 20s but it ramped up like CRAZY out of nowhere when I turned 27 and became super cystic and awful. I’m almost 32 and am two-months post Accutane and it feels so good to not have acne controlling my daily life. Actually about to go back on tretinoin just for aging purposes but now I’m interested in learning more about Tazarotene!
Talk to your derm. Tazarotene is very strong and drying. My daughter also did Accutane and is super happy with the results. Her skin is so flawless now. Her derm prescribed .25 tretinoin and she can only use it 2x week after months just because your skin changes so much from Accutane and remains dry for a long time. But the tretinoin is helping with any remaining scarring. 😊
Thank you, Abbey, for fully going through all of this. I appreciate your detailed explanation. Truly. Although I love tretinoin and it works for me, I can understand why it is not the best plan of attack for you at this time. This video was an eye-opener for me.
I 100% agree with your comments, I had the same issue when I was in my 30s and tried all kinds of skin care and diet changes. It can definitely take over your life! I would actually think to myself that I wish I could alert all the people younger than me. And the comments about my own lifestyle were definitely infuriating! Spironolactone was the ONLY thing that worked for me and I just recently stopped taking it for other medical reasons and I’m in my 40s now. So I still think it’s effective and would recommend Spiro, up until it might start causing other problems…but if it doesn’t I say take it as long as you can! I’m glad you’re able to warn younger people so it’s not so much of a surprise. Really appreciate this video 😊
Thank you for talking about this! I will be 28 in a few weeks and I’ve had acne my entire 20s, I finally went to a derm and got prescribed spironolactone and tret. Im so excited to see some results and stop letting everything control every thought I have.
You touched on something I've been thinking about, but I don't know exactly how to word it. It feels like people equate "good skin" with being 100% within your control and consider skin issues a moral failure.
This!! Exactly how comments like the one I showed were making me feel

You handled that negative post beautifully and with a lot of class! Everyone’s body is different and you know what is in your best interest. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s definitely working for you.
Thank you so much! I completely agree- everyone just needs to do what works the best for them and stop judging when someone else's journey is different than their own
Yes.
🥹💗 I am so sorry you went through all of this but SO happy that you are in a better place now!
Couldn’t agree more 👏👏
because of the lies about covid I guess
Can you tell me, is that a prescription or a skin care cream? I would like to try it! Glass skin is what I’m after! Thank you in advance!😊
WOW that is amazing!!
@@gwen08g it's prescription from my derm. When I started it, there wasn't a generic version. (pricey) but there is now
Where do you get it from??🙏🏼

LOVE hearing this!! Curious- did you go straight to .1% Taz?
Indeed
Transparency? How many videos do you see her with acne?

In my experience tazerotene is generally covered by insurance but it's still expensive. Tret seems to be the more cost effective option. Dr.Dray has a video comparing the two if you want more information.
Great to know! Love Dr Dray
This makes complete sense!! It has definitely come and gone in waves for me and the 7 year renewal seems spot on. Thank you so much ❤️
I love this comment ❤
Finally you’ve caught up to my 30+ dermatitis concerns vs acne! I look forward to your research!
I’m so sorry you went through that. Acne can be such an emotional rollercoaster. Hoping your new treatment is a great fit for you.
I appreciate your medical-based approach to solving your skin's problems.
I’m so happy to hear you’re in a good place with your hair and skin 🥹 and thank you SO much ❤
Thank you for sharing this update!
Can we get an updated AM & PM skincare routine video?
Yes! I actually don't think anything has changed aside from this since my last ones but can definitely post new videos 😊
Saw your video with a chemist explaining copper peptides with a retinoid are fine but all derms including Doctorly say not to use it combined with retinoid and Vit c
Do you also use azelaic acid when you use Taz? or u alternate?
Abbey, I love the fact that you talked about Dr. Shereene Idriss. I use both of your advice all the time.
Lab Muffin had mentioned that if you're allergic to dust you could be allergic to snail mucin!
omg what?! that's so interesting
I think that’s great advice!
Lab muffin beauty did a post that covered this!
Yes definitely only use the prescription one if u can get your hands on retin a micro it is the best penetrates deeper with less irritation win win!!
1000% I like all of my compounds to come from the pharmacy via TARO. Their formulations are consistent and trusted.
I stopped it, too. I used it for years, but then all of a sudden it was drying out my skin. Cutting back didn't work. Good thing new and "improved" products are always coming out. Good luck, Abby!
Absolutely so exciting to have new options available for us! Thank you ❤
Abbey thank you so much for talking about this and how it’s so damaging when others suggest we need to change our diet, lifestyle, etc. I literally was nodding along and verbally said “Thank you” when you were talking about this
I love how so many of us reach our 30s and finally reach a place where we are content with our lives and choices and can keep our peace 🙏🏼
It’s such a relief compared to our early 20’s 😅❤
Wait until your 40’s- it gets even better!
I'm still thinking it's from kissing the new boyfriend 😉It's called beard burn. Even a little stubble or his aftershave can break you out🫂💗
exactly 💯
THIS!! When I started dating my boyfriend he used beard oil that had fragrance and it gave me a reaction (I have eczema and acne prone skin). Anyways now he uses a sensitive skin friendly one for me🩷
yep. it's usually them. our boyfriends' hygiene is always a wild factor
She may not have thought of this but it’s probably true
Exactly!! I’m struggling with the same thing at the moment. My skin is peeling and burning around my mouth since I’m kissing him. 😄
I definitely have oral spiro on my list to ask about if this doesn’t improve! Have heard amazing things about
I was on oral spironolactone and it improved my acne a lot but after a year and a half my derm made me go off it because he said it alters your hormones and is not safe to be on indefinitely.
@@CJbrieflittlecandlethis is not true. People are on spiro indefinitely all the time. It’s actually a blood pressure medication 😊
I am so happy for you!! I know so many people who have had accutane journeys and it literally changed their life forever
I have also taken it, it worked so well:D
I’m the same - Roaccutane totally changed my life! ❤
I’m almost 32 and am two months post Accutane. Best decision I ever made and wish I did it way sooner!
Yes I'm sure that's helped a ton too!
Which do you use?
@@silviarahim90 i live in Australia and we have Azclear available at the chemist here. It's 20% azalaic acid, you just have to ask for it from behind the counter. No prescription. 💖
@@samson_93 thank you so much!!
And yes, none of us will look like we did in our 20's and 30's once we hit that rocking chair, no matter how we eat or what we splatter on and/or in our faces.
people suggesting a diet change for acne are NOT advocating for orthorexia. quitting dairy solved my acne...i don't have orthorexia bc i avoid dairy
@@amandak.4246exactly. People saying to address the food you eat are not talking about limiting calories.
Me too, only took 3 months for a permanent cure🥰🥰🥰
I could not agree with this more!!! ❤
diet and hormones were what caused my acne. it's still good advice and a first line of defense when it's free to try an elimination diet. hormone stuff is harder
This is so relatable 😢😢
I finally saw a dermatologist a week ago and she started me on cabtreo (which has adapalene, clindamycin, and benzoyl peroxide in it) and winlevi (topical to target hormonal acne) and for the first time I have no active breakouts or breakouts on the way
that is amazing!! so happy for you
I’ve been using retin-a/tretinoin off and on since I was 15.
Say no more- that sounds exactly like my kind of book!!
@ changed my life! I hope you love it!
❤❤
Way to represent for the community!!
And tell me, how many years has your skin handled tret until THE COLLAPSE?"
I was like😳 Wha wha what collapse??...
_"In the vast majority of cases of adult hormonal acne with inflammatory lesions, _*_the cell turnover stimulated by tret is just too much for your glands. They work forced above their possibilities resulting in break outs. More cell turnover is not necessary better for your profile, EVERYBODY KNOWS IT, it' s common sense!"_*
No, not everybody knows it. Actually, nobody never mentioned it before🥺. I' m still digesting this info and the mix of emotions it caused on me after 13 years in tret. I' m 53 yo.
So glad for you, Abbey, and thank you for spreading it.
🧛🏻♀️🖤
So what are you using now instead of tret? Tazarotene or a retinal serum/cream?
I love Azalaic acid 15%. I personally found that works so much better for my skin personally then tret ever did.
Same!
Just want to say that you look so pretty here! Makeup looks less heavy today and I think that’s what’s looking good to me
As someone who suffered from acne all through high school and even now at 32, thank you for saying what you did.
Backstory: I had severe acne in my teens but in my 20's-34 my skin basically never broke out and was immaculately clear (with just a few small blackheads)
Then this past year I got super into skincare.
Enjoy the results!❤😊
omggg so excited to see long term results!
I love your hair videos, I know it has taken a lot but the information provided is needed. Please never stop hair videos
Why do you need to wait 30 minutes?
@Rebecca_Dolan My dermatologist recommended that I wait 10 min between each layer. 10 for the first layer of moisturizer. 10 for the tret and another 10 for the final layer of moisturizer. I go to the gym at night and take a shower when I get home. And after getting out I'm exhausted and just want to go right to sleep.
so glad you found what works best for you!
Thank you for sharing with us Abby! Love&Light from California 🤍🤍
Azelaic Acid changed my skin!!! I'll never stop using it
Thank you for sharing. .you are so honest.
Same purging phase but to this day our house is stocked up on coconut oil 😂
Its what worked for us.
Love the new hair color on you Abbey! Suits you so well❤
thank you so much ❤
Switching from Adapelene to tret was my biggest mistake. Caused perioral dermatitis. Now I’m using Adapelene again and it works so good for me.
Adapalene and nicacinamide serum has been my go to for the past 6 months. So far it’s working fantastically
I love, love, loved Adapalene and then one day…..BOOM! I developed an allergy to it. It was horrid. Back to Tret.
@ thanks for the advice! I honestly just have topical fomo haha and will probably just stick to tret a couple days a week and see how that goes!
No matter what people say, remember even with acne, you’re a beautiful person inside and out 🥰
Excellent breakdown of the issue. I look forward to reading the long- term results. TR
Your hair color is 🔥 lately!
