  • While shopping for a sanshin for a former professor of mine, I recently came across a lovely Okinawan couple who speak English and teach Sanshin. Even though I originally went to their shop to buy a Sanshin, I came out of there enrolled in the Sanshin lessons.
    I went to my first lesson and decided that I HAD to buy a Sanshin of my own.
    You can see what I sounded like after the first lesson here: • Learning SANSHIN 三線 ~ ...

    I did a quick google search and looked for Sanshin shops near my home, but ended up at a parking lot instead.
    There is an area of Okinawa called Koza Music Town and even though Google didn't yield any sanshin shop search results, I thought I would try my luck and go there anyway.
    We arrived at Teruya music shop and didn't see any Sanshin. The employees at the shop directed us to another shop, where they exclusively made and sold Sanshin.
    The Teruya Sanshin shopping experience was incredible. They were so warm and welcoming. They even served us tea and snacks while we were there.
    I will be uploading videos about my progress on the instrument, so subscribe to this channel so that you can see those!

      @@riverwater2922 you can find some off of ebay ranging from $50 to over $500 but dont expect a high level of quality because its people making their own and selling or passing them down. (you can still probably find a good quality one in the hundred to two hundred range but the main takeaway is you get what you pay for) it could be smart for you to buy a cheap one and learn on that. that way you can see if you actually like the instrument and not the idea of the instrument.

    This is awesome, pleased to hear you are enjoying Sanshin, I was inspired too. I also study Amami Isalnd Sanshin music which is even less accessible lol. I filmed a documentary there last year to share the amazing music and have a sample on my channel.
    I will go back to Okinawa/Amami Oshima 2018/2019. My Japanese maybe kind of similar level to yours, I am wondering are you also working as a English teacher or only working as a music teacher in Okinawa, is it difficult to teach students if they can't really speak english?
    Thank you in advance :)

    Thank you for posting the sanshin videos and purchasing discount! I'm from Okinawa, now living on CONUS East Coast, and had recently set a goal to first learn ukulele, and then later sanshin. I thought I would have a hard time finding a place to order a sanshin, let alone lessons, and now you've made it so easy for me! I'm looking forward to watching your sanshin videos, but first I need to finish the 30 day uke challenge.

    What' the difference between a Sanshin and a Shamisen? They are both three stringed instruments from Japan. Is it location, play technique, material, or all of the above?

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  6 років тому +3

      The shamisen came after the sanshin, I believe. The shamisen is not made out of snake skin or the synthetic, but a completely different material. I think the sanshin pick is also completely different.

    Sanshin reminds me of a shamisen. Do you pluck or strum the sanshin with your fingers?

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  6 років тому +1

      +Haem L hey! I believe the idea for the sanshin came from China to Okinawa. When Okinawans took the sanshin yo mainland Japan, the Shamisen was born. Now the two have evolved differently from my understanding.
      The sanshin is plucked with a special pick
