- In a recent interview when asked about Maximalism, designer Parmesh quoted that “Maximalism is about exuberance, not over-consumption. It’s about layering contextually; it’s about the juxtaposition of things where each layer adds something. It is very much about an overt and grateful celebration through colour, large shapes and more” and designer JJ Valaya’s answer was very straightforward-we are a maximalist country. Complexity is part of our culture and trickles down into everything starting from our food. ”
In the milieu of home décor maximalism implies mixing and matching, colour and print, displaying your favourite curios and travel momentos and everything else in multiples.

Stunning..exudes sophistication and warmth!
"Being true to yourself" also applies to minimalism, it just depends what you relate with and enjoy. Within India too there are various styles, a south Indian house is very different from a north Indian house. It cannot be truly generalized that India's natural instinct is maximalism. If someone relates to southern India or Japanese or Victorian designs, it still can be a house full of warmth. Nothing wrong with wanting to have an easy to clean home with a soft colour palette. It also depends upon the budget. You cannot have a 600sqft house with a bunch of low quality items or materials and call it maximalism. Like the designer in the video said, it needs much more attention in terms of design to make it look good and functional.
I think you said it better than the designer! Well done!
