Man, you HAVE to read the IDW comics, the first dozen of issues are incredible fun closing some plot points from Forces and after those begins the Metal Virus saga which is easily one of the most epic, emotional and overall intriguing stories ever told in the entire franchise, it is INSANELY GOOD. After the Metal Virus saga they introduce Surge which pretty much a much more engaging version of Scourge and probably one of the best villains in the entire franchise, the first Surge VS Sonic fight has the best dialogue exchanges you'll ever see in something Sonic related.
