Just learned if Louis Clark, Sr’s death when we didn’t see him at the Concert at he Epcot Flower Garden Festival (March 27, 2022). The last time we saw him was the the concert in March 2020 at Epcot. We missed him. May he Rest In Peace and our sympathies to Louis Clark, Jr.
I'd like to hope that Louis Clark could be included on In Memoriam during the March 14th, 2021 Recording Academy / GRAMMYs broadcast by CBS, unlike Kelly Groucutt & Hugh McDowell!
So much light is always shown on Jeff Lynne and I’ve no doubt it was his creativity and vision that drove what we all came to love in ELO however, I’ve always thought it was Louis Clarke’s orchestrations and arrangements that gave at least half of the distinct sound of ELO in the majority of the most successful years of the band. You could hear the warmth and textures disappearing as Lynne moved to more electronic and of the time modern means of music producing. Tandy’s keyboards seemed to be all that stayed constant outside of Lynne’s writing, vocals and guitar work. Even Bev Bevan’s drum work would be replaced by drum machines in Time, Secret Messages and Balance of Power albums. No doubt, cost of production and pursuit of new ways to express himself served Lynne as reasons to leave the heavily orchestrated sound of ELO behind. Even when he brought it back in his albums post 2000’s, the warm and lush orchestral sounds found when Clarke orchestrated are nice but nowhere near the caliber of Clarke’s arrangement. He is sorely missed.
Very touching watching a great musicians life slip past in under two minutes of snapshots, but knowing how many hearts were touched for years...and it does not stop. RIP
The string parts that he wrote gave ELO their distinctive and novel sound. Verses were rarely arranged to be identical and even choruses were varied. I don’t know if Louis or Jeff were responsible for this, but it certainly became less true after Louis was involved, so I credit him!

Tears flowing again. I know we say this often, but he was literally one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
