Wow another fantastic episode. Up until this point I completely misread my golden retriever, he would sit really slowly and in his own time, I thought he was just laid back. Training him has been challenging but after one session of treat diving this morning after revving him up first by jumping around and keeping the excitement high he’s a different dog. I asked him to sit a couple of times mid game and boom he did it instantly, best session ever! Thanks Susan, I listen to all your episodes, even if you think they aren’t relevant for your struggles…..there’s ALWAYS something useful in there😀

I like what you said today! Other trainers have given my male Samoyed rescue a pass when he is slow to respond to a command but no real suggestions as to how to improve his reaction time. They just say,
    --He's thinking
    --He's aloof
--He needs a more valuable treat
I will be trying what you demonstrated today.

Thank you for sharing more tips for our less confident dogs! I like to describe my dog as "cautious" more than shy. Sounds more appropriate, but I get why people say "shy dog". I will definitely try these tips to get more drive while training. I've already taught my dog hand target, search, it's yer choice (from Home School the Dog), but it sounds like I could re-train with these added tips to get more rapidity. And I'll try these chase games and the toy on a pole because my dog doesn't really like to tug yet.

Is it possible to have both a high drive and reserved dog? Or maybe just high energy? Is that the same as high drive? My dog loves treat diving, tugging, chasing, exploring, doing most new tricks, but also gets very scared of new things and loud noises. For example, He won’t go on certain streets because he’s heard loud motorcycles there. He loves going in one of his crates but won’t go in the new one we just got him even though we are doing it with shaping and getting energy up first with tug. Just wondering which category he fits in or maybe dogs can be in both based on different circumstances?

I've found that using Tellington touch helps reduce my dogs fear - for example, she will go outside willingly if I use the zebra touch on her belly. I can also get her to leave a spot where she is "frozen" using petting/touching. Once she is moving, I use various Recallers games to reengage. I use LTMA, the 1-2-3 game and the positive interruption game for excitement.

Great podcast ! I have a lower drive dog , not such a low drive dog now , I have found she loves catching food, Her favourite is running by my side and catching it on the fly. We use it a lot for recall. Also running away when she hand targets and catching the food has given me a great nose bop proper wrinkly nose. She is a whippet cross terrier. More whippet than terrier.

My puppy was just not interested in treats, or training, or toys. I thought he was more of a 'sit back and watch' type of dog (as his breeder described him too) with a low drive.. He was happy to engage with my dogs and liked to go for walks to explore, but would also sleep a lot - even more than a puppy would do, and would seek out to be alone when he was sleeping. Then his appetite got worse after the vet told me to mix kibble with his raw food. and things really went downhill from there. I thought that perhaps he was teething, and/or fussy - and the months went by, then came to a crises point when he did not eat anything at all and was getting thinner by the day - his blood tests were normal, the vet told me to put him on anti-allergy kibble. I was about to, then my instincts said otherwise. I switched him to only raw food, and sought out a vet nutritionist/herbalist who put him on a restorative raw diet appropriate for a puppy, and things started to turn around just before he was nine months old. My puppy is now 10 months old, happily engaged in training and play and with toys and much better with food. All of this had such an impact on his confidence too, it's such a relief! The support of the trainers on recallers and H360 is just phenomenal - so so happy to have signed up! I have learnt more in the last six months about dogs and dog training than I knew in my whole life of having dogs. Funny you mention the flirt pole - that was the thing that really got him started - tugging before had scared him and he would run away, now he's the bomb at tugging :) enjoying my puppy so much now thank you so much Susan Garrett and team for all of the amazing resources .

My border collie doesn't like tug.
It is my fault because the trainer I worked with prior to switching to positive reinforcement would correct the crap out of her if she tugged at her leash.
I have tried to encourage tugging behavior for a little over a year but she is still not into it.
Do you have any advice on how I can get her to enjoy tug again.
Because the only reinforcement I have for her is food.
