We have just bought 3.2 acres for horses. We have a Massey 35, and various trailers anyway. For us the most useful stuff so far has been the manual tools. In particular a 'grafter' that I was given by the bloke I bought one of the trailers off. It's like a small spade on a metal handle and is great for localised digging of weeds, but is also strong enough to lever rocks out etc... I do second the chainsaw for pallet chopping, and a decent strimmer has been vital too. A topper is next on the list for us!
Great vid as ever! I work on several smallholdings and the requirements vary somewhat from place to place. Well done for narrowing your list down but I'm sure you'd agree you could've had a list of 50! Excellent point about the chainsaw size - everyone wants to go in big-guns but you rarely need to be handling a long bar (and paying for fuel). People new to chainsaws - go on an introduction course - they can be deadly!
Hi there. Totally agree with you. I asked my father in law for his top 5 and they were all different to mine. I can imagine all the arguments to be had!! Oh yes, definitely agree with you about chainsaws and getting some advice on using them. A
Well done on being able to pick just 5 items as the list is endless. For the tractor if like me you are (weren't) familiar with them talk to someone who is such as the local farmer.I bought an old grey fergie only to find it wasn't up to what I wanted to do with it. Wouldn't be without our post hole auger, .Also buy the best quality item you can afford,I killed 2 cheap brushcutters before buying a Stihl. Of course there's all the other stuff like buckets, wheelbarrows bamboo canes that seem to be in constant demand.
Hi there. 100% agree. I’ve bought cheap stuff before (and still do occasionally) only to find that it breaks 3 months later. It’s amazing how often our auger is used. Our neighbour has just borrowed this weekend too. Those old fergies do have a certain appeal….
Check out ebay, local farm auctions Facebook marketplace. We got ours from eBay. It is a little bit of luck but if it's working before you buy then you know that most things are going to be ok. Good luck.

Just finished reading your new book. Very inspiring for us who always thought owning a vineyard was for the "special elite"
Hi there. Thank you so much!! That's very kind of you. Much appreciated. A
Very useful, I'm moving to a small holding in wales. Good advice.
Thank you. Good luck on your small holding. A

Not a machine, but one of the most useful tools for me is my wheelbarrow.
Hi there. Yes, that is a good suggestion. I didn't even think of that but I use one all the time too. A
4.5k for a small tractor is surprisingly accessible for someone like me...good to know....good to know...
