Gaki no tsukai is actually a game show where basically the contestants, who are the same group of comedians every year, must try to not laugh and get a punishment if they do. It is actually pretty funny and I recommend it.

The Gaki no Tsukai one was way off. The script reading was one small part of the 24h special that they used to do every year. On top of that Gaki no Tsukai does a variety of things, not just the no-laugh batsus.

A lot of these game shows were very briefly aired before getting cancelled (for obvious reasons), and the others they tend to exaggerate what happens a lot. In ‘let’s go to the end of the world’ they just travel the country and do all the fun things there. They zoomed in on the bear cage and acted like it happened every episode 😅

For the Gaki no Tsukai one, you are not allowed to laugh and laugh = be spanked. So like the way things goes, they are doing the 2015/16 Batsu Game with a detective theme in that year’s Batsu Game. Batsu means punishment and true to its name, laugh means punished (as mentioned before). So the reason why the funny pronunciation caused them to be out is that they are watching a random recording of a DVD and they laugh because its funny so they are out. This Batsu Game is done every New Years Eve and follows a specific theme, like detectives in 2015/16, high school students in 2005/06, spies in 2010/11 and prisoners in 2014/15. The 5 main contestants are popular, middle-aged comedians from Japan. The Batsu Game is one of many segments of the Gaki no Tsukai series. There’s one other segment where you receive a full-course French meal but have to fart to get to each dish or another series where you cook specific dishes like pizza, pasta, okonomiyaki, etc. with whatever ingredient you want and get ratings from 0 to 10 stars. This show and its many segments are super hilarious and I love it. P.s. I’ve recommended this, specifically the Batsu Game to be a Sidemen Sunday several times.

A lot of these "Japanese Game Shows" are very badly misrepresented to western audiences. Most of them are small segments on "variety shows", which often feature recurring comedian hosts and are wide ranging in what they do. The most famous of these is "Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende" (commonly showrtened to Gaki no Tsukai), which means "Downtown's I'm not an errand boy". Downtown are an extremely popular, well respected, and influential comedy duo (Matsumoto Hitoshi and Hamada Masatoshi), their are accompanied by their regular co-hosts Tsukitei Housei and duo Cocorico (Tanaka Naoki and Endou Shouzou). In the west, Gaki no Tsukai is most well known for the yearly no-laughing batsu (punishment) games. Each year the cast spend 24 hours at the mercy of the producers, who do everything they can to make them laugh. If they laugh, a man dressed in camo with a balaclava will slap their butts with a baseball bat (probably rubber). Gaki no Tsukai also well known in the west for the Silent Library segment, which was later adapted into the American TV show of the same name. Another example of a regular segment is "Absolutely Tasty", where the hosts create two versions of a dish (e.g. pizza) using their own ingredients. A running joke is the Endou adds the very strong "Frisk" mints to every dish with disastrous results. In many ways the randomness and style of TV they make is very similar to the sort of content produced on UA-cam, with many concepts seeming completely pointless but made enjoyable by the novelty and the hosts.
