Just a remark from a Canadian who was around in those days, when Triumph broke into the Canadian Rock scene, Rush were not that well known yet so they definitely were not influenced by Rush, at least not in the beginning. They just happen to be similar type bands, but Rush was more progressive while Triumph were straight ahead Rock for the most part. Ric Emmett is a great singer and guitarist, you can't go wrong checking out more of their music. I was lucky enough to see both Triumph and Rush in 1977, they were both amazing.
@@mvunit3 you're right, Rush didn't break internationally until Moving Pictures, and they started really taking over the scene in Canada after Permanent Waves, but Triumph were huge right from the start. Just because Emmett has a high pitched voice, doesn't mean he was influenced by Rush.

Yes, Triumph! Great trio, Rik Emmet is a killer guitarist and vocalist. Gil Moore is a real “rock drummer”, and also sings lead and backing vocals. Well said, Mike, from Tim in Mississauga, home of Metal Works. I met and interviewed Rik in Burlington about 15 years ago for the Post newspaper. Seemed like the usual nice Canadian guy. Such a talented singer and virtuoso rock guitar player and of several guitar genres.
I saw Triumph in 1985 at a Jacksonville GA concert. I worked my way to the front against the stage right before Eddie Money (the opener) began his set. One of the best concerts I attended in the 80s!

PHENOMENAL song, guys! This was one of my staple rock albums way back when at NYU and Seton Hall U in the early 80's, when I threw my weekend dorm rock parties! Oh man, the memories!
The guitarist and lead vocalist on this song and majority of other Triumph songs is Rik Emmett. He is a very accomplished guitarist in a variety of styles, classical, jazz, blues, folk/fingerstyle, rock/metal and so on. The drummer Gil Moore is also a terrific vocalist. Some songs feature him on lead, but either way they always have stellar vocals including backup and harmonies! In 1977, Triumph had just put out "Just a Game" and I thought they'd be around forever. Thirty years later, part of the reason I married my husband was that this one one of his favourite songs. He knew Triumph? He was in. Great choice, f0lks. And nice to see Lex again!
I cannot tell you how many times I listened to this album. growing up. My younger sister says everytime she hears Triumph flash back to when we were both in High School jamming out to Triumph. Underrated for sure.
They have a lot of good tunes, but my fav is The City. The US 83 concert really shows how tight they could play and the unreal power of Rik's voice. Thanks for sharing!
One of my all time favorite bands. So happy I got to see them in the 80's. Their concerts were top tier with epic light shows. Glad you dig this song. Rush weren't really a direct influence on Triumph, although they did have progressive elements in their music...they were primarily a hard rock band with strong vocals (two lead singers) and usually implemented lyrics with positive messages. Not to mention Rik Emmett is a virtuouso guitar player who wasn't afraid to inject classical and jazz bits in their music. Just keep exploring this band, you will NOT be disapointed!
Another great Canadian band, love it...Triumph is my second favourite and of course Rush my first favourite Canadian band. Lots of great talent in Canada.

Today, Rik plays almost exclusively blues ans jazz and classic music. One of our most underrated Canadian artists. One of my favorite.
Such a brilliant track off a fantastic album in Allied Forces... the drummer Gil is a helluva singer as well and sings lead on a few tracks... just an awesome band... as others have mentioned, highly recommend checking out the US Festival live performance. I have the DVD and have watched it many times on UA-cam as well, they are just amazing live.
They have all of their big songs on UA-cam live from Halifax in 1987. Those are absolutely the best performances of Triumph. 'Lay It On The Line' live from Halifax is the pinnacle of Triumph. Their studio stuff is good, but they were an arena band. They absolutely shine when they play live.
I recently watched a documentary about Triumph, they were friends with Rush. This song was always on MTV when I was growing up, along with several other great tunes they played. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Hmmm, what Documentary was that? I'd LOVE to see it! Or, is it the link I left on my comment? - Hope you had a GREAT time with Kansas with N&L and Friends!
Love it! Triumph was a loud concert...So great with a powerful positive message that just makes you feel good! Rik Emmett and the guys are so talented. You've got to hear "Lay It On The Line" and "Magic Power".
My favorite song from this talented band. For a treat catch a live version of this song and watch Rik Emmet hit those high notes and shred the guitar at the same time. Rik is a broadly skilled guitarist, with skills in jazz, classical and flamenco as well has rock. When not writing or performing music, Rik has also been a writer for "Guitar Player" magazine and taught college courses on song writing and music business. Mike Levine is the bassist and did the keyboards as well as producing some of their albums. Good call on the drums Nick, Gil Moore cites John Bonham and Ian Paice as his favorite drummers and was always the most heavy metal member of the band.
Nick & Lex, great song. Triumph , just another great three piece band from Canada. Rik Emmett with the great vocals (he does sound like Geddy Lee) & totally underrated guitarist. Gil Moore the drummer who also sings a lot of the lead vocals. And Mike Levine on bass & keyboards. I seen them three times 1978, 79 & 80. But the first time they only had the one album out & I remember the add they had on the radio & TV actually. The add said. A band you never heard of is a band you'll never forget & the were like $3.50. And the add was right they was fantastic. They always had a great live show to with explosions & a great light show. Also the said during the show. Our friends from Canada Rush told us Pittsburgh was a great rock town & we were & are. They always would get the audience during Rock & Roll Machine to chant DISCO SUCKS, which it did. Great memories from those shows. You'll definitely enjoy their discography, a lot of great music from these guys. Rik Emmett has some good solo albums to. If you're going to do an album. I would suggest Just A Game. That's definitely my favorite. Hope you guys enjoyed the Kansas show.
Nice reaction :) I"m glad you discovered Triumph. Rik Emmet is a world class guitarist and I think there is a solo instrumental by him on each album that shows off his virtuosity on classical, acoustic and electric guitar. Definitely think it's something that you'll really enjoy. Check out Midsummer's Daydream off of the Thunder 7 album, you'll love it :)
Triumph is one of the greatest live bands ever! I saw them in 1982 on the Allied Forces tour and in 1986 on the Sport of Kings tour. Such a talented band!
I'm a total Triumph fan from back in the day and never understood why they didn't have the traction of Rush (of which I'm a huge fan) here in the US. They were so underrated and so good. I love me some Triumph... They rock.
Yes! One of My Favorite bands of All time! Rik Emmett is lead and vocal! Gil Moore is drummer and lead and Mike Levine is bass and keyboards. They are completely awesome! I saw them on Allied Forces Tour. An unbelievable light show and incredible concert! I adore Rick!! Definitely an underrated guitarist! The both of you will absolutely love the live US festival!! Everyone was talking about how they stood out above the rest that day! Watch it with the volume turned up! Just A Game, Ordinary Man, Hold On, Magic Power, World Of Fantasy Never Surrender, Bringing It On Home, Say Goodbye and Lay It On The Line, Just a few you would enjoy!
There is a live concert, that someone more familiar with the Internet will point out, in which you will be delighted to watch and hear that guitarist having so much fun. We were listening to Triumph and Rush in the school auditoriums and bars when these bands were starting out. I had the joy of running a follow spot at my Highschool for a Lighthouse concert. A great time to be alive and young enough to enjoy many different types of music.
This band was such a big influence on me growing up in the 80’s. They have different sounds. The drummer also sings. Him and the guitar player split singing about 50/50 and each guy sings his own songs. Gil Moore, the drummer, writes the more traditional rock songs and Rik Emmett has the more emotional side. Together it really works. There are so many great songs. My favorite Rik Emmett songs are Just A Game, Lay It On The Line, Magic Power, A World Of Fantasy, Ordinary Man, Never Surender, Time Goes By, and Stranger In A Strange Land. Plus each album has a solo guitar song and every one of those are incredible. For Gil Moore songs my favorites are Rock N Roll Machine, Moving On, American Girls, I Live For The Weekend, Tear The Roof Off, Allied Forces, Battle Cry, When The Lights Go Down, Spellbound, and Follow Your Heart. Their biggest radio hits were probably Lay It On The Line, Spellbound, and Follow Your Heart.
GREAT band - love so much of their material. Rik Emmett is highly underrated as a guitar player and is freaking amazing. Saw them live twice in St. Louis. Fun fact: if they were playing a town with an NHL franchise, Mike Levine (their bass player) many times would wear that city’s hockey jersey for the show.
Agree with @daveburns, the US Festival performance is absolutely amazing. Rick Emmett, is absolutely captivating. A great guitar player, but also fully a talent vocalist. Nick is thinking of the band called Anvil. A fun 80's metal band.
Lay it on the Line, Hold On, Follow Your Heart, Spellbound and Magic power are their hits ! They have two singers , Rik Hemmett the guitarist and Gil Moore the drummer. The high voice is Rik Hemmett a great guitarist.
2 of my favorite reactors covering one of my favorite bands. How nice! I do hope you get a chance to dig into a little more Triumph. Nick, you mentioned the positive lyrics. They had the reputation as the good guys in a world of bad boy rock. It was a good example to set for teenagers like me who were into a little of this and a little of that and staying on the edge of trouble all the time. Rik Emmett: lead vocals, lead guitar Gil Moore: occasional lead vocals, drums Mike Levine: bass, keyboards, Forest Gump Lookalike Winner (long-haired cross-country running phase) Enjoy the Kansas show!
As I recall guitarist Ric Emmett played a double neck guitar. One twelve string the other six which allowed him on this song, anyways, to seamlessly switch.
One of My Favorite Bands! You would Love the Live recordings of this Band I got to see this Band 9 times and Wow! The Singer Guitar Player is Incredible I have been to almost 700 concerts and this Singer has at least 3 Top Performances I have seen the Songs are Uplifting Songs Great choice! So Y’all are going to see Kansas for first time Awesome You will Love Wish You could have gotten to see some of their early performances but You will Love 50 years of Kansas especially listen they are going to play about 3 Songs off Monolith People of The South Land and Gilmse of Home!
Triumph spent their career living under the shadow of Rush. And as you can imagine, there were always comparisons between the two bands, being as they were both from Canada, and both power trios. And of course, Rik Emmett sang in a similar register to Geddy Lee. I think this was ultimately what prevented the group from making it as big as they could have. They enjoyed a brief moment in the spotlight, from the early to mid '80's but ultimately fizzled out. Not many bands can have the longevity of Rush; 40 years, but they have some great tunes.
Another 3 man band from Canada. They are amazing live. I saw them in1979 in Sacramento. Rik Emmet was so underrated as a guitar player, but in my mind, he is in the top ten of all time. I know that's saying a lot, but throw in his great vocals...just phenomenal. If I may, I would suggest their album Just A Game. Good stuff. Keep them coming, guys.
one of the most criminally under-rated bands there is. Rik's vocals are always so wild. Check them out live, they sound almost the same as the studio versions. This was better than fifteen years before autotune as well, that's all Rik singing...
I grew up listening to Triumph and well remember taking in their concert in New Years 1981 at Maple Leaf Gardens. I always said the best 3 man band our there amazing vocals and guitar work. Gil is amazing on drums and a great vocalist himself. They are so under rated but simply put, one of the best
I think the real hidden treasure on this album is “Ordinary Man”, but IMO their most hidden treasure is “The City.” All I’m going to say is it’s an epic in 3 movements and I think you’ll both love it.
Good tip - just listened to "Ordinary Man" and wow! Honestly, felt like this song could have been a hidden track on my favorite album of all-time, Operation Mindcrime from Queensryche. It had a very prog feel to it, and lyrically reminded me of that album. Excellent song!
As I mentioned in my stand-alone comment; I actually just sent them "4" 😊: Progressions of Power Allied Forces Never Surrender Thunder Seven . . . I _should have_ gotten them the whole catalogue 🤔.
Watch this song live from the US festival. It’s crazy . Rik Emmett is the guitar player and singer. Unbelievably talented
Agree. That whole set was fantastic. US Festival 83' was their apex moment and they are better live. Always was.
I agree. This is a performance you should not miss. Off the charts!

It's from 1987
OOPS! Typo.@@garytate3075
The song was written for a family member, an Aunt I think, who was battling cancer.
The first concert I went to was this tour awesome one of the best shows I’ve seen
This band ROCKS. One of my all-time faves, and, like Rush, only 3 guys.
Magic Power is probably the ideal follow-up for you kids. 🙂😋
Great tune Magic Power...
A great band. One of the few better live. To truly appreciate this power trio. You need to watch live.
Triumph is a Great band! Rik Emmett has a Great voice and Rocks that lead guitar!
Another great one from Triumph is "The City: War March. Rics guitar work is truly amazing!
This one on my uplifting song playlist.
I'll give you another one :) . . .

- hope you enjOy \m/.
They weren't friends with Rush, that's from Rik Emmett himself, he's only ever met Alex, whom he worked with on the Res 9 album.
Love it! Triumph was a loud concert...So great with a powerful positive message that just makes you feel good! Rik Emmett and the guys are so talented. You've got to hear "Lay It On The Line" and "Magic Power".
watching them perform live makes it doubly impressive
Try Lay it on the Line. My personal favorite.
Agreed, my second favorite Triumph song.
Great documentary about Triumph out now 🎶🇨🇦
My favorite song from this talented band.
Check out the whole Allied Forces album. Plenty of gems on that album.
My favorite is probably Embrujo, but there’s not a bad one.
@@philsmith2444 Embrujo will freakin' BLOW them away! Midsummers Daydream though is just beautiful :).
Yes. "Little Boy Blues" is an excellent instrumental off of Thunder Seven.
Triumph is one of the greatest live bands ever! I saw them in 1982 on the Allied Forces tour and in 1986 on the Sport of Kings tour. Such a talented band!
A must watch!!
One of canada's best never wrote a bad song great band
Rik Emmett is amazing and there are many incredible Triumph songs to review!
Now you’ve done it. Once you’ve gone down this rabbit hole you’re hooked. They were a great great band
The 83 American festival performance is a must watch.
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
Rik Emmett, not hemmett
@@garytate3075 oups ! Thank you !
Triumph was such an underrated band for the era. Hope you do a deep dive.
I love Triumph!! Geddy vibes for sure.
Nick I can't believe you've never listened to TRIUMPH 😮 Better late than never 😊
"Nothing in my pockets and I've nothing up my sleeves. I keep my magic in my heart!"
They sound even better live.
Rik Emmett: lead vocals, lead guitar
Gil Moore: occasional lead vocals, drums
Mike Levine: bass, keyboards, Forest Gump Lookalike Winner (long-haired cross-country running phase)
Enjoy the Kansas show!
As I recall guitarist Ric Emmett played a double neck guitar. One twelve string the other six which allowed him on this song, anyways, to seamlessly switch.
I am a longtime Triumph and Zeppelin fan you are right on with the drum comparison, I never really thought of that!! My two favorite bands!!
Also Triumph Magic Power Awesome Song
Guys watch the full US festival concert from 1983. One of the most amaxing sounding live performances ever recorded. Just brilliant
GORGEOUS track!
Do you mean Hot Time in the City?
@@brianbarringer4309 No, “The City”, from the original Rock & Roll Machine.
Ordinary Man...is one of their pinnacles
Good tip - just listened to "Ordinary Man" and wow! Honestly, felt like this song could have been a hidden track on my favorite album of all-time, Operation Mindcrime from Queensryche. It had a very prog feel to it, and lyrically reminded me of that album. Excellent song!
I jealous you got the whole discography! I know a couple of their albums and they are really good. Cant wait to watch you guys discover more.
As I mentioned in my stand-alone comment; I actually just sent them "4" 😊:
Progressions of Power
Allied Forces
Never Surrender
Thunder Seven
. . . I _should have_ gotten them the whole catalogue 🤔.
