Thank you so much for this discussion. My grandpa served on this ship as a Seaman at this time. He became so sick, he never fully recovered. This really opened my eyes on what he managed to live through.
Hi Cindy, my great-grandfather was one of the unfortunate souls who passed away on the ship due to Influenza. We knew he died en route but didn't know why. Luckily, I was able to do some genealogical research and discover the truth. He was an Army private.
My Great Aunt Millie sailed over to Brest France on the SS Leviathan on May 22 1918.. so before this (fortunately). She was an Army Nurse. She returned to the states on the SS Mauritania...
You can search Ancestry to find which ship a particular soldier sailed on during WWI. I just learned my grandfather sailed with his unit to and from France on the SS President Grant and the SS Leviathan. He served in the 371st Infantry Regiment under French command since the US Army was segregated I had no idea. I have to do more research.
My great-grandfather Denis Walsh was on the fateful voyage. His mother was told that he died en route to the war of Influenza but that was all the information she was given.
I have many pictures from a medical unit. some pictures of troops returning possibly on the leviathan. I believe this unit was out of Fort Dupont Delaware.
One question re “ The Spanish Flu” in general. Why was there no contemporary mention of the Spanish flu in Congress ? The same applies to the UK Parliament records in Hansard.
Good job. In the great influenza book written by a great author it's not coming to my head but I'm thinking about getting it from Amazon is that people aboard the Leviathan they had a Captain's log but after a while they didn't put a lot of information because a lot of people were overwhelmed by the Dead at first they were giving them proper burials at Sea that after a while they put them in some cloth wrapped their bodies set a prayer and pushed the bodies off that's what I was to understand

Order a book called , The Invisible Rainbow, by Arthur Firstenberg, and it should answer some of these questions for you.
