For the same reason Wonder Woman should never be played by a man. Women are doing great in roles already written for women! Also, there are a lot more movies and series coming out with women heroines in them, especially from the Marvel franchise which has helped break ground gender-wise. I'm no SJW, just the opposite, but I can understand why women have lamented the fact that there aren't more female leads on the big screen. However, it's women who can change this by going and supporting movies and tv with female leads, because capitalism doesn't care about sex, race, or anything else, it cares about money. Considering more than half the world's population are women, they can easily change the social direction by the way they spend their money, at least in Western-style democratic countries.
So, have an iconic hero change genders just so women can feel empowered. That's a political decision, not an aritistic one. Doing so, simply makes the aritistic process behind it meaningless. Look at what happend to Marvel comics, their sales have rapidly declined, maybe not because the new leads are female, but they are entirely different from the heroes we know.

I would very much love to see more strong female protagonists but we don't need to reinvent existing characters to do it. A Bond-like character played by a female in the Bond universe would be cool although care must be taken so it doesn't feel forced.
Shows like Covert Affairs and In Plain Sight had great lead female characters. Just create more characters like that.

I know a lot of people are hating on Priyanka for saying it, but the fact is that such iconic roles were created and then men were cast into it because women were considered just eye candy in that time. While women driven original action movies are created, wonder woman for example, it has a different impact, a good impact. The issue with oceans 8 and ghostbusters reprise is that too much importance is given to the older ones and they were from a different media age, which creates higher expectations for female reboot in the current time when too many movies are being made and there are too many streaming services. Believe me, even if oceans 14 was being made with men now, it might not have been that great, but people are coming for oceans 8 because it was a female reboot. So even when a new James bond movie is to be created, a bad story will still suck, but if it is with a female bond, people will blame it on them instead of the fact that the movie was not well made. While i agree that new movies need to be created for women, like Jessica Chastain's 355, these iconic roles like James Bond which are considered make or break for someone's career (for the director, for the actor, for the bond girl), I think it should be considered that a woman can play that part as well. If we can have different James Bonds over the decades, we can have someone who is a little more different, let's say a female actor, and then we can move to represent other sections! So I agree with you, it should not be forced upon, like hey look we have made a feminist movie, but it should be normalised 'this one is a woman'. Sorry it must read like I am rambling but was just venting.

Id have a 008 film series to run parallel to bond. Do what disney does, alternate the movies. Each movie could build off the other. "After bond dealt with a at in x, we need you to deal with b at y, and then bond will deal with c at z"

Its like why video game movies are almost never any good. "People already Saw that in the games/book! Why would they want to see the exact same thing again?" People Want familiarity. People Want to see these characters brought to the big screen AS IS. They dont want them to be unrecognizable, which is what gender swapping or even race changing the character would do.
One reason why daniel craig was so well recieved was because (minus the hair color) he was basically the most accurate portrayal of james bond Ever. (Minus most of the sexism).
And people put so much focus on the originals because yes It is the standard you have to hold yourself to.
While i dont think gender swapping the characters for ghostbusters or oceans 8 was what made them fail (it was not having funny people write the script for 1, and having no actual heist in the other that did that) but what it did do was almost alienate the audience they already would have had. It was as if they were saying "yeah guys this movie franchise Isnt for you anymore! Bridesmaids fans come on over! Look we got Anne Hathaway too, princess diaries fans!" It was such a drastic change in tone that it threw off the old fans. Its one of the things that kathleen kennedy has been rightfully bashed for with star wars as of late- she has actually said "well this franchise isnt Meant for you anymore".
What would i want out of the james bond franchise? Women spy allies, maybe some villains, or a spin off series to run parallel to it starring a badass woman.
I do not want james bond to be a woman. Because doing so isnt just flipping a switch.

@@ConnorNotyerbidness - I would like to elaborate a counter with Batman. Having no access to Batman comics, just knowing the name Batman, I first came to know Batman as Christian Bale, hence when Ben Affleck came on, I couldn't comprehend him or his character arc. Race and gender didn't matter, clearly. Also, most of the iconic characters which during the time of creation would have been written for straight white men, this is slightly biased against anyone else being cast in this modern era. That is just my additional take on this issue.
That being said, I find your rationale to be logical, sane and well, rational. Without hate, without snide, simply for the sake of a logical conversation. So thank you for that! I do see your point. I just want people to take risk with diversity, be it gender, race or orientation, so that one day we get great movies with such roles and not just time-pass.
