I want to take a moment and talk about this new era of Melanie's.
First off I want to say Melanie hasn't "changed". Melanie is the same person she's always been, her character Cry Baby has just evolved. Second the music this era is maybe the most authentic music we've gotten from Melanie as it is self produced. If you simply don't like the new sound/look that is completely fine, you can go back and listen to/watch the songs from her previous albums, they aren't gone. If you are a fan of Melanie you will respect her decision to create the type of art she wants to create 🧚🏼♀️💗

Only thing I disagree with how she handled this metamorphosis on her actual youtube channel. Changing the thumbnails to the same "RIP crybaby" makes it hella hard to try and rewatch anything besides her new stuff. And the comments are all turned off. So much history of early fan interactions gone.

I’m sure the old thumbnails will return after this era is over; I can’t see why they would stay. Unless it’s to really put emphasis on CryBaby’s death, but that kind of long term decision seems… jarring say the least, for fans and new listeners after the Portals era will end.
I searched it up, and this means she's back, but she's changed. So therefore metaphorically, her old self has 'died' and now she's back from the 'dead'. Her years of being inactive from Singing has changed her, and gave her a new perspective of life.

I love this song, even more so now. My cat died yesterday, she was my baby, my old lady cat, my best friend ever since I was 6 years old. Been listening to the perils of Crybaby since I was 14 (I’m 22 now). Don’t think I’ve ever cried this hard over the loss of a character, this song captures the grieving of Crybaby and the joy of her rebirth. Even though I’m heartbroken I’m overjoyed, it’s such a beautiful complexity of emotions. Crybaby eased the pain of my youth, and she will continue to in the next life. Truly a phenomenal song and I cannot wait to hear the album in its entirety! 🫶🫶🫶💗💗💗

MELANIES THOUGHTS ON THE SONG- I usually have titles picked out early on in the conceptual phase of an album before even writing anything. This one was a must, and I just wasn't getting it right anytime I tried writing it with other people. One day, I sat in the portal room alone and started singing melodies. I heard a spirit with a completely different tone than mine repeat a melody I had sung out loud in the silence and it sent a chill down my body. I was really scared at first, then continued on, using that moment as confirmation from the other side. I laid down the chords after hours of searching through Omnisphere for an instrument that would reverberate through my soul. I added a simple drum loop in the chorus (that was later replaced by production from my favorite collaborator CJ Baran, as well as live drums from Ilan Rubin of Nine Inch Nails - who also put drums down for a couple of other songs.) When I was done writing the song, that same day I played it for my best friend of 22 years who is like my sister. She had just experienced multiple losses in her family. While she was listening on headphones, tears rolled through. The song ended, she looked at me and said "that's the one."
the subtlety of the cheeriness in the creepy aura as well as the visual art is so fitting, re imagining her afterlife as a form of a fairyesque spirit rather than a ghost... add to that her beautifully well sculpted lyrics and her iconic voice, it's truly going to be a remarkable return when she comes up with a whole new album complimenting this era!

This song is truly amazing. Wolves howl to communicate with others, and you can hear a wolf howl in the background meaning she wants to communicate with living. Crybaby is no longer alive, but Melanie Martinez chooses to celebrate death as something natural and not something to be afraid of.
Yes. Nobody in the comments seems to care about the themes of this song or the upcoming era but it's clear Melanie is in some kind of spiritualism and witchcraft moment and I love it. I feel like this album is going to be all about souls, witchcraft, integrating your shadow, etc. I love that she says clearly into mysticism and is incorporating these themes into her work. It feels so reinvigorating and fresh and like a healthy interesting evolution for her. Like she's taken stock of her life and career and regrouped to take complete control of her experiences and narrative.

I just watched the movie again. I love how portals intertwines with K-12. Crybaby always explained that she’s never scared of death. I love how this song intertwines with that meaning.
Another thing I love is the fact that Melanie always has a story with her music. It’s not just music, it’s a whole series. It gives us something to theorize about while we don’t have that much information.
I really do hope we get another movie with portals. It would be such an amazing sequel with K-12.

3 days after PORTALS dropped, my aunt passed away. She was very close family, closer than the average aunt.
We were on the way to vacation when it happened, and all I can recall is tears running down my face like a faucet, while DEATH screamed in my ear.

1:41 sounds so ethereal, I don’t even know how to describe the emotions I feel when I hear this part but it makes me teary eyed every time.
If the chorus is removed from the song it’s literally the darkest lullaby I heard and would make the song gothic pop.
I get an evanescence fallen vibe in the darker parts of the song it’s truly haunting.

This album means so much to me, I’ve been listening to her since she started music and I told my cousin about her and I was disappointed that she didn’t have much songs yet but I was excited to watch her make new songs and potentially grow big one day. a few years later my cousin got me some of her merch for my birthday and I was so excited and we listened to all her new albums together and talked and talked about them. My cousin passed way 9/17/22 and she won’t be here to listen to Melanie’s new album with me this time but I hope when it releases I can listen in her honor and cherish the memories that Melanie’s music has brought to me with my cousin and be thankful for how much closer it made us. Thank you Melanie for giving me memories to forever hold onto in my heart. 💗

As a writer, I appreciate how Mel designs all her songs around the character, Crybaby. This whole experience has been one huge story. With that said, I think it’s interesting and important to note that Mel released a short promo video showing Crybaby’s grave and released this song before her album drops on the 31. Crybaby has clearly died, opening up a whole new adventure in the storyline. Freaking genius!!!❤

I don't know what is it with Melanie's music. Im not obsessed like that, I don't have a Stan account, I don't make fan transition videos, i don't watch a million clips, interviews, insta stories... I don't feel parasocially attached to her at all. But whatever she puts out new music, it connects exactly to what I'm going through or feeling currently in my life. The first time I listened to this it felt like an out of body experience, tears running down my face, felt like my chest was ripping open. It happened with her old music as well. It's incredible. I don't know how to describe it. I feel my feelings getting more intense, and i can see them clearly, like when you get high when you are already emotional.

My love for Melanie Martinez is ridiculous. There are very few artists that I listen to everything they do, and she is one of them.
I’ve heard this song many times. Whenever I listen to it, my head cannon of the song is: it’s a story being told by the earthbound spirit of a girl who died recently, say weeks or months ago, and is conveying her sorrowful, melancholy tale of how she died, and how lonely she is, to a group of friends and family, and other witnesses.
