Just loved seeing your funny approach to dealing with aphids! You are truly multi-talented in the athletic department! Skate boarding, juggling, lobbing balls back and forth with Steph. But best of all, was the bit with the 2 of you skipping through the garden 😂😂😂!
The skipping! Perfection. Skateboarding and juggling too - such talent 😜 I feel the same way when other gardeners obsess about perfection and how to "fix" the garden that is a natural living thing.
Every year you show your Chinese Dogwood in bloom and every year it's like I see it for the first time. What a showstopper! Everyone needs either a Chinese Dogwood or a Chinese Viburnum somewhere in their garden.
I love everything you both did during your aphid invasion except for the skipping. I recently ruptured my Achilles tendon and I hope to be able to walk in time for your open garden day! Hopefully skipping in the garden is not a requirement for entry. 😂
My aphid story: I have butterfly milkweed plants for the Monarch butterflies and they for years always have plenty of aphids and ants. I have usually just ignored them or occasionally turned the garden hose on them but no chemicals (for the butterfly caterpillars). Then one day while weeding (pulling excess volunteers) I was bit by fire ants multiple times. I promptly applied ant killers to the local nest. In just a few days like magic all the ants were gone, all of the aphids were gone (not one could be found) and there were dozens of assassin bugs all over the milkweed plants. Without the ants there to protect them apparently the aphids don't last long when there are predators around.
😅🤣😅😆🤣😂😆 I LOVED THIS!!!! Dang Jim!!!! You are very athletic!!! 🛹🛹🤹♂️🤹♂️It's the most fun video I've probably ever seen!!! Big laughs you two!!! SOOOO FUNNNN!! ❤😊
Seeing y'all clowning around was fun, lol. I'm so happy to not have to worry about aphids and other small problems in my garden thanks to your teaching. I'm just enjoying some early blooming plants from this warm spring.
I have the same philosophy in my garden, I mostly let nature take it's course. I hope that I've planted enough good beneficial plants, shrubs and trees to attract all the good insects, which will in turn balance out the bad ones, and so far after 10 years at this property has worked just fine. Other than at the beginning of my time here (I put some stuff down for ants), I haven't used a single product for pests. The property just kind of balances itself out. It's not always 100% perfect and beautiful, but you really don't have to do anything, and that includes my vegetable garden.
Laughed and loved the aphid treatment. A quick FYI because I know from previous years it's a favorite tomato. Renee's Garden seeds just put Bronze Torch tomato packs on sale. I think it's 20 seeds/pack for $2.40. Thanks for all the content you've created.
Great sense of humor about dealing with bugs in the garden but at the same time very true! Earlier this spring I found some aphids on our Kinzley's Ghost honeysuckle vine and other bugs chewing on one of our viburnum shrubs so I paused for a second and thought of what Jim said as I knew these shrubs were in great shape without any stress (maybe too much rain?). Days later we started seeing ladybugs around our garden which took care of our minor inconvenience. We also have bird feeders, bath and houses to attract a variety of them which are constantly hunting for bugs. Thanks for such a great video 👍👍
THIS... was wonderful and so clever. I love the lifestyle and attitude that you and Stephany share. You don't take life too seriously, you clearly have fun and live life to its fullest. Thanks for the reminder to lighten up. Now, excuse me while I go skip in the garden - my skateboard was put away a long, long time ago (I'm older than you!) ❤
I love your “what I do for aphids” joke! I have nastursiums that sprout very early in the spring, bloom beautiully, then when I think they are going to last a good long time, they get black aphids on the back of the leaves. Every year, the same thing. There is nothing I am willing to do to get rid of them, so when I see the black aphids on them, I remove them. By then, they have dropped so many seeds that they always come back every year. 😊
I love your Empress of China dogwood! I planted a ‘Scarlet Fire’ kousa dogwood a little over a month ago in my front yard. Your dogwood gives me hope and inspiration, for when mine gets old enough to bloom.
I love your humor so much Jim. you taught me so much about gardening, how to be relaxed and not worrying much when plants got diseases and insects. I appreciate you so much
Thanks for this tour and the advice to just relax and let nature handle problems, and the freedom in knowing that it’s okay to remove a plant that has constant issues. 😊
I got some lovely bonus Allium from some regular onions that got tossed out in the yard. They were blooming and the bulb was just sitting on top of the soil so I dumped some last year pot soil on them! I'll take blooms wherever they happen. I noticed potatoes coming up in the compost spot too. Watching volunteers continues to educate me. If you're not having fun and serving nature, you're stressing yourself out unnecessarily IMO. Great video!
I got such a kick at your montage about playing around while you 2 were ignoring aphids on your spirea.. same with no more plants Steff antics sneaking around corners and tiptoing stealth.. the 2 of you are adorable together as you are stunning in your garden know how
I have cabbages in my backyard to attract those cabbage white butterflies to my garden. Most of the time, the caterpillars only make a few holes before they disappear. I always have lace flies in that part of my garden. Even though I am enabling said butterflies, nature has other plans.
Saw a ladybug for the first time on my contorted filbert. I figured there was a reason and sure enough there were aphids. I hope they’re good at their job!
I totally agree with your approach to dealing insect problems. Gardenias no longer live in my garden. I wanted them to cut and bring indoors to enjoy the fragrance. They seem to always have thrips so out they came. This created a new planting opportunity.
A great addition to your hose/spigot is a camper water filter(I use Glacier Fresh Model GF-36). It comes with an attachment for your spigot. It takes 98% of the chemicals out of your water. I’ve seen a huge difference. I also have rain barrels.☺️
Deer recently deadheaded my tall coneflowers. I didn’t even know we had deer until I saw one behind our fence the other day. Loved the skateboarding 🛹 clip. Great video as always!
We had a nice wet spring and I can’t believe how much that has helped grow my garden. I guess it’s technically still spring but we haven’t had any decent rain for a few weeks and you can definitely tell the difference between rain water and well water growth. 💐💚🙃 Plus the water from the well comes out so freaking cold 🥶💐💚🙃
Loved your approach to the aphids and the video made me chuckle. Nice to see the fur babies getting some playtime with you. Garden looks amazing, way ahead of mine over here, just a bit west of you.
Skateboarding! So brave. Love to see you both having some lighthearted fun instead of stressing about the aphids. One of the many things I’ve learned from you. Things happen.
Dang Bro!!! Skater??? Juggler??? I had no idea you were so multitalented! Love that!! Super fun to watch. I had aphids on my Double Play Doozie spirea.. looks like i got stressed out for no reason.
I'm envious. We had a ton of bumblebees last year, starting in early May, especially in the Mystic Spires Blue Salvia. This year so far, zero! Truly depressing.
@@JimPutnam My only concern is whether the nesting areas have been disturbed/removed since last Fall. Far too much new housing is taking place in our town. But we've seen just about everything else this Spring, including Monarch butterflies, a few hummingbird moths, and the leaf cuts from leafcutter bees in the past week.
Be sure to stick around to find out how we dealt with aphids on our Spirea😂. Thanks for watching!
.you guys are so funny! AND TALENTED! 😂
Didn't have skateboarding on my Jim Putnam Bingo Card.
Just loved seeing your funny approach to dealing with aphids! You are truly multi-talented in the athletic department! Skate boarding, juggling, lobbing balls back and forth with Steph. But best of all, was the bit with the 2 of you skipping through the garden 😂😂😂!
That was an excellent way to make a point. Life is, indeed, short; don't occupy your precious day's with unimportant competititions.
😂 Skipping, skateboarding and juggling? Ya'll are too fun 😊 The garden is looking fantastic!
I snort laughed with you and Steph skipping through the garden 😄 . And oh my gawd with the dogwood tree! Gorgeous! 🌿
The skipping! Perfection. Skateboarding and juggling too - such talent 😜 I feel the same way when other gardeners obsess about perfection and how to "fix" the garden that is a natural living thing.

Ouch, that's a very painful injury. Hope you heal well.

Hortube humor!!! I’m here for it. Definitely gets the point across:)

Oh my goodness! This is now my favorite horttube video. It was not only funny, but it was also very sweet. Thanks, Jim and Stephany!
Oh my gosh!! You could have been a circus clown with that juggling act! I just love you 2 crazy kids!
Kinda new to your channel. But your work/life balance segment was cute. Skateboarding...you got me.
Loved seeing the garden and the aphid solution! 😂

I came for the aphid solution and stayed for all the fun you two were having! 🤣🤣😂

That's good information. Thanks
Love love love your videos! This one was very special! I’ve learned so much from you, my family now calls me the “Crazy Plant Lady’!

Hahaha!!! I loved your aphid anti-intervention, especially the skipping part - made me laugh out loud.
You guys made me laff, having fun & being goofy. Relationship goals right there. Garden beautiful as usual.❤
You got some skateboarding skills my friend!😁
I was laughing so hard when you were just living your life while the aphids had a party.

Jim on a skateboard! The two of you skipping! Perfect!
I’m cracking up over here! My husband and kiddo were staring at me like I was nuts 😂

Skipping, skateboarding, and juggling, oh my!!😂😂
Thank you Jim and Stephany . 💐💚🙃
I love your Empress of China dogwood! I planted a ‘Scarlet Fire’ kousa dogwood a little over a month ago in my front yard. Your dogwood gives me hope and inspiration, for when mine gets old enough to bloom.
SkateTube with Juggle Putnam!! 😂
Oh my gosh, your Empress of China Dogwood is gorgeous! And that Raz-ma-tax, always looking for it in your garden 💚

yall are so funny. garden is beautiful. pups are happy. life is good.
I love the skipping! 😂 Point taken about the worrying.
Great way to deal with aphids!!!!😊 very funny, especially the skipping through the tulips.

Absolutely love the video and especially the family and fur doggies having fun 😊😊😊..garden looks amazing 🤩 😊
I loved the skipping through the garden, and all the other fun things y’all were doing while there were aphids!
Love how you handle problems!
Love, love the montage of you, your dog, and your wife having fun! It made me smile.
Loved the joke! Garden looks great!

I SUPER DUPER LOVE HOW YALL HANDLED THE APHIDS ❤.

Juggling Jim and skipping Stephanie 🤣
Fun Times in the NC gardens😊
I totally agree with your approach to dealing insect problems. Gardenias no longer live in my garden. I wanted them to cut and bring indoors to enjoy the fragrance. They seem to always have thrips so out they came. This created a new planting opportunity.
Multi talented and a display of fast, harsh action against those pesky aphids. Bravo bravo! 😅
Nothing was more Gen X than seeing you skateboard. You guys are awesome!
Cute the way you both skipped through the garden. And I'm impressed with you skateboarding 👍🏽
OMG that was the funniest thing ever! Love the skipping scene! Wonderful job, same approach I take with aphids.
Talk about happy and uplifting:) You and Steph put a smile on my face this morning😀
Your garden looks wonderful! I love your aphid management plan! That's such a good reminder to stop stressing and obsessing about little problems.

Lol. The skipping through the garden path is just what I needed to start off my morning. 😂
...you-n-Steph skipping krakked me uppp! 🤣 I laffed out loud. 👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
that dogwood is a beautiful tree!
Great pruning video, Jim. It is a subject I really need and I am taking baby steps in my own yard! Loved you and Steph in your carefree moments!
Have you ever considered painting your front fence white? I think it would make the plants pop more and blend more with the house.
Painting that fence has been suggested by others. They choose and prefer, not to.
Love the acrobatics and playing with the doggies! Great stuff!😊❤️
Great way to make a point about not stressing over garden pests. I now have a trigger of when I see them to go do something else. Stress averted!
How fun you two are and such a great team. Love your approach to gardening and as always learn so much. Thank you!
Deer recently deadheaded my tall coneflowers. I didn’t even know we had deer until I saw one behind our fence the other day. Loved the skateboarding 🛹 clip. Great video as always!
Skipping was so cute!
Gee. Those aphids didn't stand a chance with all the effort to get rid of them 🤣. I'm adapting this laid back approach to gardening and it really fun.
We had a nice wet spring and I can’t believe how much that has helped grow my garden. loved this video !! .. i dont think i will be able to skateboard if I was 50+
Absolutely! Nothing like ‘real’ rain!
I actually LOL’d at your joke sequence. Thanks! 😂😂😂
A jack of all trades!! Loved the video!!!
You guys are so cute to watch and what talent you have besides awesome gardening!
Oh man teasing us again with the impossible-to-obtain empress of China 😭😅
Amazing to watch how far your garden has come along, it’s gorgeous!
Now for your next trick can you juggle and skateboard at the same time 😂
Skateboarding! So brave. Love to see you both having some lighthearted fun instead of stressing about the aphids. One of the many things I’ve learned from you. Things happen.
Have been looking for that dogwood since you featured it! Hoping it is restocked online somewhere soon. Beautiful specimen and garden!
You’re too much 😂 I didn’t know you had soo many talents!
Oh that made me SMILE ! 😊💐💚🙃
Omg, I love this video. Well played, you two. 😂
Best response to aphids I've ever seen 🙌
I would love to create a lush garden like this ❤
Love the “cure” for aphids! Do I need to do all of the activities or can I be selective?😂
😅
total enjoyment always, never stop
Love the aphid tutorial and the fertilizer advice. Permission to relax and enjoy nature.
This was fantastic!! Thanks for helping us to remember to just go with the flow and enjoy the journey ❤️y’all are the best!
ok....that was funny. :-) Thanks for the giggle.
Two thumbs up if i could give it. Thanks for the laugh👍🏽
Dang Bro!!! Skater??? Juggler??? I had no idea you were so multitalented! Love that!! Super fun to watch. I had aphids on my Double Play Doozie spirea.. looks like i got stressed out for no reason.
Hilarious aphid montage.❤️😂 Loved it.
You both are extremely fit doing all that fun stuff lol! Totally enjoy this video.
