It is inconsequential who's gas it is. It's about the transit of the gas, and for that a contract between Russia and Ukraine is needed. There is no way around that fact. Ukraine had every right to annul the contract with the outbreak of the war, but was considerate enough for those countries to look for alternatives. They have only themselves to blame if they run out of gas, they have known this for 3 years already. By no means can you expect a nation which is invaded to renegotiate deals with a nation that is invading them and killing their citizens. It would be utterly inhumane to expect such a thing.
