THE ROUND KNOWS WHERE IT IS BECAUSE IT KNOWS WHERE IT ISN'T.

always interesting seeing the new tech., and thinking about the possible future technological advances and how it could effect the Canadian forces fighting capabilities.

I had heard about these, but couldn't visualize it. Cool piece of kit. Definitely less expensive and just as accurate as the Excaliber round. Pretty much going to put them out of business.

Actually the Excalibur, although being an outdated and useless piece of equipment, travels almost twice as far and is over 10 times more accurate, seems like you don't know what you're talking about.

    • @viper29ca
      @viper29ca 7 років тому +2

More accurate? The are both GPS guided, so the accuracy of each would be about the same.
Range...will give that to you, the Ex definitely our ranges it, but, is also far more expensive, and means that arty crews have to carry around specialized rounds.
This system is just a fuse replacement. So you basically sacrifice some range, for cost and versatility.
As far as being out dated and useless....hardly.

Scott Millican This "kit" is only accurate to within 50 metres according to the manufacturer, Something that the 155mm Howitzer is already capable of with unguided munitions.
The Excalibur is accurate to within 4 metres.
Meanwhile mobile rocket artillery is accurate to within 10 metres and has a range of about 300km
These $10,000 fuses are a waste of money to try and keep an antiquated weapon relevant with fancy weasel terms like "GPS guided".

Yah might want to do a little more reading on the subject, as your numbers are way off.
CEP of an unguided 155 round at max range is 276m. CEP with this fuse brings that down to 50m. Testing of the fuse put rounds with in 5m of the target, 90% of the time. As well has a fail safe, that if it knows it won't hit withing 150m of the target point, the round won't explode on impact.
Further more, trials they did in Afghanistan, they had an objective to get the CEP to 30m or less, and a majority of the rounds impacted within 10m of the target. In the final acceptance test prior to full production, they have managed to bring the accuracy down to 10m or less.
Rocket artillery is only that accurate, if it is guided. Unguided it is no better than a regular arty round, other than it has a longer range....but also a higher price tag.
Arty is still king of the battlefield. Talk to any grunt that has been in combat and they sleep better at night knowing that they have guns on call 24/7. Same can't be said for CAS or helos. Hardly antiquated.
BTW the numbers on EX are 6m, not 4, and a $10000 fuse that can be screwed into an already existing arty round, is far cheaper, and more versitile than the cost of an EX, as the only thing you are giving up is range.

Scott Millican lol you're numbers are way off. And you've got your facts wrong, but hey, if all you ever plan to do is fight goat farmers in the desert maybe your antiquated tech might just be enough ;)

still cheaper than laying 10 extra rounds to ensure effect on target, and invaluable for close fire support. and far far cheaper than its big cousin the Excalibur. even if it was 80k still worthwhile to have a few thousand of these fuses.
      but its not $80,000
PGK runs $6,500 - $10,000 a fuse, depending on what contract you look at, the M107 shell runs about $2,000/unit depending on the manufacturer, while the imported Excalibur runs over $150,000/unit.

Rae West The F35 is an abortion that won't ever survive real combat actually. But even a low tech, late cold war era Russian su-25 can effectively and at longer ranges suppress enemy air defense and engage in far more accurate bombing than any over priced low range artillery will ever do, have fun with that 15 mile range lol
