I think in this episode, they tried to show the subtle differences between BTS even as trainees compared to regular idol groups/agencies, who were pretty regimented. BTS also had rules but they had a bit more freedom than others. They could go out and about and eat with minimal oversight, they were writing their own music, they were making youtube logs with nothing really edited out.
We all know they debuted in 2013 but never forget the years they all trained for from 2010. Jimin was the last to join in 2012, so he had the shortest training period, probably one of the shortest of any idol in the industry, about 6 months I think.💜

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. So glad u started this series. Aneesa the creator of this docu series is an editor. It took her 4 yrs of research to create 20 plus chapters. Many army don't want this series to end. Aneesa has to do more research to tell the rest of BTS story. She sadly does not plan to do that no more. Aneesa is a full time editor at Disney now. She was a pro editor when she created this passion project of hers. I am glad u like her work. Sadly, she only published 21 of those. I hope she shares the others in the future if she can. For some reason it's really hard for the co-ed groups to last. KARD is 2 gals and 2 boys and is the only one that is successful all these yrs. They have great songs. U should check them out. The restaurant lady is doing fine she still alive. Army visits her place often. So we actually took care of her like she did our guys. =0] Many army go to her place when they visit Korea. Her place is like a BTS shrine. I feel SK they are more organised there. Because of the industry many kids take the risk. Here many apply but it's really hard when no one is supporting u. The restaurant lady's place is famous to army. Army visit her place and it's filled with BTS merch and pics. She makes good food. She still proud of the guys. She always believed in them and she was right. Joon was in underground like Suga meaning they were in the rap underground. They were rapping and battling. Hard core stuff. Yeah, the other companies are too focused on perfection. It's messed up. A member of Twice (9 member gal group) got into an accident and had to do rehab. She was placed on hormone pills and this made her gain a lot of weight. She got so bullied via social media it was terrible. Ppl are not kind. It's so sad and frustrating. Bang PD is such a progressive thinker. I adore him. RM learned Eng by watching the TV show Friends. RM adores Nas a USA rapper. He listens to a lot of Western rap. Jimin was the last member to join. He was with them 6-8 months. He was almost cut 8 times. Poor guy. RM, Suga, Jin and JK i think trained for 3 yrs. V trained for 2. Excited to hear your thoughts on ch.2. Also, pls watch the deleted video. It's so good. Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army💟

Kpop is not a genre actually, it's an industry because groups can choose whatever genre they want. I know you can listen to like one or two songs from a singer or group and get the gist of their sound but with BTS, their discography is so varied that you need to listen to a variety of the music to get who they are.
    Rayna said on 1/29/22
The first thing to understand is, that "K-Pop" is not really just a genre, it's more a whole industry..
As SUGA (one of the BTS members) once said:
"I’m a little careful to talk about K-pop as a genre, because I don’t want to be defining Kpop as a genre. I’m a little bit wary of that, but I think rather than approach Kpop as a genre, a better approach would be ‘integrated content.' K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.”
BTS is more than just K-Pop.

Rise of Bangtan original channel had over 100k subscribers when it was pulled. The captions say this is an army edit, and yes Aneesa is army but the concept and execution and editing is all the work of one person, Aneesa. It was a project she actually started back in 2017 and aired the first episode on UA-cam in January 2021. Each episode just gets better and better. There are also deleted scenes for episode 1 and 2 and then also bonus content starting episode 3
I’m super happy you were referred to this series because it is truly professional quality and Aneesa is a heck of a good story teller.

I found it. “But also, as Bangtan’s career continues to thrive, the more incomplete the series feels to me. I never expected it to reach so many people and, had I known it would grown so much, I might have added more explanation and clarity within the narrative. For these reasons I’ve decided that TRoB will no longer be available on this channel'.

I am excited that you are doing this series. Aneesa put a lot of work into this project. She was a kpop fan before BTS debuted. She felt it was important to put in the history and talk about the big music companies training practices. She noticed BTS because they were different.
Just a heads up on the ages. The members are giving you their Korean age. You need to subtract one or two years Most of the members were born September-December, so subtract two years. J-Hope and Suga were born in February and March respectively, so usually you can just subtract one year. Korean age is counted by years you have lived in, not by the sets of 365 days you have lived. V was born December 30 1995. That was the first year that he lived in, so he was one. Two days later, January 1st, 1996, that is the second year he lived in, so he was now two. When the boys debuted, Jin was 20 and JK was 15.

FYI, "auntie/aunt" is also an umbrella term that can reference any middle aged woman. So here, the restaurant owner is not their blood related aunt, but a middle aged woman who provides their meals. You will also see that after a certain age, you will respectfully be called grandma.

This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. (Cr: "FY" on yt)
I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company.
I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. (Cr: "Shannon" on yt)
Now plz understand this 1st & 2nd episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. (Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)

@marinal First, thank you for crediting the comments you summarized in your comments. :) (I'm the "FY" you noted above). I still keep in touch with Aneesa, who is overall doing very well in her career. The correction is that she DOESN'T work for Disney but a independent production company in Los Angeles who do jobs for major motion pictures as well as other commerical projects. She has recently worked on movies such as Past Lives 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and other amazing projects. She took the step back from completing this series for her mental health. She continues to support the guys of BTS through private and simi-public ways! She is happy that her labor of love project has helped many fans to experience BTS in a deeper way. They have so much content that it is extremely difficult to see it all in chronological order!

In the korean and kpop culture it's hard to have mixed groups. Just bc from a selling point it's harder. In kpop, groups live together for years and boy-girl living arrangements are frowned upon. Also the chance of them starting relationships/falling in love and disbanding over it etc.

@@_LVLUP_ yeah understandable. Korean culture is pretty conservative. Everyone is expected to behave in a decent manner, especially idols. For idols this also includes no dating. They live together bc they train together for 16 hours a day which gives an intense bond. But you can imagine that boy-girl living arrangements and them being so close might start romantic love, so they rarely do.
I'm from the west so I can hardly comprehend this conservative stuff, but yeah it is what it is. Imo boys can fall in love too, but that's taboo in South Korea lmao.

There are pretty much no mixed groups.
There are is a seperated by gender group - essentially 2 groups.
There are also collaborations that are mixed - by already established artists.
The first fans are also Korean where this is something to be thought about.
      The fans are young.
They want a girlgroup or a boygroup but not a mixed one.
What do you think how girls would treat a girl in a boygroup? Or a boy in a girlgroup?
There was a mixed group and the whole thing ended pretty much with bullying accusations.
In Idol music mixed groups don't work out because there is too much tension between the teen members but also part of the Idol appeal is the "aviability" of the members.
Fans don't like it when that illusion is destroyed and have heavily lobbied to get members kicked that are not. Sometimes they have succeeded.
Mixed groups don't attract enough people that like K-pop/Idol music.

Okay, since this is like school, I have to provide just a little more info that every documentary about BTS' early years leaves out. 😅
First, the BTS "project" that BangPD was putting together went through a lot of different changes before being finalized. There were actually around 30 BigHit trainees, most of whom obviously didn't make the final cut. Originally, they were supposed to be a rap/hiphop group, whose early lineup included several other rappers alongside RM and Suga (maybe Jhope too, the timeline is a bit fuzzy for me). Supreme Boi, for example, was one such trainee who decided to drop out of the group's running and stay on as a producer at BigHit. You may have heard him as a feature on Cypher 3? Yeah, he's been around since those predebut days.
At some point BangPD decided to change the group's focus from pure hiphop to be more of a traditional idol group, so the lineup changed again, and that's when JK and Jin were brought on as singers, then later V, then much later Jimin (who almost didn't make the cut). But there were other people training with them too, and it's crazy to me that everyone acts like they didn't exist. Some of them even lived in the dorm with them!
Oh, also? BTS originally had a sister group called GLAM. They were BigHit's other project, and their timeline was about a year ahead of BTS. So they debuted in 2012 while BTS were still trainees. JHope, Jimin, JK, and Suga did backup dancing for them, lol. RM wrote some songs for them. It could have been a really beautiful symbiotic relationship, having both groups at the company, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. One of the girls left GLAM after a few months, after a scandal where she was revealed to be a crazy former sasaeng, and another got caught up in a crazy extortion scandal in 2014 and went to jail. Obviously the group broke up after that.
So here you have a situation where BigHit had invested a ton of money into getting their girl group trained up and debuted, and then the whole thing fell apart before it could start making a profit. BTS, while they got some early attention with rookie awards and whatnot, weren't financially successful early on. But the pressure must have been crazy, because they were not only trying to recoup their own debut expenses, but the company also needed them (as their only active source of income) to make up GLAM's losses too. Nor fair, but it is what it is.

Regarding mixed gender groups; the Korean culture is a lot more divisive when it comes to boys and girls and gender roles, compared to western culture. I think it's not as bad now but I know in my mom's generation girls had separate classes from boys to learn 'girl things' like etiquette and cooking. Even friend groups tend to be either all female or all male. Also it's a given that every man has to serve in the military so that is another hurdle. Idol groups being as close knit as they are, I think it would be hard and even uncomfortable for boys and girls to live so close together, plus all the dating rumors and drama that would ensue. Fandoms go nuts seeing any female idol breathing the same air as a male idol and vice versa, I can't imagine the shipping wars that would happen on a mixed team lol. It would be refreshing to see it though! I think there are a couple but it's very rare.

Just a quick note. Whenever the media/journalists say kpop brings in 4 billion to Korea’’s economy, it’s BTS. Western media especially don’t like to let on that BTS has that much success/power over Western artists, so they always replace BTS’ name with “kpop” as if all of kpop groups pulled billions. No, Big Hit literally disclosed/reported that number either 2019 or 2020 and Billboard and other media/journalists will credit it as all of “kpop.” BTS has been selling out stadiums for a few years (stadiums usually seat around 40-90k), not just arenas (up to 20k ish) which was before stadiums.

12:06 I'm not sure if the boys ever got a chance to go back there, but from what I know she is still working and very proud of the boys, her restaurant is an ARMY tourism landmark, as are many other places in S. Korea where the boys first started, including the old business building where BigHit Ent. had their one office floor, the building is closed now (from what I understand, correct me if im wrong army) and the walls are covered with messages and signatures from ARMYs to BTS, you can look for pictures of "old BTS building" or something like that.
16:35 I just want to point out here that Jin grew up as the Maknae of his family, but among the BTS boys he was the oldest and it was the first time he was living far from home, so it was an adaptation process of learning to take care of himself better since he wasn't treated like the maknae anymore, and of also learning to be the hyung to all the other members, which is part of the reason why he jokes around with JK that he was the one who raised him, Jin paid for JK's food out of his own pocket many times during their early years since they didn't have a big budget.

For a young nation they're really advanced and strugglin with old fashioned ways. People of about 50 years old saw dictatorship and families parted between North K and South K.
Many of BTS' basic values are old fashioned and they systematically questions them. And themselfs as well 👏👏👏

I'm so glad to rewatch this serie with you ! It's a fan made docu serie, but for me, it's the best to discover BTS history. There are official documentaries to show them during their world tours and behind the scene, very well made too but not so informative : "Burn the Stage, Bring the Soul, Break the Silence, and now we have BTS Behind the star on Disney + . But The Rise of Bangtan is a special one, maybe more intimate ? Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) has been working on this series for over 3 years! Many ARMY really like this series (they saved it on Google when Aneesa removed it) because not only it's extremely well made but she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time
This 1st episode of ROB shows the typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, but also, how différent is BTS and Big Hit. Some hints are really subtle, and some new Army fail to noticed them : Kpop Idols are supposed to be always perfect, perfect behavior, perfect faces, no weakness, (of course not smoking, not drinking alcohol, even not eating on camera ) ... but BTS appears in their log/vlog/Bangtan episdodes or BangtanBombs/Vlive and now Weverse live: bareface, tired, sometimes angry or stressed, they have always talked about their fears, doubts and weakness. They laugh, they cry, they eat, (and sometimes, they drink... and even sleep Lol) . When it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics/ when it says idols have phone bans , you see the BTS members on their phones/when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. The série also show the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries as you will see . BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, while the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. (NB: BTS don't have weight quota, but you often see them doing a diet, before every come-back, to be thiner. It seems to be a very important standard not only for Idols, but for all Korean people, and in a lot of asian culture. )
BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. So he choose the boys for their talents and raw potential, not for their face (except Jin, none of them fit the very strict "k pop male beauty standards" , that's why anti attack them so badly for being "ugly (!) or "not a idol face", specially RM and J hope, but also Jimin who suffer from bodyshaming because he was cheeky and not thin enough, poor angel ! The most stupid and hateful comments I have ever seen. ) BH let the boys have control over music, express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. A lot of hate come from that singularity, they succeed not only without any help and support exept Army, but against the system witch try to destroy them.

The one who talked about loosing a certain weight every day?
was an extreme case. There are a few. It's a question of when and under which label and can happen to men, too.
As you can see the women around her are shocked... because it was not their experience when they trained.
Korean fans especially can be merciless.
You can live with being called fat by "fans"? If you can't you will pay attention to your weight.
Men are not excempted from that.
In fall of 2020 Suga had shoulder surgery and had to keep his shoulder resting/healing.
As a result he gained a little weight and his face became rounder. There were immidetly posts/articles about him being fat. He was well established as a musician and in the biggest idol group ever by than.
(There is also a small misstake. From what I understand Suga joined BH in fall of 2010 not in 2011.)
    Thank you for your reaction!

What I love most about this series is that the amazing lady who created it is allowing the boys to speak through their own words and experiences. Yes, each chapter will follow a narrative but the different clips she uses really pushes it forward and doesn't try to twist what is being said. It's one thing to hear it, IE: Jin being cast on the street because of his looks but then seeing a pre-debut vlog drives home how it actually DID happen this way and no one is twisting his words around because it's right there on video. I hope that makes sense? Anyway the entire series is amazing. Be prepared to laugh and cry along with everything in between. I also think it says A LOT about our amazing ARMY who went out of their way to make this kind of content for free as a way to share what's so freaking amazing about our boys along with their history told as they experienced it - even the good and bad parts.
Edit: I also wanted to point out that I do agree to a point about the guy saying for anyone who wants to play a professional sport that their training can be just as brutal. However here in the west it's a "good" thing to be seen with that kind of drive toward a professional sports goal while someone who might want to dance, regardless if it's hip-hop or Latin ballroom, might not get the same kind of positive feed back since it's dancing. It's even worse if you're a male wanting to act, dance, or something in the musical arts without having some sort of hate train for a less than masculine hobby which is total BS.

Hobi and the mask thing... Most Army don't actually like the masks... Hobi once left the group and was talked into staying by the other members... particularly RM and Yoongi... they told the agency that the group couldn't exist without him so he came back... the multiple fandom campaign to 'kick out Jhope because he was ugly' will forever be a dark point in time for Army... covering up his beautiful face was and never will be an option for us.... You spoke about the girls being smitten already with the group... these guys worked so hard, online most nights talking to fans before Army was even given a name... I say it all the time but I will forever be grateful to our KArmy orginals for standing by our guys and being instrumental in making sure they got on the TV shows so that they were seen....

It was almost like a Wiki page where I could take tidbits of info to go off and explore more from the official content and look up more stuff on my own. I found out about so many different songs and shows and MVs and things. The crazy part is that it gets better with each episode. I think they all recognised Jungkook's beautiful voice, but his problem was that he was very shy with something like stage fright.
When you saw the girl talking about weight loss that was in another company not Bighit. Although even BTS boys were harrassed about losing weight to be lean. Jimin who was really muscular still had chubby cheeks and they kept telling him he looked fat, so he barely ate anything for a while.
Did you notice that in this program concentrating on the period before their debut you never see V, nor is he ever mentioned. The management deliberately hid his existance until the debut.

It's not harder for women to lose weight. I lose weight easily and build up muscles fast. I think doing a lot of sports early on helps. (not sitting in a room knitting) But being too skinny is not the way to go. All this also messes with their hormones at an important time of development. Plus stress. Nature stops their periods. Not good! Women need resources to be able to do what they can do. Things need to flow. 💜
