- Into the Woods, the first book in the series of Tigerstar and Sasha mangas…is certainly a book. The whole series will end up being a little dry and only loosely covering the characters it claims to discuss but this first entry in particular is really only known for the unintentionally comic panels it often contains, one in particular being the famous “priceless look” on that handsome cat’s face. Seeing as I promised early on and will continue my promise to not critique the art in the mangas though, except in its practical additions to the story, we have some other matters to discuss this time around. Let’s get into this mess.

I always assumed that Tigerstar and Sasha's romance was based on mutual physical attraction, which is why Sasha ignores Tigerstar's very toxic behaviour and why Tigerstar is so interested in a non-clan cat.

It would have been very interesting if Pine’s place was taken by Pinestar, now a Kittypet. Might have given tigerstar a reason to favour her and keep her around because she’s able to tell him about and lead him to his father.
I wish warriors did more with house cats loving and missing their humans. I feel bad for Sasha in this series, she really cant get a break

What if Sasha became Tigerstar’s mate out of convenience rather than love? Like, she wanted protection from this powerful Clan leader who can provide for her, Tigerstar decides Sasha is a good “fling” (implicitly addressed as gross since he has Goldenflower), and, whoops, Sasha has Tigerstar’s kits now.
I always assumed that Tigerstar's motivation was too adult for a child's manga and that Sasha's were more desperate and lonely
I love how this is the same Tigerstar who also put into that action of demanding all half-clan cats be killed lol
Yeah I agree with the people saying the attraction was likely purely physical, Sasha has a unique coat pattern for warriors as a Siamese after all, I always figured that had a big role in it on tigerstars side
I honestly loved this series as a young teen, but now I just don’t like how it’s handled and goes off the train tracks in book 2. On a side note, I know it’s not true, but I always headcanoned Pine as Pinestar when he left thunderclan. Now I see it as an alternate AU, but why make both the kitty pet, former clan cat, named Pine and have a rogue/loner named Pine.
Pine would be really super old by then. Pinestar was born approximately sixteen years before Firestar was born, he became a kittypet about five years before he was born, and Into the Woods was co-current with A Dangerous Path, which was about a year after Firestar joined ThunderClan. There are plenty of seventeen-year-old housecats, but that's like that's like 70 years for us humans, where you're starting to feel old and might keel over, but still have some time expected of you.
I figure Sasha likes Tigerstar because she thinks he's pretty and Tigerclaw wants a young pretty cat to manipulate.

Sunny, you honestly will never know how many memories trip through time brings back to me. Around a year ago, when I was in a dark place, I'd listen to this series time and time again. I love hearing your thoughts and analysis on the warriors books, and it never gets boring

This was one of the books that got me really into warriors as more than just a cat book. I have no idea what I saw in it back then, but I think I really enjoyed the art in particular. Something about it resonated with me. And book two of this manga is still one of my favorite warriors books. It’s just so unique.
Not all relationships are perfect. Maybe Tigerstar just thought she was hot so he decided to mess around with her for awhile. Just like he did with Goldenflower, then left. It doesn’t have to be that deep. And Sasha is clearly just delusional in love with this super hot guy, not really taking the hint that he’s trash. Makes sense to me I mean Tigerstar is evil why would he be a sweet romantic guy? Sasha just… feels protected by him and finds him hot.
Plus she’s a Siamese cat one of the prettiest breeds like of course the relationship is gonna be based on looks
That’s how I saw it too, but I feel that the comics wouldn’t go down that route because this is a children’s series. It would a bit inappropriate to have a story about two cats just hooking up out of lust and for no other reason. I guess you could write around it a bit and hint at it but Warriors is not known for being subtle.
@@Moony1568 They're definitely capable of writing a story where characters explicitly want to pursue a romantic relationship with another character because that other character is gorgeous, while also avoiding the topic of lust. Kid-friendly media does it all the time (I can think of a few Disney movies), with or without a moral about not letting someone's looks blind you to their bad qualities. It works because we live in a world where prettier people do occasionally get preferential treatment (intentional or not) and little kids can't really be kept sheltered from that.
Into the Woods was my first WC book and you can imagine how confusing it all was

I can’t believe someone at Harper Collins approved this travesty of a romance comic. Why would anyone want to be mates with a monster like Tigerclaw? Why?! The dude was literally willing to kill his own apprentice, betrayed and murdered Redtail and Lionheart, and attacked an innocent kit causing BloodClan to come into existence.
Yeeeaaaaah. What a gentlemen everyone. A real Romeo. Am I right? 😏
Like, Tigerstar was very manipulative. Before his betrayal, he was well respected by his clan-mates, become deputy because Bluestar trusted him and his skills and had kits with Goldenflower.
They could show us Tigerstar manipulate Sasha and make her believe that he loved her because she was strong, so he would get the loyalty of a skillful but naive cat.
Sasha knew none of that. He manipulated her.

11:12 I have to wonder, given the other dogwhistlish racisms in some other WC content, that Sasha, being a COLORPOINT cat (ie. a Siamese with no traditional point colors) is meant to be an orientalizing figure.
Using that framing, their relationship sadly fits the *sigh* common Western literary trope of “submissive Asian women sacrifices everything for dominant Western man”. She likes him because he’s “dominant”, “successful”, “powerful” and he likes her because she’s “exotic”, “submissive”, “feminine” in the ways that female WC aren’t.
It would explain the heavy emphasis on Tigerstar’s appearance, because Western beauty standards are the best, doncha know?
It would also explain why Sasha insisted that her kits grow up in a Clan; Tigerstar Westernized and “civilized” her by mating with her and it wouldn’t be fair to the kits if they had to grow up in the savage “uncivilized” loner/kittypet world.
As an Asian who was a child reading this, this was also my first thought. It's been hanging around in the back of my mind for years.
As messed up as it sounds, i liked this manga and relationship BECAUSE of how fucked up it is. I like the idea of Tigerstar genuinely falling in love with sasha, and neither of them understanding why; it conflicts with everything Tigerstar ever claimed to believe in. Ive personally always seen Tigerstar as a hypocrite who doesnt have solid motives for what he does. And him acting ooc to me just confirms he must actually like her? why else would he keep her around? And i like the scene where he shows her ShadowClan. The idea is kinda cute, with the 'youve shown me your home, ill show you mine', but the execution is everything. His obviously abusive behaviors show how toxic the relationship is, while still having a seed of 'plausably good intentions'. i like it, but it is not executed the best.
I thought tigerstar got a life from his father??? So how is pine alive and running around in this book??
