As the world becomes more interconnected, and methods of storing and moving money evolve to improve effectiveness and reduce costs, the method by which cross-border payments are made has the opportunity to evolve as well. With increasing global commerce, where businesses are expanding through cross-border trade, cross-border payments have now reached trillions of dollars per year - with customers paying businesses across borders close to $2.8 trillion and business-to-business payments across borders surpassing $150 trillion in 2022.
Through the use of new technologies, such as distributed ledger technology and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), there is an opportunity to rethink how cross-border payments will be made in the future toward faster, cheaper, transparent, and inclusive systems.
