I played horn in the pit back in 90s (great horn parts!), and the UCONN summer production I was in was known for amazing puppetry. I would hear the horses dancing from below, but I never saw what everybody was obviously so impressed by! It was such a great show! I also played for another early 70s community theatre production in Avon CT. It was a very popular show back in the day ...... for good reason!
I remember seeing this in the theatre when it came out. With this song, everyone was smiling and crying at the same time and I think, wanting to dance with the horses. On the big screen and at full volume, that transition to 'real life' was amazing.
I remember as a kid in the seventies going cross country in the back seat of the car with my folks and this being one of two or three musicals played endlessly in the 8-track. Gotta admit I like it now.
I love this play. I saw it twice . In New York in 1968- Hal Holbrook had the lead. Then years later in Detroit- Robert Goulet had the lead. Both were magnificent.
@FuzzyMuffins2 I, like many others, didn't understand it when I was 17 years old and watching this in the theater in 1972. But I loved the music and bought the record. Now, in 2011 I'm 55, and loving it all over again!
I once saw this performed on stage, and got disappointed when the fake horses didn't become real like in the movie. In my defense, I was kind of young.
Man this makes me want to listen to the Broadway Cast again o_o I love this movie and this show will actually change your life. Trust me. I've seen it. Its brilliant.

From grades 2-8, my Spanish teacher would do a lesson about Don Quixote, so I've known the story most of my life. Later, at 15, I suprised my mother by knowing the story, even though I told it to her when I was in 2nd grade. She had read the story and was suprised that I would know it at a young age. This past summer, at 16, I was in Spain with a church group. While driving through the countryside, I took pics of the 'dragons' (windmills) to show at home. I love this story! :)
Reading the book for English class debating whether I should ask my teacher for extra credit by singing this song to the entire class. Dress as Don Quixote with (hopefully) a horse on a stick

Gratia Cynthia Porto I saw this at the Utah Opera a few days ago. It's MUCH better then just the sound track. I agree the sound track wasn't put together very good. :/

@mrsfthomas I think that the person complaining about the sound may have just been relying on the youtube version. The sound on youtube is often very poor. I have this DVD and the sound is just fine and I;m sure it was fine in the theaters in 1972. You know, 1972 was not that long along. Sound techniques were fine back then especially in big budget productions.
But the book it is based on is a famous Spanish book. The author is Spanish and if I remember correctly he wrote a lot of the book while he was in prison.
@Classicsatdusk They criticized it for not being faithful to the novel, while the Broadway critics praised the show for capturing the spirit, and not the letter, of the novel.
True. But I think that my teacher wanted us to get the entire movie and understand it completely. We have watched Disney movies in Spanish. But since none of us had even heard book, let alone the movie, he wanted to make sure we got it all. Besides, just because we are in Spanish, doesn't mean we are good at it.
@elPezcadito20 I believe that Cervantes (the playwright who is singing during this scene) was made up for Man of La Mancha and is not actually in the book Don Quixote. Sadly, I have not actually read the book, so I do not know for sure, but that is what I have read in other places.

The Don is one of my heroes--that must mean I'm a foolish idealist--but so be it.
good on you then for we have need of idealists in these bloody days
same
The world is a sick and twisted place for idealists to flourish. But without idealists, the world will only persist in that unfortunate state.
Well in the book Don Quijote was more of a dangerous lunatic that almost killed several people, so being an idealist is better tbh
I refuse to apologize for being an idealist!
RIP, Peter O'Toole... chasing windmills in the sky.
Shit, O'Toole died, oh no. Why all the good actors and singers died and now we're stuck with the shitty ones
Yodi Cods So did the guy who plays Sancho Panza; So now Don Quixote & Sancho are in heaven together. Going on Adventures.
