Well the killing off characters thing is always divisive in any story including tvd, one side of fans will say they dont want them to die and that its the hero's job to keep as many people alive and if they die they will quit the show, the otherside says good riddance to whatever character they dont like and to make the villain impactful, its hard to appeal to both sides, the writer ultimately has to choose what they think is best for the story and hope fans will follow along. Although I will say this, you giving the katherine example, yeah that one had baffled me for years why the writers went that route, I dont want to give them credit cause they dont exactly think ahead much but ill play nice here and say they had the idea of hellfire and cade the devil back in season 5 and that it was him who dragged katherine into the sky, my question is why exactly, the otherside had people like kol and mikael , the heretics, shen minm julian the vampire to name a few whom I like these characters but they had alot of sins on their conscience too, how come they didnt get sucked up by cade, the show really went out of its way to make katherine seem like she was pure evil when she actually wasnt.
