I'm doing research at my university trying to improve the animations of the lower body on avatars in VR without the need for extra trackers other than the controllers. We're using Unreal 4 and it was originally commissioned by a company that does VR experiences actually. I've noticed that VRChat does this fairly well, though, and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on where to research this type of thing or knows how VRChat does it?
The whole field is called Kinematics (something you likely know). My recommendation would be to search around the 3D modelling community, because it comes up there quite a bit. The gist is 'you know the joint constraints, so the least-painful looking position is probably the right one'. Though actually implementing that is something more akin to sorcery from my perspective.

@@MrRourk ... wait... THAT's what those double-bladed beatsaber people are using... (realization.exe) if you want to do full tracking on the SUPER cheap, it's theoretically possible with retro-reflective balls and IR cameras (this is how Mocap studios do it, as well as TrackIR) or the same but with LEDs to illuminate the balls from within. Nobody's written a mod for that AFAIK. It'd take at least two, preferably four cameras and then at all major joints.
Take a look at the new Azure Kinect from Microsoft. I believe you can Daisy chain up to 9 of them together. They recommend minimum of 3 to encircle a person. However at $349 a unit that is a little pricey.
Do you do this? I'm really curious as to the differences between one tracker and three. Cuz, if it isn't too much, I might as well get one tracker right now and save for the next two.
Not sure about others, but I put up with the jank to make my own home-made version of TrackIR using a cap, duct tape, some wood, hot-glue, airsoft (or model airplane) Li-Po battery, LEDs and resistors, and what ended up being 2 semi-functional webcams that shared the responsibility of mic and video in. OpenTrack is free and your time better be, as you might spend quite a few hours setting it up, but it was worth it. If/when I get into VR, I have more than just the motivation to make the cheapest setup work at it's full potential.

I hope they push the oculus and xbox collab and hit us with a kinect version for the rift / quest at OC6.
PLEASE Do The OCULUS Version I beg you i want full tracking and i love this channel so much.
Wow fuck you you put fortnite in your title which makes me mad but makes me want to DDOS you for weeks. So you will get DDOS
Will it work with oculus
ThrillSeeker I watched this entire video but I don’t even own VR what I’m I doing with my life 😂😂
Love the video Thrill!
I just got my vive 3.0 and I’m loving it
why am i watching this when i already have everything set up
Nobody, really nobody.
Me:
3:08 damn look at that juicy cable management. Clean af.
Dang it. I may need to get a Valve Index. I’m holding out hope that Oculus announces trackers of their own at OC6 this week though! Time will tell.
You can get a Xbox 1 very 2 Kinect on ebay that has been setup with usb 3 for $80
@@MrRourk Is the Kinect compatible with Quest or just Rist S?
@@MisterJakeC you will need a pc
@@MrRourk Yeah of course, but I mean, is it compatible with mostly any VR? (Don't mean the phone ones)
@@MisterJakeC little secret it is not the headset. It is the software. If it can be made Steam Compatible well it will work with a Steam Compatible Headset.
Speaking of Josh dub I always watch him
Me: seeing full body tracking
Also me: going to Amazon and crying about the price 😞
Do it ramen for 2 weeks was worth it
This is so helpful Tysm! I’m getting my trackers this week and this will help me so much!
why does almost everyone in vrchat have anime avatars
TheBananaTarT because more realistic looking skins are ugly as donkey dick
Like this other guy said vrchat isn’t a realistic game it’s more cartoony, and doesn’t have graphics close to realistic that would complement a realistic avatar, so people just use what looks good in the game
@LegoGuy87 I have never seen a man so correct in my life.
@@TheBananaTarT0 don't say that, there are furrys in there too.
@@xaiano794 Shit, I forgot about them aswell
Thank you so mutch for a quick and easy toturial!!, i got my legs moving now thanks to you!!
I’m genuinely curious to know if it will track EVERY body part.... asking for a friend.
If u have enough of them then perhaps
Get a tracking camera and paint reflective polka dots :)
The day I get to try this stuff will be one of the greatest days in my life.
we need a revision the trackers so there not so clunky and expensive
clunky what?
You have to understand these are hacks. The vr companies / makers do not officially support full body.
@@MrRourk ... wait... THAT's what those double-bladed beatsaber people are using... (realization.exe)
if you want to do full tracking on the SUPER cheap, it's theoretically possible with retro-reflective balls and IR cameras (this is how Mocap studios do it, as well as TrackIR) or the same but with LEDs to illuminate the balls from within.
About 2 years ago a few people did experiments with the old XBox Kinect and led color bracelets. The Kinect performance was increased for full body.
*patiently waiting for that advanced tips video*
And what’s you’re VRChat name? I’d love to do some *dancing* with you 😉😂
It's thrilll
thanks for the tutorial, enjoying my new Vive trackers
5:12 that was nearly face revel
WHY DID YOU ASK ME I ALREADY LOVE THIS GUY
fun fact you can also get just a hip tracker
Do you do this? I'm really curious as to the differences between one tracker and three. Cuz, if it isn't too much, I might as well get one tracker right now and save for the next two.
@@Messi-rw9ng With one you can only move your hips and bend down in a more natural way.
With three same as with one but you can move your feet too.
@@FinSkater17 Ah, I figured. Thanks 4 the info
@@Messi-rw9ng it does exactly what you can imagine, hip tracked and the feets follow the hips
Can be a decent option if your avatar has a tail. Sounds silly, but it's fun, and can improve upper body language fairly well.
Quick, helpful, and straightforward. Thank you so much!
"If you know what I mean" Damnnn how does one get turned on from inside VR? Legit
ThrillSeeker: So you want to be able to walk, kick, dance, or dance if you know what I mean.
Me: BOI
Great video super helpful answers a lot of questions I had, and yea I agree they are dam expensive (especially in Canada) and there is no full kit that gives you 3 trackers and everything you need in a box, you are forced to buy 2 separate things :(
The track straps sucks, waste of money - Use a wide belt + rubber bands for the hip - The ones on the feets goes in the shoelaces. Much more stable looking tracking, track straps jitter to much when moving a lot.
I don't wear shoes in with my trackers
If you got the monney for the trackers, you really shouldn't have to worry abbout those few bucks
@@Em.P14 I dont worry about the money - The track straps are just really bad.- When it comes to dancing in VRchat, the option I said is way better. Been using that myself, over the track straps that I also own the 2 years i´ve had fbt. To people that have carpet, u can put tape or something else under the shoes. That way moonwalking etc are super easy. and it looks dope, when u slide ingame (vrchat)
@@-CHILL- do u have a pic of how the belt and shoes look
perhaps try to do the same
Awesome dude, its going to help me a ton when i get full body!
Will it be possible to Vive Trackers with Base Stations to work with Oculus Rift S?
I got an oculus drift last Christmas and loved it for months.
Then it “broke”, black screened and we sadly sent it back a week ago.
Now I’m looking at Vive, I’ve wanted full body since I found it, so cool.
Gonna probably buy a vive pro and use these to set it up.
If lockdown persists after December I’ll be ready to party and get wasted in vr. Nice!
Aww darn, thought I was first for a sec.
This is super useful and clear, thanks for the guide!
People change when they get FBT... more lewd
That's very true
Awesome video. Just what i needed! You earned yourself a subscriber and a like!
I secretly am wanting this now.
I know your secret. :v
@@UnknownSquid Oh shoot. Dont tell anyone plz!
buying my first headset, we have a quest at work and I already love it
Heyy If you could and it wouldn't be too much trouble can you do a tutorial with how to use Vive Trackers/Base stations with the Rift S/Rift? I planned to go this route but don't have enough information on how. That would be super appreciated thanks!
I’m getting my index in 5 weeks. I already have the tracker 2.0’s and the trackstrap plus’s. Can’t wait.
Just a quick question. What do you use for headset?
It might be spends but I'm literally getting a pc and full body for vr at once and this vid helps so much thx
It's a old but usefully vid
Please do a follow-up video with the setup you run with Oculus
Vr chat is the game that I really want to play, But all the setup for it is too expensive. Its a good thing im satisfied with simply watching videos!
I greatly appreciate this video. I definitely want to wait for a price cut, but full body looks fun.
Also is 3 basestations needed or is it flawless with just two for full body + index?
Two basestation 2.0s work great for me
