Hi I have a 1984 Monte Carlo ss. It has a 305 motor. For some reason I have to put the timing light on 60 degrees in order to see the timing mark. Do you know why? The cars pinging really bad underload.
My friends 350 is backfiring like crazy and sometimes won't start. He sets to TDC on cylinder 1 compression stroke, and sets the distributor properly but it's backfiring like crazy. When it's run a few times the engine races up randomly. He's blocked off his vac advance to do this. I've run out of ideas. I suggested maybe his cam sprocket wasn't clocked properly or maybe his cam lobes are toast. He won't listen to me and take the front cover off to look at it. Am I wrong?
Sounds like you need to buy some starting fluid if you can get it to run and spray it around the base of the carburetor you have a leak somewhere I found out you need to sandwich the thermal gasket to have it seal properly
What was your total timing?, who cares where your initial timing is, you still dont know what happened to total timing now, could be off, you for got to turn on the a/c also. Nice try for notjing
What if the correct timing is supposed to be 4 - 6 ATDC? Do you set the dial to 0?

Your timing tab is not in the proper place.

Have you got this resolved yet ? I’m having the same issue my truck backfires like crazy at idle.
@@LuisMora1es had that problem with mine it was a wiped cam lobe
Check your plug wiring and make sure it matches proper firing order.
How do I time my small block chevy 305 when I'm all the way advanced on my distributor??? It won't start any other way.
