Thank you for all the great videos you've put out. I just started with Astro and you make the hobby so approachable and reasonable...... Especially for Mac user. Now if only I could get some clear skys here in New England :
This is great! One thing to note is that you can’t run *any* iOS/ipadOS app on Apple Silicon. The developer has to enable the ability to do so. Most do, but a few don’t. For example, last I checked, I can’t install the Disney+ app on my M1 MBP, presumably so you can’t download episodes/movies and then steal the files.
What do you mean Python doesn’t come with macOS. It does. macOS comes with Python pre-installed. However, there are a few important details to consider: Starting from macOS Monterey (macOS 12), Apple no longer includes Python 2.x. Instead, only Python 3.x is included, though the specific version may not be the latest. You can check the installed Python version by running: python3 --version The system Python might be located in /usr/bin/python3, while Homebrew’s Python will be in /opt/homebrew/bin/python3 (for Apple Silicon) or /usr/local/bin/python3 (for Intel Macs). You can set your PATH to prioritize Homebrew’s version.
Sorry if I misspoke here. What I can say with certainty is that in previous incarnations of MacOS there was a soft link between python, python2, and python3 so any command that worked previously like pip would still work when you updated to a newer version of python (e.g. I didn't have to write pip2 to use pip, and didn't have to write python2 --version to see that I had python 2.7 installed). After installing miniconda all commands work as I'd expect. You can see this in action in the video at 01:34:33 I try python --version and get command not found. I try the same command after installing miniconda at 01:36:30 and it works.
I use Windows LOL - and it serves me well because I built a machine specifically for my photoshop editing. Try that with a Mac. I do appreciate the list of software.
Why is there always some windows dude that shows up in the comment section of a Mac related video to say that windows is better because of blah blah blah when the video is not about that?

Thank you Nico. I am a windows user and even for me this is useful.
Thank you for all those valuable infos. 🙂
Nico, you are wonderful 👏
for installing conda and jre/jdk, id consider using a package manager like brew. i think jupyter can also be installed directly from brew too

Thanks for this video...
Cool nico, it’s 1 am here so I’ll get cranking tomorrow.
After downloading a file you can just double click the file name in the download list in the browser. You don’t have to open it first in the Finder.
