I get 880 WCBS in my pickup truck, in southern Ohio, I always enjoyed the great content, sorry to hear you're going away. I will now listen to 770 wabc. ESPN can kiss where the sun don't shine!
I can get it on a cheap AM/FM pocket transistor radio here in Lebanon Ohio. I use AM all the time at night and can get all kinds of signals but the news stations from far off places are the most interesting.
WTOR 770 AM from Youngstown, NY as it’s transmitter (Niagara Falls) broadcast every daytime from Sunrise to sunset but it’s studios located in Mississauga, Ontario in Canada broadcast South Asian content including religious programming in Urdu. As in order to prevent interfere with WABC 770 AM. Also WABC 770 AM reached up to Southern Ontario and Quebec in Canada.
For the last 25 years, I have listened to WCBS 880 while driving home from my employment. The signal in Toronto, Canada usually came through clearly. This news is devastating and difficult to accept.
And also WWRU 1660 AM Korean language radio from Jersey City and NYC, receives every nighttime in Southern Ontario including Niagara Falls and Quebec including Mont Tremblant
When CBS bought the Group W stations from Westinghouse in 1995, a promise was made not to drop the second news station. Listeners assumed this meant WINS. I like WINS but I never dreamed an iconic Newsradio 88 WCBS would be dropped.
Actually, it is the other way around Westinghouse's Group W bought all of CBS (former name is the Columbia Broadcasting System) and renamed it CBS Broadcasting Inc. Some stations were sold to Cumulis which mostly became Audacy. Here in Southern California, KNX • 1070 • Los Angeles • NewsRadio (formerly a CBS • O & O Station) is now also on 97.1 FM. A few years back, the Westinghouse All News Station, KFWB • 980 • Los Angeles, shared reporters with KNX until KFWB changed formats. Television City (Beverly x Fairfax) in Hollywood is no longer owned by CBS (Westinghouse) and some of its studios will be bulldozed.
AM Radio has been dying a slow death. WCBS is owned by Audacy, as is KMOX in STL, which began simulcasting on FM in 2021. An STL All-Sports station, KFNS-AM, fired all their on-air personnel in June, 2024, and shifted their programming to Fox Sports Radio.
Not that it's likely to happen, but wouldn't it be something if 1010 changed from WINS to WCBS? As long as 1010 picks up the hourly CBS Radio News, i guess it'll do. Sure gonna miss WCBS, and here's wishing 880 the best in its new life.
My grandparents used to listen to this radio station a long time ago and when I was in the Navy it was the station I listened to when I came back home even when I lived in Tampa Florida I used to get it down there now I'm in Columbus Georgia and I listen to The adyssey radio to get two of my hometown radio stations news radio 880 and 1019 wins even when I'm driving home to New York that's the first radio station I turn to and I just heard that it's going off the air on August 26th over a sports radio ESPN radio I hope people will take a petition and keep news radio 880 on the air cuz people like me like to find out what's going on in a HomeTown even though they not in their hometown to find out what's going on it's a very sad day
First of all, I do feel that New York is so diverse and unique that it really does need to all new stations even though I’ve never been to New York. Second, I didn’t know that they were combining the two stations staffing as early as 2022 They should’ve kept things separate the way they were before Just because of the way New York is and I would also like to state that 80 a.m. has a nondirectional antenna while the other station has a directional antenna and is not a clear channel station. The two station should be kept on the air like they were. People need to protest to keep the station on the air or something a.m. radio does belong in cars because that is what the emergency alert system works off of.
I am exhausted by the repeated explanations of the demise of WCBS 880 due to the fact that it's on AM and that young people don't listen to AM radio. It streams from anywhere in the world on any connected streaming device via its soon to be former, and bankrupt, owner, Audacy. It has been years since I've listened to the station on AM radio because it seamlessly travels with me everywhere via streaming including in the car. I consider the demise of this station to be a travesty and tragic because it performs such an important public service, with reach that far exceeds the AM dial. The station grossed 30 million last year so it really is a disappointment and quite heartbreaking. I pray with all my heart that they merge the best of WCBS talent with the 1010 team and replace the anchors that are either subpar or just not as strong.
Sad. I don't hear as many AM radio stations from far away as I used to. Such a shame. If you're in the woods and have no good FM signal often an AM signal is all you have to warn you of bad weather and other emergencies. Maybe it's the AM receiving equipment or the AM stations not being what they used to be. Losing a news station is no fun. But radio news isn't what it was. I remember my CBS affiliate aired World News Roundup. It used to cover news in depth until it turned into reporting on garbage. Periodically you could hear the tones for CBS news on my AM news/music station back in the Eighties. Sad to see those days go.
The one format that dominates AM radii is...talk radio. Rush, while he was here, was concerned that car manufacturers stopped installing radios with AM signals in their products in order to silence Conservative political formats. It isn't far-fetched.
This is not a surprise. In late 2022 the process to shut off WCBS 880 began when the station’s news staff was combined with that of 1010 WINS and this was done as a result of 1010 acquiring an FM signal on 92.3. The proliferation of smartphones that can read news stories and weather forecasts as well as map applications with traffic data has made the need for a station like WCBS 880 redundant.
I guess you didn’t understand Peter Haskell…880:didn’t just report the news of the hour, events that recently happened. WINS only cares about same day stories with no follow ups. WCBS held more accountability to the people in power than WINS
It still hasn’t been announced what will happen to 98.7, but they will drop ESPN radio and programming on August 31, when the 12 year licensing agreement there comes to an end. Also I believe the programming on 880 will carry over to 101.1 HD two. Maybe.
Grew up on LI NY here, have listened to both 1010 and 880 since at least the late 70s or early 80s every day, almost. In the car in particular. Sorry to see it go. I sometimes listen to Mets games on 880 in the car, so if they still broadcast stuff like that, I'll prob. give it a listen sometimes. But I"m not pleased to lose another good radio news source. And 770 is a load of right wing lies and bollocks and cranks.

I GET IT CLEAR HERE IN EASTERN,CT!
BEEN LISTENING TO THIS SINCE 1990 BOB GIBSON WAYNE DAYS
NOW WE GOT 1010 WINS NOW

Also reached up into Southern Ontario in Canada at night.

We don't need ESPN at all.
THERES GOT TO BE DOZENS OF SPORTS ON ALL AM BANDS
I MEAN REALLY
ESPN has been on 98.7 FM, Maybe it will revert back to Kiss FM.
@@drsysop, it’s funny you should mention KISS FM. I can still remember the days when KISS FM was the best place for Classic Soul and Smooth R&B. ❤

@@CivicPalosVerdesEstates Thank you. I did not know all of this and was in error. I knew Group W originally with WINS and KYW. VERY INTERESTING.

Why can't Mike Bloomberg swoop in and buy it and keep it running? It would be a nice legacy for him. People would remember him for saving it.
I listen to the station and i am 29 i guess that makes me a bit odd such a shame i grew up on this
Just what we need: Another goddamned ESPN station.
I mean who knows about 98.7 since they are dropping ESPN but still, its more important for people to have a Newsradio Station.

What a terrible decision
Younger audience don’t own a car they can barely afford a roof over their head…only a car owner would know what AM 880 is 😂
I mean, there are other ways of listening to radio.

I always loved listening while wearing my soiled DEPENDS undergarments.
Yes, sad news, even to a listener here in NC. The signal booms in here nightly.
The one format that dominates AM radii is...talk radio. Rush, while he was here, was concerned that car manufacturers stopped installing radios with AM signals in their products in order to silence Conservative political formats. It isn't far-fetched.
I HEARD THAT
I THINK TESLA DID THAT ON THEIR EV AND CYERTRUCK
The possibility isn't far fetched. But the main reason is the near complete absence of young listeners from AM radio.
His far right successors have plenty of places on TV to spout nonsense.
Terrible. 😢
Just wonder if WABC will pick up where WCBS is leaving off?
Wait... WABC Radio is still alive?
So many reporters depend on all news radio when they are in the field. It’s a fact
That’s interesting. Some home audio receivers don’t have AM anymore.
Sad 😔 to see it end 😢😢 0:58
Have to ask will audacy ditch the all news format on kyw in Philadelphia?
No stfu

ESPN is on 98.7 FM Will that go back to Kiss 98.7? WCBS 880 kHz is also on WCBS 101.1 FM HD 2 what will fill there?

*Such a shame of what's happening to radio these days.*
Vinny was a former fill-in guy at 96.3 FM WQXR
