    I will be at Barnstable station next April. Door colour - could try scanning it, then in Paint [or whatever] change the colour, print it on to a piece of thin paper and stick it on top before you put it together [and paint the edges???]. Excellent video, really enjoyed watching it. Metcalf are good, such attention to detail and cleverly thought out. Love the accent, was born in Somerset, now living in Florida.

    im just starting back into railway modelling and have found vast changes to when i was a kid.....the Metcalfe range is fantastic to what we had....really nice models.....thanks to the videos showing construction.....last kit i had was Airfix or the super quick station....which were good.....but now...yes some are involved but is that not part and parcel of the hobby.

    Nice one 👍🏻 Few tips to enhance your model. Spray with matt varnish first so you can weather it. Print scales scenes doors and you can cover your doors 👍🏻 Print roof paper and that improves the finish. And to top it all paint all the edges 🤣 But great tutorial all the same 😆

    It doesn’t look as difficult as I thought it would. Looks and sounds sturdy. The 3D windows, stairs, mouldings etc. are really nice.

    Since the mortar in the stonework is white, the ridge tiles might have similar mortar. But the tile would (normally) be one piece, so should be the same colour as the tile.
    Excellent job, nicely done and nicely demonstrated.

    I was wondering just what these kits were like and they are pretty awesome. I'm doing an N Gauge layout of Millers Dale which is from the Midland Railway era. Sadly virtually all of the stations on this line east of Buxton in Derbyshire are of different designs and Millers dale seems to be a hotch-potch of designs altogether. I think that I'm going to have to buy some of these kits and redesign it to look like the style I'm after. It may be a nightmare, or just a daunting challenge, but after watching you, I'm up for a challenge. Great videos! Take care...

      Hi, I've seen others perform good mods to Metcalfe kits using plastikard. It's not something that I'm confident enough to do though. for the most part, as standard they fit what I need. Thanks :)

    Welcome back, clothes pegs. Hope they had a nice holiday, and that you gave them enough spending money. I'd hate to think you'd hang them out to dry! 😉

      Lol. They don't get much time off with me. Especially when I have kits to build!

    Your glue bottles are essential for fine glue control. Best hint so far, by far!

    Nice one, laser cut kits are fantastic, I'm building a printable download station building that you have to cut out yourself, much trickier but If I fail, I will turn to the laser cut build.Cheers John.

    nice video informative and quite relaxing. These metcalfe kits seem to look better than the plastic hornby buildings. The only thing I found amiss in the metcalfe kit I jhave bought [worker's houses] is they dont explain how to do the windows properly as with the gloss/matt side and then two sides to the card frame bit and then does the frame bit go between the window and building or not, there are like a dozen possible combinations of these factors. I figure I'll just do it the way that looks best I think the same way you did it.

    Love the kits, but how would you mask the white strip on outer corners of building... formed when bending the card?

    I tried to add a comment to your ballasting but not do it.
    From my experience of gluing underlay and track results in noisier
    Train operation.
    In my new layout I used cork underlay which was cut 5mm wider than the track
    Which gives a small shoulder when ballasting which looks more realistic.
    Underlay is held in place when laying track with track pins, resulting in quieter train running
    because it reduces the drumming effect because of gluing.

    What width did you finish up with for the platform?

  • @tomlawton7087

    To repainted an item, how about scanning them, and the use photoshop to change one colour to another?
    You might think it's too late for this build, but you could put the door paint on top of the door (perhaps with spraymount, so it could be reversed?)

      I have thought of doing something similar Tom. I may experiment with some ideas. I'm not sure that I'll be able to get it to look as good as the original though. I guess I wont know unless I try.

      Are there any other bits of customisation that you would have wanted? Open doors? Drain pipes? Phone lines? Posters and other signage? Platform edge stripes?

    Did you think about adding lighting to the inside when you were constructing the station?

  • @tomlawton7087
    @tomlawton7087 7 років тому

    I note the floors are good for lighting, but each part of the station will only have one room per section, so waiting rooms and ticket office may not be separated. Or is this planning too far ahead?

    • @thedevonmodelrailway2386
      @thedevonmodelrailway2386  7 років тому +1

      Tom Lawton
      If I had more patience I would have decorated each room while building and would have added lights.
      I will just be added some very basic dim lighting on the ground floor.
      I think just basic lighting will be sufficient for my needs

    Little tip for the windows next time you do a build. Use thin strips of double sided tape. It’s sticks better to the plastic than glue.

    • @tomlawton7087
      @tomlawton7087 7 років тому

      Chris Dodd
      Chris, is there an easy way to prepare small strips of double-sided tape, so they aren't all stuck down, to each other, etc?
      It can be hard enough to get the backing off once, so presumably you prepare a length, but then you have trouble just waiting to happen!

    • @doddc
      @doddc 7 років тому

      Tom Lawton I Model in N Gauge and I just use a pair of scissors to cut strips without any problem

    • @tomlawton7087

      The Devon model railway
      Did you have any problems from the UHU not sticking to the plastic? And after a while, does it degrade or dry out to brittle?

    • @tomlawton7087
      @tomlawton7087 7 років тому

      Chris Dodd
      So you can cut the double-sided tape, and separate the backing without problems? You have better skills than I do. I struggle with bits sticking together (as described;) so tend not to favour d/s tape. Scissors sounds like a good start to an alternative result!

      I'm still doing it... it's just that I've packed the airbrush and spray booth (cardboard box) away so I have space for other modelling. I've paintes the roofs but had some paint bleed under the masking tape so will need to redo some of the yellow but I'll get there. Dont expect a professional job though lol

    Could the clock be a small watch? What is the visible face diameter?

    • @thedevonmodelrailway2386
      @thedevonmodelrailway2386  7 років тому

      Tom Lawton
      I think its about 20mm diameter so a watch would be a possibility if you csn find a way of making it removable for battert changing. Not sure how easy that would be.

    I get very frustrated when a video title says it is one thing, especially a tutorial about building a kit, and the presenter waffles on for 10 minutes about his layout, or the colour of his doors. In this case he had not even opened the box before turning the camera on. Not good enough. I turned it off after 14 minutes.
