I would like to say a massive thanks to everyone that has reached out to offer support, and to all the people that have donated via Patreon. It really has moved me and made a huge difference! Thanks ever so much!
Chris, your symptoms for fatigue sound like what my friend was suffering from, by accident they found out he needed B12 injections as his body rejects it through food ( one shot lasts a year ) . You will get through this! You have a lot of people listening and supporting you all around the world. Thumbs up on the video as always ! -
It's so great to see you at your best repairing retro systems Chris. I hope you're feeling better today. Remember, we're all here for you. My Amiga is a Rev 6A (brown board). I've just recapped it, as you know you don't normally have to recap a 500 but I'm glad I did as a few of the caps had started to leak, you know that fishy smell of electrolyte.
That’s my old board, i marked the CIA with a D back in 2018, yes that chip was defective. I remember i gave this board power, it gave black screen and jumped to the next board. Have a pile of Amiga boards, to fix, I skipped this one, because of the early rev. Wasn’t surr about the 1MB Chipram hack was possible on this rev. So nice to see the board repaired now, clear to see your enjoying it. Great channel and work done -Retrocengo
GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods Stefan Skotte is a dear friend of mine, we are talking Amiga all most everyday, he told me to check out the video. He got a bunch of amigas from me. Im also running a youtube retro channel, have alot of amiga project. In a new fan to your channel, subscribed😁👍🏻
How nice that you got this one figured out! I totally understand the frustration of spending hours looking at the wrong things on a board, and the right thing is right under your nose!
@ 30:55 Serial No. 039198, I have owned 032656 from new. She's in the attic and I think has the same symptoms from the last time I tested. I'll have to make up a diagrom adapter and get her down now I know where to start looking. Thanks for this video.
Another great repair video Chris, That one was tricky. Just an idea but why don't you do a live stream when you feel up to it? It will give people a chance to talk to you directly and vise visa. Might help.
@GadgetUK164 - that pin on Agnus: I believe that is pin 42 in that orientation (rev 5 and lower). Pulled low it sets the agnus to PAL. Pulled high it sets to NTSC. Folks in NTSC land where I am at will do that mod so that our 1.3 systems have PAL compatibility with euro games and demos.... if memory serves me correctly.
I took my 500 apart just to see what revision it was because of this. Its a 6a in case any one was interested ;) it was a good way to waste 10mins of the day.
Just realized @ 2:42 the Cyrstal Osc was missing while you had the machine on. Did the 68000 CPU fry? First thing I was ever taught about Amiga mobo's was to Never ever turn on an Amiga if the Crystal OSC is gone. It can be the death of a CPU instantly.
The crystal isn't located there on that PCB! If you watch further on you will see the crystal is down at the bottom! I've never seen a CPU fail due to a dead crystal, and I've come across many!
Thanks! I am on super vitamin D doses and maybe that is gradually working. My leg is still hell to walk on, and I have to stop every 20ft or so generally, but when I look back to how it was in April it has improved thanks.
@@GadgetUK164 Well thats good news, i feel for you still have issues with a herniated disc in my neck. So i have a C64 board which could be a fault like this if you want a donation.
I have a bad socket on my A2500, it has a mega chip and it would not boot. I pulled out the mega chip and from the top I lightly pulled the pins inwards, I went around a couple of times and now it boots no problem. I thought I would give it a go as it would either fix it or totally break the socket and I have replacements.
Nice work! Just wondering if you socket the ram chip on the bottom row, won't the keyboard hit it when it's back in the case? MIght be fun while still socketed to put the old faulty ram chip back in there, connect up a serial port, hit DEL and see what the ROM-Whack debugger looks like? I guess these days diagrom is more useful though.
I'm wondering how on Earth somebody managed to put the Agnus chip in the wrong way around, when there's a dot on the chip, and a giant 1 on the silkscreen. lol
@GadgetUK164 can you help this Kiwi out identifying an A500 with serial number 0000076 to see if it's legit.. lots of clues against as far as I can see but it needs your expert eye ;-)
Hey mate, I have a request to make. I apologize as it is not related to this video in particular, I saw you worked on a consolized MVS model MV1FZ before...you see, when I got mine a couple of days ago, one of these: imgur.com/a/TmOi88C SMD caps were blown. If you can, could you please give me the capacity and voltage values of one of the many caps on the board so that I can buy another one? I would really appreciate that! Also, I really dig your repairs, I just found out I wasn't subscribed, blasphemy! Keep up the amazing work and electronics repair related content ;)

Thank you, GadgetUK164, much appreciated Amiga 500 repair.

Was the Oscillator missing?
I know I sold my old A500 rev 3 many many years back and the OSC was removed at one point....

Always the best.

Since it's so easy, it looks like piggy-backing RAM might be a decent first move for many problems.
Isent there a jumper mod on these boards to get more chip ram ?
If one has an A500, would it be worth socketing the hard soldered chips or would it be a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?🤔
I'm wondering how on Earth somebody managed to put the Agnus chip in the wrong way around, when there's a dot on the chip, and a giant 1 on the silkscreen. lol
30:55 Amiga's motherboard can into paralax too ;)
14:19 B52 rock lobster
what this pen?
A soldering iron!
Looks like someone turned their Agnus because they looked at another board and thought their own chip was in wrong?
Only one thing wrong with a twisted agnus and that's an inverted agnus - a right pain in the agnus.
