Most of us are as fit as we ever need to be for our day-to-day lives. But the real test of fitness comes when you least expect it: can you outrun danger? Can you carry your own weight? Or another person's? Can you swim, climb, and jump? Can you stay calm in the face of danger? This is another interpretation of functional fitness and it's one I find really interesting.
Georges Herbert discussed the notion of being "Strong to be useful." Many of us would like to think our training would be enough in an emergency, and yet we often don't train in a way that is genuinely practical. Why be able to squat hundreds of pounds if you can't jump over a small ditch, or climb the stairs without getting out of breath?
This video presents some tests of fitness and functionality. There are as many cognitive traits listed here as there are physical, as I believe abilities such as staying calm are actually more important. I got the term "SuperLearner" from Alynna Kayslanco, by the way!
Hopefully, we'll never find ourselves in situations where these skills are necessary. But as a thought experiment, they provide a useful window into just how "useful" certain types of training might be. This can, in turn, help us to approach functional training in a meaningful way.
I'd love to know your thoughts on this guys: are there any important traits I missed? Is this something that matters to you? What do you think are the best ways to train for a crisis?
    Thanks as always, and enjoy!

Skipping is one exercise that can be useful for; activities of daily living, CV fitness, speed, endurance, agility, co-ordination, responding to every crisis from a house fire to flash flooding, all combat arts including boxing MMA wrestling, active professions like nurses cops fire fighters, close range violent encounters like gun fights & knife fights, & weight bearing joint health.

Yes, I train myself to be ready for just about everything. From fighting like being able to strike from all possible angles without readying myself or winding up or bracing to get power, sprinting on a drop of a dime, catching myself off balance, reflex training, sensitivity, low light to complete darkness, all terrain, extreme temperatures( I try), etc.

Thank you for this video, I really like the premise! I loved how diverse your categories are!
To interpersonal skills, I would also add cooperation and intimacy in addition to persuasion. Persuading strangers is a very useful ability, but if you're planning on survival in the long term, you're gonna need to be able to build trust and have people who are in your corner no matter what. No one acts alone- athletes have coaches and team-mates, soldiers have the chain of command and their unit, special operatives have their moles and their backup. Being able to work together with others and love one another is just as important for our survival as are jumping high and fighting good

Being ready for anything has always been a goal of mine for working out. Whether it be pulling a 200 pound person from a burning car or just bending over to pick something up at an awkward angle, I always strive to be the guy that can do it all. I've been working on pull ups recently which has always been my weakest point being a bigger guy. I'm now up to 30 or 40 at a time. That's BIG for me, considering for 20+ years I couldn't even do 1 rep. Thanks for the content man, good stuff!

Just got your books... I actually do or have done almost all of this stuff... No wonder you're my new favorite fitness UA-camr! Really liking the look of the routines so far... I think it's really going to help me with my number one challenge I've been facing lately, which is: how can incorporate all of this stuff to cultivate myself in the ways that are important to me, into a routine that I do consistently enough to progress with it all, instead of being into Indian clubs for a few months, parkour/QM for a few months...lately, for example, I've been getting into kung fu exercises, but slacking off on gymnast rings and other forms of strength training...while also earning a paycheck and starting a new career. Because that is a lot of stuff to juggle, and juggling priorities is the absolute hardest thing for me.

Superb content and this is for one session? 😁👍🍀 I liked the pistil squat to box jump that was ridiculously great. Few other bits too, more than a few then, but what I feel is also a good add on is constructive rest from Alexander technique and the Alexander technique itself. As the men who invented it, FM Alexander, said, "get the means whereby". This is a first class thought to being in the state you're applauding, ie be alive with spirit and the physical attributes to match, ie a warrior part excellence. Also, I feel you're very eloquent which is another quality trait of a true scholar and gentleman. I enjoyed this video very much, thanks for sharing and I hope your home is recovered from the flood. With best regards from Liverpool.
