For me, for many years it was a case of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", but actually now I have found it - Strymon Volante. I'm not advocating that particular pedal (but you know, check it out), rather than to say - try as many as you can get your hands on. For many guitar styles, delay is super important, and although delay is easy to get into, its also one of those things that can take a life time to truly master.
I use a TC Electronics Flashback mini in the fx loop. In the fx loop you should have a delay pedal with enough headroom, but you don't need stereo in the fx loop.
My favorite delay was my first. An Ibanez Delay Champ. God that thing was warm. It was lost in a studio move. That was at a time when there were 5 delay pedals on the market. Now I'm having decision overload at the infinite choices. Although I have the option of getting an old Ibanez. A lot of the tape ones look good though..........
Great video. I’m a bass player. I find different types of delay work great for different things. I like tape delay for long ambient delays with bass it helps keep it from getting too muddy and it’s just more interesting sounding, analog delay with modulation for some things. Digital delay for tapping parts and I’ll make it more subtle for soloing. I really like having a quarter note and a dotted eighth in parallel summed to mono also. Something I haven’t found many delay pedals are capable of. It a different sound then having them in series.
Thanks for these series, I learned a lot from your reverb video, and this delay video is also very helpful. Understanding my gear helps have a better grasp on them, in return better music
Excellent explanations ! ! Huge descriptions as I was waiting for in order to understand some kind of delays. For you, what is your very huge and favorite pedal delay ?!? What do you think about the UD Stomp delay from Yamaha ?!?... Phil from Dunkirk.
Have you tried any oilcan-style delays? I recently discovered the OBNE Black Fountain, the modulation it introduces is really fluid and works well in ambient flavors
I use analog and digital delays. I set them so that the longer delay times get chopped up by the shorter delay times…I’ll change’em with my toes to get some cool stuff.
Thank you, Bill! Just was wondering if you could make a video explaining how you are fiddling the knobs to get the sound you want to get? Perhaps you had done something like that (for sure = you have done it with some particular devices). Maybe some insights or discoveries you had?
@@chordsoforion Not specifically TimeLine, though it is good enough for any demo. Like if you want to get sound like this (long, short, for the lead, for layers, etc..) get Level this way, Feedback this much, Decay like this, etc. Just some "recipes" of your kitchen Bill you give more than enough info already and thank you for that again. It is always educating and inspiring. Maybe a kind of a general approach? If I have managed to make myself clear? Or like how to get the same or close effect with TimeLine and Flashback?
@@chordsoforion I never knew about Baritone guitars, what is the difference? I assume you could tune yours into EADGBE and I could tune my 'normal' guitar into your tuning....is your tuning because its a baritone, or just your preference? Thanks
Baritone guitars use heavier strings to tune lower, and have a longer neck to improve intonation at these heavier gauges. I personally have set up several different kinds of standard-scale guitars with heavy strings for baritone tuning, with success on a hollow-body archtop with Bigsby, a set-neck ESP, and a stratocaster with a vibrato. My acoustic guitars worked fingerstyle, but buzzed a lot when picked. If you're handy, you can buy baritone replacement necks for strat- and telecaster bolt-on models if you're looking for the most affordable way to own a baritone guitar. Otherwise, you have a fairly limited selection of expensive models - and if you are looking at acoustics, your only real options are eBay and custom order. All that said, baritone tuning is a unique sound that can inspire new approaches to music.
Do you ever use software plugin effects to get your sound? I gave up buying/collecting gear many years ago and was just wondering if you have any experience with plugins.
I have a digital and an analog and I use both for different things, also I have the analog before the digital. When playing something like Ain't talkin bout Love I got the digital delay right at the end of the chain, behind the reverb and modulation even, and I have it's level slightly lower than unity gain so it doesn't get in the way as much but is still very much present. For the analog I've got the level quite a bit lower than unity and I switch the timing & repeats up between short & a moderate amount and middle-ish with a few delays depending on if I use it for arpeggiated chordal work or saturated lead tones. On that last one I keep the modulation to high at all times 😏 Then there's this setting I use for ambient leads (so I can turn of the reverb because it would get in the way) where I have them ping-pong on each other. I don't have a big stereo rig so I gotta improvise right?
I am going to make a pedal called “Procrastination” as a really cool “delay” pedal!
😂😂 the repeat comes 5 mins after playing
I love it. You should make the delays sound really frantic
As someone with ADHD, my life came with one of these included! Unfortunately, it's an "always on" pedal. XD
But will you ever make it, or will you keep promising to do so?
It has a great sound, when it feels like it

same here. most inspirational pedal I've played for sure
That is poignant advice. Does one ever truly master delay?
Volante is an excellent delay.
I love the way this guy moves when he plays. There's elegance and economy there.
Without watching I already know the answer. All of them.
Correct!
Wow...my heart's all a flutter thinking about that.
My bank balance would probably degrade with repeats tho.
Awesome explanations, thank you for content sir.

*You’ve definitely got a skill at doing great demonstrations. This just cheated up a lot of my confusion about the delay pedals.*

Great video Bill. I've been playing with delay for a while but still learnt loads. Thanks
I love the tape delay on the mooer ocean machine
Fulltone Solid State Tape Echo (SSTE) direct into a Fender The Twin all tube amp is the best for me.
Thank you for explaining this brother. Wonderful ✌🏾&💜

I have the UD-Stomp and it is amazing. It would be hard to pick an absolute favorite delay, :-)

Great video! Very helpful information. Digital for me!
Can you do videos for Chorus and Reverb please?!
Thank you!

The Dunlop/MXR Echoplex is with out any doubt the best tape delay..also I like Electro Harmonix Memory Toy analog delay..

Great video man!!!!
I have a Memory Boy, a Canyon, a DIY Echobender and a Death By Audio Reverberation Machine on my board. Cant get enough delay
And the answer is.... 'ALL of them'. :-D.
Thank you!
What about vst delay in 2021?
The VST delay you want in 2021 is the Valhalla DSP Delay. So amazing…
The best delay pedal
I was just asking myself this very question!
There's a Korg SDD 3K software plugin now. I'm wondering if moving away from pedals is in my future.
Great video but im more interested in the chords you use. Are you simply using the caged system? Thanks.
He plays on a baritone guitar. The chords he plays are gonna sound a little deeper/heavier.
@@drowsynectar6173 is a baritone guitar tuned differently?
Yes - BEADF#B. And no, I don't use the CAGED system, at least not knowingly.

I loved you in Game of Thrones! Have you recorded any GOT themed songs? You could make a song called "Smuggler No More"
Aah. You are several years too late to the "Bill looks like Davos" party. 😜

Yep! ua-cam.com/video/i4uTPXmWVlc/v-deo.html
I can imagine Allan saying "That is a great question. when you find out please let me know"
😎
If I was rich, I'd have a very large house full of every bit of delay gear I could find.

The best delay ? Those I am with one more
There's only one delay - the El Cap - which can do SOS (something the Timeline cannot do).
Keeley ECCOS and EHX Grand Canyon can do it too.
Love my El Cap .. but I’m haven’t tried out a bunch .. but I find it more plush and musically useful than for example a Canyon or DD8
The Boss Gigadelay had SOS way before anybody else, 23 seconds of it.
Thank you!
