  • Removing tile is a messy job, but that doesn’t mean you have to make a mess in the home. When you remove tile from concrete the right tools will also help. In this video you can see our dust control method. We are proud to serve Columbia MO and the Mid-Missouri area.
First, we basically build a plastic bubble around anything we don’t want to get dirty. This means plastic walls at large openings, over windows from room to room and especially around cabinets. We also place plastic sheets over furniture in the adjacent room as well. Tile dust is no joke, it gets everywhere.
A HEPA air scrubber greatly improves the dust control as well. The scrubber sucks the airborne dust out of the room making it much easier to work. You can see the little dust clouds popping up around the tools and they quickly disappear. The scrubber really works.
Once all the tile is chipped off the concrete the next step is removing the mortar residue. For this we use a grinder (5”) connected to a HEPA dust extractor (heavy duty shop vac). This is the best tool. Grinding concrete without this type of equipment is just about impossible. The cloud of dust kicked up is amazing and it only takes a couple seconds. With the dust extractor connected to the grinder there’s practically no airborne dust at all. What dust is kicked up is handled pretty quickly by the air scrubber.
Once a sweep with a broom and dust pan is complete we will carefully remove the plastic. The static helps hold the dust to the plastic but if you’re too rough it will kick up a dust cloud again. Slowly fold the plastic onto itself and there won’t be a problem.
We finish removing the plastic off the furniture, give everything another pass with a damp cloth and we’re done. Overall the homeowner is very satisfied with the cleanliness of the job (as are we) and the concrete is ready for the next floor covering to be installed.
If you’re needing a tile floor removed, ask how the contractor will handle the mess. There’s a lot of mess to control and plastic sheets alone is likely not enough. We serve Columbia Missouri and the Mid-Missouri area (Ashland, Centralia, Hallsville, Moberly, Mexico, Harrisburg, Jefferson City), we’d be happy to interview for your project.

How important is having a clean home to you? Would you hire a contractor without a plan to keep your home clean?

Funny how guys think about hearing protection and completely ignore what they're breathing in. Let me see, when was the last time you heard about someone dying of ear cancer? MASK UP FOOLS!

I don't understand why the workers were not wearing proper masks?! I understand all the other equipment to protect the home, but what about their lungs---- silica dust!

The air scrubber changes the air enough to keep silica dust below required masking requirements.

Grayson Abercrombie drywall dust will go everywhere if you’re not careful. The best advice I can offer is to replace the wall board if you haven’t already as that will help prevent more dust from entering the home. Once the new wall board is in place a slightly damp rag will help collect the dust and not continue to spread it around. I hope this helps, good luck with your project.

Come on guys, all that money and effort spent on air filters and dust collection, but you couldn’t spend $20 to protect your lungs? Wear masks!

All this equipment changes the air enough that it isn’t uncomfortable to be maskless in it.

@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy It takes a while for those vacuums to filter out the air. During that time you are inhaling toxic chemicals. Good work but be safe. Best wishes guys!

The air scrubber keeps the dust down without a mask or respirator.
