The first book my husband bought me when were dating was “Cotton Candy in a Rainy Day” By Nikki Giovanni. He just surprised me with “Make Me Rain” last week for my birthday. I will keep and treasure them forever.
I met Nikki G. when she was a community worker in Wilmington, Delaware. I was a newly trained Philly social worker who helped plan the first National Conference of Black Social Workers . It was held in Phila in the late sixties. Even then she was already well known for her poetry! She was “revolutionary“ , dynamic, inspiring, charismatic, and devoted to the cause! I continue to be a fan. I felt blessed to be able to introduce my children to her and her work several years later when they were pre-teens and admirers of Angela Davis.

Listening to this interview, I realize that Trump's and the Republican's recent behaviors have a different meaning for older black people. Sometimes we tend to forget that it haven't even been 50 years since black people weren't allowed to walk the streets or enter the front doors of an establishment. When was America so GREAT for minorities? So Great that we sit wish to make it GREAT AGAIN?!
Right my mom was 12 when schools were integrated. My aunt is 4 years younger than my mom. She remembers being traumatized having to go to school with White kids who she felt didn't want her there. They are 70 and 66 now. In the late 70s my cousin played basketball for University of Maryland and when they played in the south there were places the team couldn't go bc of her. It was just recently made a law that we couldn't be discriminated for our hair. This racist crap brought to the surface should mean something to all poc.

As a young women her poetry helped me express my passion, my hope, and my regret. And as a writer now on the other side of 50, her poetry is like a photo album of my life. It's a treat hearing from an Elders perspective we must seek understanding, innerstanding not agreement on everything they may say. The ink of a scholar is worth a thousand times more , than the blood of a martyr I feel like that quote holds true. As long as I've been aware words are indeed sword, the power of music, poetry, speech have the power to shift entire mindsets. Clearly were still trying to figure out a recipe between Garvey , Ms Giovanni, Granville T Woods and many other prolific Original Women and Men...I think if we pull a lil bit from each we may figure out a proper solution. I nursed my children, was a Marine Corps wife went to school at night, online and weekends. When I went back to work I used the crockpot to feed my family healthy homemade foods. They’re so healthy now and it offset the toxins in the earth.
Immigrants aren’t just taking the “dirty jobs” they’re also being paid less for union construction jobs in black areas that used to go black men. Don’t tell me black men don’t want good paying union jobs in construction, plumbing or as an electrician.
🎯 Facts. I live in Chicago and an Union Electrician. They are definitely taking Union jobs, even if they're not qualified. Unfortunately Chicago is a sanctuary city😔.

I had the pleasure of meeting Nikki Giovanni when she came to speak to our school in 2012 in NC at ECU. I have been adamant in following her impact since then and I still love her to this day. Such a blessing to our world!
