Ditto! This is helping me so much! I have a great dog but she just barks at some people and not others and I don’t know why. She’s great with other dogs but I now know to correct her when it comes to the humans. She doesn’t stop barking until they pet her, which is weird bcs I don’t think she realizes how scary she sounds and how barking doesn’t make people trust to pet her, even though that’s what she wants. It’s friendly barking but it’s annoying. These videos are really helping me.
The most helpful thing I learned from this video was to "stop talking" (i.e. not necessary to say heel) until behavior is learned. So simple but it makes a lot of sense!
Your one of the only transparent trainers I've seen on UA-cam. I love the video breakdowns. Helps us understand our 11month old gsd female even more. She is highly leash reactive only to other dogs and has now become aggressive at the dog park. Hoping these videos will help her overcome these obstacles. Thankyou for your content.
Joel have great talent to train dogs without a doubt but also to teach people and The way he is breaking down all steps that owner can understand is incredible…also breaking down Dogs behavior is awesome ,Thanks Joel for your videos ,it is a big help !
I adopted a 5 month old coonhound with absolutely no manners, in January 2021. Walking the 3 to 5 miles a day with her was to the point of tears dreadful. She will be 1 on the 23rd and thanks to finding your Channel about a month ago, my son can walk her now too!!! Your FANTASTIC!! Thank you
This is exactly what I am dealing with in my 8 month old dog. Thanks for making this video because I haven’t seen any addressing the desensitization process to people or dogs getting closer to us in general out there. Probably will watch this 10x today. I am studying this meticulously and determined to changing my dog from dominating my ability to socialize with others on my walk.
As someone who is so excited about this topic, I love hearing people educating themselves properly on their dogs and training info. A great trainer as well is Victoria Stilwell, she covers a lot of things other trainers don't, like at home problems. She does house training and out of house training. She is associated with the channel "It's me or the dog" and "E how pets". Hope I helped add some trusted sources to your list!
Thank you so much for this video. I am looking forward to practicing these methods with my dog. I liked that we were able to see him progress through different scenarios and that you let us in on the conversation that you were having with the owner. I realized that since my dog does need to see me giving the cues that the people/dogs are ok. I really watched how you handled the leash lessons so I can try it out.
You deserve more subscribers and views. This was an incredibly helpful video. I've a very stubborn dog who likes to test limits and a closet full of training tools. After watching a lot of training videos and trying various methods this is the only thing that with such a simple trick made me be able to walk my dog with any speed, even jogging and past other dogs outside without her pulling to the side, ahead, lunging from reactivity issues or anything else, with just 2 corrections at the start of the walk. It's been a while since it was that nice to go out on a walk with also a significantly more relaxed dog that was now actually paying attention to where she was walking and where I was going. And I can't stress this enough, I have a dog who since a puppy has always wanted to be first. No matter what she could not handle walking next to others or behind or she'd put up a show that would go on for hours.
I've watched a few of your loose leash walking vids and I think this is one of the very best. You do a very good job of explaining to the client what you are doing, why, and how to do it. I'm using this method with my 11-month old border heeler and I'm seeing great results.
These videos are so helpful. I have a female pitty. She’s very hard headed at times. I’ve been strict with her since the beginning and I yell when bad behavior happens. I pull her. But I’ve always been told I’m an asshole. But watching your videos have given me confidence on how I have been training my dog. Also you’ve given me many tips with walking. Just have to stay doing what I do. She’s a year now and there’s a huge difference since I first started to train her
I have spent £100's on several positive trainers in the last year on my 2 year old flatcoated retriever who lunges at every dog she sees wanting to play and gets so hyper. Since 6 months old she's had to go on a longline otherwise she would go into the distance to play with another dog. The last trainer wanted to put her in a halti and a harness and use a clicker. She is not food or toy motivated. Have been using your method for about a week , starting with no distractions and getting loose leash walking. The effect has been amazing. She is bonding with me more and even left her dinner half way through to follow me down the garden yesterday! Thank you!! Shame you are not in England 😔
I love Prince's reactions, " I don't like what you are doing, so I'm not going to play or interact with you..." My dog does that with puppies, but still needs a bit more training to handle barking dogs." Thanks!
Wow! Thie episode relates so much to me in every sense she does all the bad behavior the owner described here. She is so protective of me that no dog can come near me or I can not pet any other dog when sh eis off leash playing in the park. She acts the same exact way on the walk. I am already trying the sit/stay at the door but I need to implement the loose leash walking. I will also try the advice about when guests are over because she barks her head off when someone comes over. Great video!
Happy New YearJoel. I watched your video yesterday on protecting my dog from New Year's fireworks. Last night when fire works began around 7:00 she went into total panic mode, like she had last year. It wasn't over till 12:30 when it all stopped that she began to all down. I regularly take my dogs for walks, but upon your recommendation yesterday I took them out at 8:00. Didn't help at all. She's a 10 year old Boxer, very loving and obedient, but couldn't get her home quickly enough.- - Could you please do another video on fear of loud noises? She broke my heart last night! (P.S.- I love your videos. Thanks so much!)
Awesome video :) learned so much and it validates my dog training to my clients:) on the side note is like to know what kind of harness the dog was using ?
Chip seems to be a quick learner and definitely needs a pack leader to show him what to do and what is acceptable. Beautiful dog, and looks like he's on the right track now.
Would you recommend this same type of leash correction on a gentle leader (versus a front clipped harness) or would the force of it hurt the dog? Mine (65lbs) has the same type of reactivity when walking in public but strangely only sometimes. Sometimes it's calm and uneventful and other times the reaction is just like Chip at 10:38. Thanks!
I noticed that when she took the leash back after you~ her pace was much faster, almost 'nervous walking' that was curing the dog. He was great to keep pace next to her. I now see clear direction is of utmost importance, first and foremost!
This is great, totally what my dog does although he doesn't seem to desensitize. I had our daughter visit recently and my dog hadn't met her. Took about an hour before the dog would settle down. Any way to speed that process up? Things to look for as signs to back off or push on further?
Beckman’s Dog Training. You have a controlled setting in your videos where the other dogs are good. Can you do a video walking a reactive dog where the other dogs are reactive?
Wow your method of helping them looks simple but effective. Amazing works! I am wondering that when is the good time to do those leash popping correction to dog. Will it be okay to correct them when they are puppy?
Rescued a dog last week and he's 5. He is super nervy and dog aggressive. I will try these tips and see how it goes. I have to put a muzzle on our walks as he can't be trusted with other dogs. UK here or I would be at your door for training with him. 👍
Love your style, starting to see some results on my pup who is very reactive to dogs, but nothing else. Any advice for dogs that are reactive when a leash correction can't be made? For example in the house near windows, in the car, through a fence, etc.
Yes I’ve got a good method for that, I call it the “I see it, I see it” method. I’ll make a video about it soon, it’s to complex to write about in here. You can also sign up for a zoom session on my website and we can can go over it then
I'm new here and getting good tips!! We've a 4y old female boxer. She's very sweet and obedient but she's afraid of man talking loud and some loud noises when walking ( she's not afraid when at home, just outside). Do you have some suggestion? How could i desensitive her at streets?
I think Prince felt that he needed to test the dog what the dog would do if he goes to mom and get pet. Usually you guys would ask him to go and hold him to get pet but this time no, it was basically his choice to do so he felt the need to that and that was actually a trigger for the dog. Ptince is truly a helper dog.
great video; dogs respond to their owner's energy level and we can see in this vid that the woman needs to be more confident and assertive with her dog.
What is a good age for a dog to expect them to respond better to leash walking. I have a 6 month gsp who pulls so I'm constantly correcting every 30 seconds or minute and I just wonder if she's too young or if she should be learning to walk calmly by now
Love your training videos. When I leash correct my border collie as you demonstrate, she lays down and flattens on the sidewalk or rolls over on back so she doesn’t have to walk. Suggestion?????
hi! what about when your reactive dog is getting along better with other dogs but when they run play with another dog your dog suddenly wants to control the other dog (run to him and growl and kind of nips at the other dog), should you say hey! and grab him by his collar until he calms?
Need your help sir!!! Everytime my dog sees another animal ( especially if they're very close or moving fast) my goes ballistic, he barks until the animal is out of sight , hair at back of his neck stands up , he pants and then he pees . Is this kind of insecurity or aggression ???
I’m no expert. But I would do what he did in the video. Pull your dog hard and keep walking. It takes time. With things like that you may not see a instant change because having another dog walk by doesn’t happens often. Compared to pulling.
Hi, really enjoying the work you do, very informative but what can you do when a dog does not react to treats, I can't seem to find a treat that my dog likes. I know you don't treat all the time. Any ideas, what type of treats do you use. Thanks.
Some dogs are not food driven, instead they crave attention. Tell them they're a good boy/girl, pet them. Most dogs grow out of the treat phase as they get older, or it becomes secondary, so just show approval when they do what you want them to do, and be consistent.
What is the answer to her question about having multiple walkers that do it differently? How do you get the dog to walk next to you rather than ahead of you? How do you go back into the house?
These videos are great when you mute them. I always think such trainer demonstrations make changing dog behaviour look easier than it is. Dogs seem to respond more immediately to authoritative strangers than to the people they live with 24/7.
great content. as usual this dog owner is clueless and just stands there and lets this dog be a nuisance. i thank god for good trainers like this. no dog is broken only their owners are just usually ignorant.
Wow this dog not only looks almost exactly like mine, but she acts almost exactly the same too! The only thing is she starts whining when we see other dogs approaching or in the distance (usually starting around 50ft away). I wonder what your opinion is on the whining? because I can see the anxiety building in her the longer I let her whine. Do I give a correction? Just ignore it? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I've been loving your videos!
I just found your whining video you posted about a year ago. So answering my question a bit there’s no correction appropriate for whining because my dog can’t control it, instead I need to change the emotion behind everything going on. So maybe once I let her greet more dogs and she get more comfortable with them she will whine less and I just need to be patient with the whining?
We just got a young rescue dog, do you have a recommendation for a reliable front clip harnesses? He’s a 20lb schnauzer mix and is very reactive. I think this technique might work really well for him.
My puppy likes to lay down in the grass! Tonight she grabbed her leash so I took her for walk. I don’t know how to get her to come over yet. It’s because I need to get a new training leash like yours. 😎🐶🌺🦋
The dog won’t fear you unless you hurt them. This doesn’t hurt them at all. This is just getting their attention back on you because you’re the “boss.” It’s like being a mamma bear in the wild. You gotta be strict with your pup so it doesn’t run off and get hurt
It is just a puppy. My 2 year old Aussie that I adopted 2 months ago is crazy stubborn. A simple pulling back toward you won't do it. She will chase after anything and continue to bark and pull.
He recommends doing it over and over again and over again, all day, everyday, until you see changes. Try it!!! You have to be more stubborn than your Aussie.
I would like to see owners get corrected when they say things like, "There's hope for [dog's name]!", when clearly it's the owners who don't know how to properly train their particular dog out don't have the energy to match their dog.
I tried the big sideways pops to correct/refocus off of targeting/attacking other dogs. My wrist got sore with no real payoff. I went to e collar as lower conflict for me, of course with the slow learning curve first so it's not about pain, it's about getting thru her white noise. But these walks are no fun. sigh.
Good work, when you want make your dog unsecured🤷♂️. Look the dog, when he want go the second time out from the Büro. 🚫Kick ore Punch him in the same moment😱? And you have the same effect🤷♂️. Cesar M. Do for long Time the same shit. And World wide became he an shitstorme😜. These old Methods are not good for anything. In Europe was you verry fast a Animal Abuser whit his Technique. And do this 6 Month. As us a normal dog, a complete unsecure dog, ore more. 😠🇦🇹😠
Your just taking them out of their one track mind ! He is teaching him how the pack behaves is what I see . Your in charge of your pack . Or a natural alpha will assume the position I’m assuming.
There is something unpleasant about the correction, or it wouldn't be effective in discouraging the behaviour. If it wasn't uncomfortable or punishing, he would keep doing it. To me it's just not fair to say that a prong collar or e-collar is so much more painful or scrambles the dogs brains as a blanket statement when those were some pretty forceful pulls on the harness. Depending upon how much pressure you apply on the prong or e-collar, both could be less forceful than what is shown here if you wanted them to be. The pull on the harness doesn't bother me, because obviously the dog is learning, but I just don't think your remarks about the prong and e-collar are fair. :/ I've seen so many trainers use them both in a thoughtful way that is no harsher than what you've shown with the harness.
One thing to consider with prong or e collar is that there is an additional sensation on the skin that can add excitement to the correction whereas the gentler leader is just a strap that doesn't actually dig into your skin, it kind of just redirects the dog. I have used all methods though and really enjoy the regular collar/gentle leader approach. Especially with aggression.
You are getting some information for free. These two people are keeping each other safe from covid. So now they have to believe in your decisions about health?
I guess your so under qualified for this job that you missed all the extremely high stress behaviours such as ears pinned back, tail tucked, lip licking, yawning, flinching at you, panting, looking around rapidly and not taking treats. Also, I noticed throughout several videos of yours that your doberman shivers in your presence. Edit: Also, jerking a dog on a chest lead harness is almost certain to cause arthritis in the dog shoulders and/or elbows in later life.
It's hilarious that you spend all your time trying to explain to people that if you want a dog to listen to you, you have to be calm, consistent, confident and assertive. That really is 90% of it. That is not going to be easy for a lot of people, especially women.
Wow, really? Women? Calm, consistent, confident, and assertive is not exclusive to men, especially these days. Agreed that those traits in humans can solve 90% of issues with dogs but I know plenty of idiot dog owners of both genders. People who let their dogs walk out in front of them, bark at other dogs, pull constantly, jump, etc. It is not just women who struggle.
@@gailking9355 I disagree, I think it has everything to do with gender. It's ok to generalise. Men are not the same as women and I have every right to my opinion, as do you. Have a great day 🙂
Oh man. I just discovered you on UA-cam a few days ago and I am loving your content. You’re a real one.
This.
Ditto! This is helping me so much! I have a great dog but she just barks at some people and not others and I don’t know why. She’s great with other dogs but I now know to correct her when it comes to the humans. Thanks for the nice words. I offer private zoom sessions if you need any additional help. Good luck.
I work with dogs and like this trainer too. One of the best in my opinion that I’ve seen on UA-cam.
Joel have great talent to train dogs without a doubt but also to teach people and The way he is breaking down all steps that owner can understand is incredible…also breaking down Dogs behavior is awesome ,Thanks Joel for your videos ,it is a big help !

10:20 you can see even prince is weary of him he knows there's something up with his energy even if the other dog seemed calm.
Yep
Thank you so much. You are awesome 👏🏾 !!!!
Awesome, this is the real deal. Thank you!

This is a good point! Thanks for bringing this up, that would help for sure.
Seems like a good dog and catches on quickly. Could even see the anticipation in his movements, Prince seemed to pick up neg vibes from Chip

We just got a young rescue dog, do you have a recommendation for a reliable front clip harnesses? He’s a 20lb schnauzer mix and is very reactive. I think this technique might work really well for him.
I generally recommend Gentle Leaders, but if you want a front clip harness the Easy Walk harness is good. Good luck
@@BDTraining I will look into the gentle leader! Thanks for replying :)
My puppy likes to lay down in the grass! Tonight she grabbed her leash so I took her for walk. I don’t know how to get her to come over yet. It’s because I need to get a new training leash like yours. 😎🐶🌺🦋
Can you please tell me where you are located
How do you desensitize a dog so it doesn’t fence fight with another dog. It would be great to be outside and not worry if the dog next door is out
Does this lead the dog to fear you, and so listen to you. Could someone explain..as obviously I don't want this.
The dog won’t fear you unless you hurt them. This doesn’t hurt them at all. This is just getting their attention back on you because you’re the “boss.” It’s like being a mamma bear in the wild. You gotta be strict with your pup so it doesn’t run off and get hurt
@@millermayonnaise227 okkk
Where are you located?? For training.
Southern California
What is that collar ? leader ?
Easy Walk harness
It is just a puppy. My 2 year old Aussie that I adopted 2 months ago is crazy stubborn. A simple pulling back toward you won't do it. She will chase after anything and continue to bark and pull.
He recommends doing it over and over again and over again, all day, everyday, until you see changes. Try it!!! You have to be more stubborn than your Aussie.
Well, the first step of it is making sure she doesn't fly out the door first.
cant hear it very well
Should I side submit my dog if he barks at other dogs or growls?
There’s almost no reason to side submit your dog.
@@BDTraining even when your dog is being aggressive?
I hope we never have to wear masks especially outside, can’t really hear the conversation and especially since they didn’t stop the spread 🤷♀️
I think she needs some training on how to walk relaxed my god.
Yeah, her energy and gate needs some adjusting I think.
Good video
But there was not kovid.
It was a scam
The sour susan acly bubble because begonia reportedly gaze inside a curious open. mature, envious protest
Cant understand the muffled talking through silly mask, really?
You are getting some information for free. These two people are keeping each other safe from covid. So now they have to believe in your decisions about health?
I guess your so under qualified for this job that you missed all the extremely high stress behaviours such as ears pinned back, tail tucked, lip licking, yawning, flinching at you, panting, looking around rapidly and not taking treats. Also, I noticed throughout several videos of yours that your doberman shivers in your presence.
Edit: Also, jerking a dog on a chest lead harness is almost certain to cause arthritis in the dog shoulders and/or elbows in later life.
Just curious, are you a dog trainer?
@@BDTraining No, its just someoneontheinternet lol
100% I agree with you, his own dog looked scared of him
Btw, yes, I am a dog trainer lol 3 weeks late but oh well 😂
@@jodiehampson4505 Cool, when are you going to post videos of you working with a aggressive or reactive dog?
This is terrible😂
I hope she didn’t pay a lot for this.
Specifically what would you have liked to see done differently? Or if you’re a dog trainer what would you have done differently?
Really inappropriate. Has nothing to do with gender of owner.
@@gailking9355 I disagree, I think it has everything to do with gender. It's ok to generalise. Men are not the same as women and I have every right to my opinion, as do you. Have a great day 🙂
