Honestly, I couldn't believe you did an album for a first listen, AND that it was EX'act! As many have said, this album is definitely a polarizing one. I was not a fan at first, and it still isn't my FAVORITE, but they all definitely grew on me, especially after watching them perform these songs live. There are 2 things that SM are best known for: 1. Powerhouse vocals. Every group/soloist are heavy hitter vocalists; 2. Experimentation. Pushing the envelope. They don't repeat concepts, and they are always innovating and experimenting with songs, beats, visuals, styling, etc. EXO is a prime example of that, and EX'ACT is definitely experimental. They have other more easily digestible albums, especially upon first listen. Please give them another listen, I am sure they will be able to suck you in with one of the albums/songs/MVs.
Yes, the live stages changed my mind. Those songs grew on me as well! Especially Artificial Love! I can say I don't like that song at first. But I found myself recently playing that on loop! I don't know what's wrong with me. 🤭🤦♀️
Thanks for the Exo reaction! The Ex’act album is one of their most experimental albums and it is actually one of my top favorites from Exo! I’ve seen so many mixed reactions especially within the fandom, there are those who love it from the first listen, some grow to love it overtime and for others it simply isn’t their cup of tea and that’s completely fine! Music is totally subjective thing.if it doesnt click you right no matter good it is . It just dont work for you. But when EXO happened to me i realized the power of vocals. There are exo songs that i just dont like but i can not bring myself to skip because of their vocals they make sure to grab the attention.anyways i hope you will give exo another chance. I loved your month of Shinee and now your look into Exo - my two favorite groups! All the members of Exo can sing, even the rappers have beautiful voices so if you’re here for gorgeous vocals keep checking them out, definitely recommend live videos! This group, being also from SM, is super good friends with Shinee. Jonghyun helped vocally train Baekhyun and Chen and Taemin and Kai are one of THE iconic best friends in kpop, so many cute compilations of them!
Finished the video and wanted to add that yes exo definitely has a lot of experimental sounds and Ex’act is definitely one of those. I’d recommend checking out Obsession and The War, both still have their experimental moments but they may be more your vibe? Or even Don’t mess up my tempo!

Uhhhh you're blowing my mind with the experimental comments. I grew up listening to music like Cloud 9. Especially with Dem Jointz as the producer. I'm kind of shocked with you born in the 90s that you're saying some of these songs sound experimental when me and my friends feel nostalgic hearing them. IMO, EX'ACT is a visual album, you'll understand once you watch the live performances of all the songs, they're on another level. The performances make those songs better, believe me. Hope for more EXO reactions, ty for this ♥

You're missing out on their live stages. If you've watched just 1 of their live performances, i tell you there's no turning back. I recommend their live performance of 'El Dorado' & 'Drop That.'
Ooh I see where you are coming from exact for me is more of a grower I was also lukewarm to it the first time I listened to it like you mentioned in the reaction some of these songs are stuff you haven't really heard before. For me it took me like 3 listens to properly get into the album because you don't really know where the song is actually going but once you figure that out after a few listens that's when the production starts to sound more interesting you will pick up on something new every listen which is what makes the album more dynamic tbh this is a really good production for something released in 2016 it's like a breath of fresh air when you listen to albums from then. Maybe this is not an album for you it's okay exo had a huge discograpy that you have barely scratched the surface to. Production wise check out some of their more recent comebacks my favorite is obsession and don't mess up my tempo/ love shot album pls use the oohmaya channel for exo lyric videos. Exo has and still is experimental so that is something that is consistent through their albums .
While I think Monster is definitely one of their stronger and iconic title tracks, I've honestly enjoyed the B-sides more of any other album they've had including the repackage for this one. But each album has their own color so who knows if you'd like them. I like EXO Love Shot 5th Repackaged Album (2018) and OBSESSION (2019). The title tracks on aren't my favorite but the B-sides could honestly stand on their own. Their older albums are good too but for new fans, the structure may feel dated. It's also good to note a lot of their B-sides are structured for performances like their concerts. Sometimes the songs are cut short or remix to be longer.
Your Obsession album first listen was recommended to me but I thought I'd watch this first because it's your intro to EXO. I kind of understand what you're saying with some of the songs not having enough variation and peaks and valleys, but very much so with first listens of their songs and somewhat older stuff in particular. I think besides it becoming more of an SM staple, it has also become a lot more common in kpop for there to be much bigger switch ups within a song. I've had the experience of listening to their songs for the first time and liking them or loving them but like you say not seeming to have much variation. But I almost think that helps the song to a degree- again, in my experience and, well, with my taste. Other kpop songs that have a lot of changes and moments (especially by other groups and non-SM groups to me) on repeat listens, personally, I end up skipping around to those moments and not being as into the song overall. And eventually I'm not even interested in playing the song because I just want to hear one cool part that I quickly get over or my intrigued reaction plateaus. Which is such a different experience to re-listening to EXO songs, where I recognize/hear more sounds and layers, and love and appreciate the songs even more. And it's just nice to have albums to like reliably listen to- I can just press play, listen all the way through, just chill or do other things, and still enjoy listening, but not go back to skip around or change what's playing a bunch of times. I'm not sure if I've worded and explained this well but even with EXO being my favorite group and thinking they have one of the best discographies in kpop, I still understood what you were saying with this first listen and intro to them as a group. Though, when I say "EXO" and "discography" I'm thinking about *everything* EXO related- as a group, subunits, solos, collaborations, SuperM, etc. There is a lot to explore from them so I don't think fans/viewers nor you should be discouraged. I mean, obviously you've already checked out another album so I'm going to go back to the Obsession reaction after I'm done typing here, lol. So, yeah EXO is my ult group, Chanyeol is my ult bias, but Baekhyun is also a bias for me in the group. He is my favorite vocalist period and his solo stuff is what I listen to the most from all their solo work. There are probably other comments here saying this but there _is_ a repackage of this album with a few more songs. Also, I think you're so funny dancing along to the songs while you're listening :D
I'm so happy you've finally gotten to exo! I think you'll understand artificial love and white noise better if you watch the live stages of those songs. I also think you'll really enjoy exo's album The War. It keeps the experimental nature of their entire discography, but really refines it. It also leans a bit more EDM and definitely switches up your expectations.
Every member in this group can sing very well(even rappers) I mean they have the holy vocal trinity(Chen,Baekhyun,D.O) And they also musicians and actors Ex.Chanyeol(one of the rappers and lead vocal) can rap,sing,play guitar,piano,drums,bass,can Dj and is also a producer and songwriter (he also designed the EXO logo)
I kinda agree that some b-sides do sound experimental in this album (except Heaven & Stronger) but after a few listens, your brain starts to realize what direction the songs are going. In my opinion, this is a very laid-back album. Their recent releases are better for me and I hope you'd still check them out.

This is the most experimental album of EXO, every album is different and for every taste . The best sold is "Don't Mess Up My Tempo", around 2M copies sold , with a very strong sound, rich in high notes.
Was huge fun listening with you, tbh I ve never heard some of those really experimental songs from this album, which means they did not become so popular, however, Im sure you will fall in love with life performances of Artificial Love and White noise, they are both very hot songs and they never seem too long to me, rather the opposite :P

This one is full of experimental ones but I looove them. It’s like my brain became an aqua slime and they are playing with it, stretching it, mixing it, moulding it. When this album came out, I thought OK finally an album of exo that I’ll hate. But no I hated it for like two days, and then my brain couldn’t stop playing those songs and I ended up loving EXO more than ever understanding how talented they actually are, more than I imagined.

This is an interesting observation of Ex'act because I've never thought of it as experimental especially when it came out. Yeah it has werid beats but compared to the kpop experimental stuff they do now it's really tame. This album is a lot exo fans top 3 in albums which is hard to choose because all of them are so good. EXO is more of an r&b pop group which why I love them. Anyways interesting observation.
I definitely suggest you watch these live!! Especially for White Noise and Artificial Love, everything kind of comes together with the dance and their live vocals, if that makes sense.
Some of the songs are meant to be enjoyed with live performance. That happened for me for some of the songs where I was not feeling them at 1st listen but after the live... I loved them!

This album is my favorite exo album loll its one of those sticky albums where you either love or or you hate it. Sm loves experimenting and pushing limits which is smth i really appreciate even when it's a bit much 😂 I have to say the real crowning glory of exos albums is exodus. All the classics are on it, we love her 😌 Also all their winter albums(NOT Christmas). Not a single skip on any of them
This album is more to R&B and sweet songs. It's more like relaxing playlist something like that to me. Well, EXO is known for their vocals so I appreciate this album, the harmonization and melodies are pretty much my type of music. Maybe you love hype, dancing type of songs so you could try listen to "The War" album. EXO songs sounds nothing like kpop literally. EXO has their own unique sound so it's pretty difficult for people to accept it? idk man but i'm lovin them a lot

Tbh Exo has an album for all tastes, their albums are so different from each other, when I first became an Exo-l this was my least favorite album but nowadays this is the album I listen the most tbh hahaha If I were to recommend an album for a first try of Exo I would recommend Obsession (if you like experimental and dark) The War (if you like edm?) And XOXO (if you like pop songs; it's imo their friendliest album, but all the songs are sooo good) Nevertheless all their albums have some RnB haha Also I would say Ex'Act is the album that has songs with the least up and downs, like you mentioned; if you don't like that, other albums will be fine for you on that aspect too😉
If I could objectively say which one is their best album I would choose Obsession, but it's still very experimental so I think a lot of people might think it's not their cup of tea at first try, but as their best album I HAD to include it

My 2nd favourite album is Obsession which is definitely quite experimental and concept/storyline heavy so you might not be ready for it yet hehe. Kai of Exo is in a friend group with Taemin, and Jimin of BTS. He studied ballet as a boy. He and Taemin are best friends as they where trainees with a passion for dance together. I think you would love his solo work as well!

This feels so wild! You have listened to so much different Kpop artists and EXO is new for you! I'm baffled but happy to see you react to them! They are very versatile and have such a wide range of different style through their discography, so I recommend diving into their music and visuals with lots of healthy curiousity. If one song does not hit, some other might do so and with a bang. I myself can remember their debut and have followed them ever since and oh boi it's fun to see someone get to know them.

I sincerely recomend you songs like Artificial Love and White Noise LIVE (also Stronger), like these songs live where just AMAZING, they have their LIVE album in spotify and there is a reason for that. I believe you like more upbeat songs that chill sounds so I don't know if EXO is your cup of tea so, if you still reacting to them I recomend their live concerts before youtube lyrics videos as they don't do justice to the boys. I have a similar feeling abt Exo... some of their songs I really love but some of them are just not for me. But given you seemed to like the same ones as me, I'd suggest you check out "Tempo", "Ko ko bop", "obsession", "the eve", "love shot", Baekhyun's entire solo discography, Kai's "Mmmh" and "Peaches" to see if you vibe w/ these better😉
They are actually one of the best singers in kpop, actually their main 3 vocalist are top 5 best vocalist in whole kpop, your birthday twin is the best vocalist ,voted by idols themselves.I feel like the music quality seems very different, Live performances is very very good , but I recommend you to listen "The war " or "Obsession" these are top tier , as they are RnB based that's why rap isn't that prominent in their group , their rapper are lead vocal material.but in last 2 album they play with rap more.

EXO, aside from being the VOCAL KINGS of KPOP, are also the most versatile group and has the most diverse discography in SoKor music industry. Hearing multiple genres in a song is normal with EXO because they do 50+ genres and sub genres of music. Thus, I'm surprised that you're reacting to a whole album without having a little knowledge of their musicality, coz it's really gonna be a rollercoaster ride esp if you're used to quintessential Kpop boppy music. Further, EXO members have solo stuff and each of them is different from other members'. That's how versatile this group is.
D.O. is also my bias (ultimate bias since EXO's debut in 2012 tbh). D.O. is called the RnB king of kpop because of his insane vocal agility and incredible vocal tone. He finished his military service last year and dropped his first solo album. His solo debut album is one of the most succesful kpop solo albums out there. D.O. goes by his real name, Do Kyungsoo, for his acting career. D.O. is one of the most acclaimed idol actors out there, breaking the idol acting stereotype. He has won the Blue Dragon award, that is one of the most prestigious acting awards in South-Korea. This year 2 new movies and one kdrama is coming out where Kyungsoo is the main lead. The Stray Kids members are known for being big D.O. fanboys especially, Changbin, Chan and Felix!

They don't repeat concepts, and they are always innovating and experimenting with songs, beats, visuals, styling, etc. EXO is a prime example of that, and EX'ACT is definitely experimental. They have other more easily digestible albums, especially upon first listen. Please give them another listen, I am sure they will be able to suck you in with one of the albums/songs/MVs.
Yes, the live stages changed my mind. Those songs grew on me as well! Especially Artificial Love! I can say I don't like that song at first. But I found myself recently playing that on loop! I don't know what's wrong with me. 🤭🤦♀️
Thanks for the Exo reaction! The Ex’act album is one of their most experimental albums and it is actually one of my top favorites from Exo! I’ve seen so many mixed reactions especially within the fandom, there are those who love it from the first listen, some grow to love it overtime and for others it simply isn’t their cup of tea and that’s completely fine! Music is totally subjective thing.if it doesnt click you right no matter good it is . It just dont work for you. But when EXO happened to me i realized the power of vocals. There are exo songs that i just dont like but i can not bring myself to skip because of their vocals they make sure to grab the attention.anyways i hope you will give exo another chance. To be on safe side i would recommend you exo's winter albums ,those queens can never go wrong.

I loved your month of Shinee and now your look into Exo - my two favorite groups! All the members of Exo can sing, even the rappers have beautiful voices so if you’re here for gorgeous vocals keep checking them out, definitely recommend live videos! This group, being also from SM, is super good friends with Shinee. Jonghyun helped vocally train Baekhyun and Chen and Taemin and Kai are one of THE iconic best friends in kpop, so many cute compilations of them!
Finished the video and wanted to add that yes exo definitely has a lot of experimental sounds and Ex’act is definitely one of those. I’d recommend checking out Obsession and The War, both still have their experimental moments but they may be more your vibe? Or even Don’t mess up my tempo!

Ooh I see where you are coming from exact for me is more of a grower I was also lukewarm to it the first time I listened to it like you mentioned in the reaction some of these songs are stuff you haven't really heard before.
For me it took me like 3 listens to properly get into the album because you don't really know where the song is actually going but once you figure that out after a few listens that's when the production starts to sound more interesting you will pick up on something new every listen which is what makes the album more dynamic tbh this is a really good production for something released in 2016 it's like a breath of fresh air when you listen to albums from then.
Maybe this is not an album for you it's okay exo had a huge discograpy that you have barely scratched the surface to.
Production wise check out some of their more recent comebacks my favorite is obsession and don't mess up my tempo/ love shot album pls use the oohmaya channel for exo lyric videos.
Exo has and still is experimental so that is something that is consistent through their albums .
While I think Monster is definitely one of their stronger and iconic title tracks, I've honestly enjoyed the B-sides more of any other album they've had including the repackage for this one. But each album has their own color so who knows if you'd like them. I like EXO Love Shot 5th Repackaged Album (2018) and OBSESSION (2019). The title tracks on aren't my favorite but the B-sides could honestly stand on their own. Their older albums are good too but for new fans, the structure may feel dated. It's also good to note a lot of their B-sides are structured for performances like their concerts. Sometimes the songs are cut short or remix to be longer.

EXO is considered to have one of the best discographies in Kpop. They got vocals and variety. They offer every single genre.
Your Obsession album first listen was recommended to me but I thought I'd watch this first because it's your intro to EXO. I kind of understand what you're saying with some of the songs not having enough variation and peaks and valleys, but very much so with first listens of their songs and somewhat older stuff in particular. I think besides it becoming more of an SM staple, it has also become a lot more common in kpop for there to be much bigger switch ups within a song. I've had the experience of listening to their songs for the first time and liking them or loving them but like you say not seeming to have much variation. But I almost think that helps the song to a degree- again, in my experience and, well, with my taste. Other kpop songs that have a lot of changes and moments (especially by other groups and non-SM groups to me) on repeat listens, personally, I end up skipping around to those moments and not being as into the song overall. And eventually I'm not even interested in playing the song because I just want to hear one cool part that I quickly get over or my intrigued reaction plateaus. Which is such a different experience to re-listening to EXO songs, where I recognize/hear more sounds and layers, and love and appreciate the songs even more. And it's just nice to have albums to like reliably listen to- I can just press play, listen all the way through, just chill or do other things, and still enjoy listening, but not go back to skip around or change what's playing a bunch of times. I'm not sure if I've worded and explained this well but even with EXO being my favorite group and thinking they have one of the best discographies in kpop, I still understood what you were saying with this first listen and intro to them as a group. Though, when I say "EXO" and "discography" I'm thinking about *everything* EXO related- as a group, subunits, solos, collaborations, SuperM, etc. There is a lot to explore from them so I don't think fans/viewers nor you should be discouraged. I mean, obviously you've already checked out another album so I'm going to go back to the Obsession reaction after I'm done typing here, lol. So, yeah EXO is my ult group, Chanyeol is my ult bias, but Baekhyun is also a bias for me in the group. He is my favorite vocalist period and his solo stuff is what I listen to the most from all their solo work.
There are probably other comments here saying this but there _is_ a repackage of this album with a few more songs.

I'm so happy you've finally gotten to exo! I think you'll understand artificial love and white noise better if you watch the live stages of those songs. I also think you'll really enjoy exo's album The War. It keeps the experimental nature of their entire discography, but really refines it. It also leans a bit more EDM and definitely switches up your expectations.
Every member in this group can sing very well(even rappers) I mean they have the holy vocal trinity(Chen,Baekhyun,D.O)
And they also musicians and actors
Ex.Chanyeol(one of the rappers and lead vocal) can rap,sing,play guitar,piano,drums,bass,can Dj and is also a producer and songwriter (he also designed the EXO logo)

Experimental / demo album but magnificent live performances in concert..
I kinda agree that some b-sides do sound experimental in this album (except Heaven & Stronger) but after a few listens, your brain starts to realize what direction the songs are going.
In my opinion, this is a very laid-back album. Their recent releases are better for me and I hope you'd still check them out.

This is the most experimental album of EXO, every album is different and for every taste . The best sold is "Don't Mess Up My Tempo", around 2M copies sold , with a very strong sound, rich in high notes.
Was huge fun listening with you, tbh I ve never heard some of those really experimental songs from this album, which means they did not become so popular, however, Im sure you will fall in love with life performances of Artificial Love and White noise, they are both very hot songs and they never seem too long to me, rather the opposite :P

This one is full of experimental ones but I looove them. It’s like my brain became an aqua slime and they are playing with it, stretching it, mixing it, moulding it. When this album came out, I thought OK finally an album of exo that I’ll hate. But no I hated it for like two days, and then my brain couldn’t stop playing those songs and I ended up loving EXO more than ever understanding how talented they actually are, more than I imagined.
EXO is one of the best kpop group of all times.. They are called vocal king of kpops.. Their live is out of the world... Definitely need to check more of them

This is an interesting observation of Ex'act because I've never thought of it as experimental especially when it came out. Yeah it has werid beats but compared to the kpop experimental stuff they do now it's really tame. This album is a lot exo fans top 3 in albums which is hard to choose because all of them are so good. EXO is more of an r&b pop group which why I love them. Anyways interesting observation.
I definitely suggest you watch these live!! Especially for White Noise and Artificial Love, everything kind of comes together with the dance and their live vocals, if that makes sense.

This album is more to R&B and sweet songs. It's more like relaxing playlist something like that to me. Well, EXO is known for their vocals so I appreciate this album, the harmonization and melodies are pretty much my type of music. Maybe you love hype, dancing type of songs so you could try listen to "The War" album.

My recommendations would definitely be The War album (power repackage: my personal fav :) and Don’t Mess up my Tempo (Loveshot repackage).
My 2nd favourite album is Obsession which is definitely quite experimental and concept/storyline heavy so you might not be ready for it yet hehe.

I sincerely recomend you songs like Artificial Love and White Noise LIVE (also Stronger), like these songs live where just AMAZING, they have their LIVE album in spotify and there is a reason for that.

I have a similar feeling abt Exo... some of their songs I really love but some of them are just not for me. But given you seemed to like the same ones as me, I'd suggest you check out "Tempo", "Ko ko bop", "obsession", "the eve", "love shot", Baekhyun's entire solo discography, Kai's "Mmmh" and "Peaches" to see if you vibe w/ these better😉

OMG! I'm so happy to see you check out exo. they are my one and only ult group and my bias is D.O., I love his runs, R&B, and soulful voice. Anyway, cant wait to see more exo 😍
EXO, aside from being the VOCAL KINGS of KPOP, are also the most versatile group and has the most diverse discography in SoKor music industry. Hearing multiple genres in a song is normal with EXO because they do 50+ genres and sub genres of music. Thus, I'm surprised that you're reacting to a whole album without having a little knowledge of their musicality, coz it's really gonna be a rollercoaster ride esp if you're used to quintessential Kpop boppy music.
Further, EXO members have solo stuff and each of them is different from other members'. That's how versatile this group is.
D.O. is also my bias (ultimate bias since EXO's debut in 2012 tbh). D.O. is called the RnB king of kpop because of his insane vocal agility and incredible vocal tone. He finished his military service last year and dropped his first solo album. His solo debut album is one of the most succesful kpop solo albums out there. D.O. goes by his real name, Do Kyungsoo, for his acting career. D.O. is one of the most acclaimed idol actors out there, breaking the idol acting stereotype.
