I can promise you all that Michelle trains with so much love, care and warmth with her dogs. But this is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. To be able to perform at such a high level needs loads of concentration and focus. Does Peak look unhappy at ANY moment to you? Do you think Michelle didn't praise and reward her afterwards? Because I can 100% assure you she did, but in work mode different people need different methods to perform.
Johanna Sarkar My point exactly. A few minutes of complete focus in competition mode is only a small part of the whole. And what is best for some other dog isn’t perhaps what works best for another. And CLEARLY this is their ”in the zone” and she is a happy dog from all I have seen.
So impressive to see a dog that at the end of February had a litter of puppies perform like this.
I can see some mentioned below that the handler is extremely focused and collected, and more dead pan in her mimics than perhaps peppy, smiling and casual looking. But that doesn´t mean that during most of her training or under many other circumstances in competition or training she can have different mimics or need for encouraging a dog between exercises. Like now when Peak was in heat and she hopefully knows best about her dogs state on that day, so likely she really felt and saw that they were in a certain zone of this works best for my dog right now, and if I give her certain other energy and/or "smiling looks" on the field, she will tend to tip over in a certain direction instead, and risk losing her fantastic focus on the task.
And that might not look really happy or soft towards the dog during these few minutes of work to us. But we don't know that it means anything more than it might look severe, strict and not that joyful to a bystander. But to her how she looks if they are in a zone of a certain energy and focus that works for that dog to perform well and still feel good about it, is probably a non issue.
And when the work is done I'm sure all the smiles, praise, treats, cuddles and play in the world were there for her dog.
But hey, sure, she does look strict here and aren't smiling, praising the dog a lot between exercises. I just suspect there is a perfectly good explanation for why that was the zone they were in, and went with.
