  • It's time for a road trip -- today I'm on my way to Wollongong, to check out the amazing cactus and succulent collection at the Wollongong Botanic Garden. Join me as I meander through incredible cacti, towering Agaves, inspect a few choice Euphorbias and peruse an immaculate collection of Haworthia -- and spend some time soaking up the warmth in their beautiful glass house.

    Hello to you and everyone who visits your channel. My name is Gabriel Titus, I am 45 years old, I am a man from Romania, especially passionate about succulents, cactus, but also the rest of the plants from all over the planet. Thank you for the most positive, well-made, well-explained series about your collection, but also from other places, such as this captivating episode, which honestly fascinated me because I was able to see plants that I might never have seen if you and other enthusiasts had not presented them here on UA-cam In conclusion, I would like to say that I would like to be friends even if we live in different continents. God bless you ,

    Hi, Florida USA here. I used to have a century plant, looked similar to the huge agave starting to bud. When I had mine it was so huge! Easily 5 feet across. When it was sending up the death shoot, it grew 2 feet a day!! Absolutely amazing!! Thank you for your enjoyable, informative videos

    Feeling a little bad about it, but cracked up when you said, "I suppose if you're going to graffiti a plant, you could do much worse." Kind understatement, there. Around here, we have a horrible problem with people carving up our American beech trees, killing creatures that could easily be living to 300+ years. I do hope that the paint washes off of that poor plant, soon, and that the malcontent youth stop carving it up.
    This was a truly spectacular garden. Thank you so much for bringing us along and showing it off!

  • @asp921

    Thank you for the fun tour!! Interesting relationship between the agave and the aloe pups- i Wonder what the mechanism is. Is it just protection from the elements or is there a mutual benefit going on? ✨

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  3 місяці тому +2

      I suspect it’s protection from the elements - they call them nurse plants, or something like that. Basically there’s a nice, shady, moist micro-climate under the edge of the agave that’s perfect for nurturing seedlings, and in this case the aloes have won the jackpot by ending up there.

    Thanks for the fieldtrip, boss. Really enjoyed it. I would have expected you'd need to go further West for this, Perth or something. The nice thing about being based here in Canada is that any desert succulent I might collect will never survive outdoors so there's no real threat of it getting out of hand if it went rogue shooting seeds out the door one day like down under.

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  3 місяці тому +1

      We've got a pretty good climate for most cacti and succulents around Sydney.. although I'm sure Perth would be even better suited for many.

    Cacti are typically a lot hardier than all Euphorbias

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah it’s an interesting thing… there are clearly some climate similarities between Wollongong and the areas of South Africa & Madagascar where those Euphorbias are from. I have no doubts many of those cacti in the glasshouse would have been fine outdoors, too, although they’d probably be more marked and weathered.

    I liked taking a trip with you and the other grower. I have been following you for some time now. I just bought 2 Caudex plants, you showed some on a video. Waiting for them to come in.
    I do have a question, my string of pearls is sitting under a grow light, maybe 2’ feet from light. I have noticed that some string are dead or dying- why? Most of plant good. I water once a week.
    My other string of pearls sitting on kitchen windowsill and doing 😂the same. Why??? What am I doing wrong?

    nice botanic garden! though there seem to be more mislabeling than the one you mention at 21:25.
    For instance , at 19:39, I think the label should say Astrophytum Ornatum... since A. Capricorn's spines are very long and messy, while those of A.Ornatum are shorter, straight and orderly.
