I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS TYPE OF VIDEO FOR AGES! Sorry for the caps. But Ive been struggling with hair for a month now. Ive tried a billion different ways and I got stuck on them all. This seems the easiest and was actually what Ive been looking for. Cant wait to try it out! THANK YOU! Praying that this works for maya 2018!
Awesome tutorial, Daryl! I was introduced to Tube Grooming by an ex-Disney character artist, and used it for a stylized Supergirl model, but I ran in to some issues that, had I seen this video earlier, I could probably have avoided. Or at the very least limited. Thank you for this video. Much appreciated!!
Still useful, been doing a hairstyle in Xgen Core and fixing intersection is a pain, with the tubes method this might allow u to model the shapes and take care of the intersections before converting them into guides, i wonder if it needs to be nurbs tubes or poly tubes will work just as well.
Hi, Excellent Video! One question, though. Around 2:17 you say that it adds guides inside the tube "the way you have it set". How do you set that and is there control on how many guides it puts in the middle of the tubes? Thanks!
Hi Daryl , can you make a quick video in how to use curves to shape the interactive groom splines in maya 2017, cuz I've been trying a lot of things, reading the documentation and I cant seem to get it to work, or how to use the convert to interactive groom, thnaks.
Hi Daryl, I was wondering if it would be possible to use a tube that's skinned to joints to drive the tube groom. Will xgen follow the tube geometry if it's animated? I want to set up a workflow where one could hand animate a braid or something but have xgen follow that animated geometry.
Hi Daryl, thanks for all of the tips! Just having major issues with ptex files. I have tried all of the work arounds I can find on the web, exporting as FBX, assigning new material, clearing Xgen preview, even setting the environment variable to projectfolder(Xgen was writing to the app location and pref folder on OSX) none of them can seem to create this ptex file. Any thoughts?
Hi Daryl, amazing videos of Xgen. Just wondering to know how to solve the same issue as Seán, but without having to rebuild the tubes. The problem is when i use the Tube Groom tool my guides follow the tubes the wrong way, from the tip to the base, and i don´t know how to reverse them. When you said reversing the direction of the curves, what did you mean? Help would be very appreciated :)
when you're making hair this way let's say i want to make the back hair of my character whit twin tails but this back has a certain desing first would i have to make different tube strand to achive what i want and second did this tube need to be unwarp ?
I know I'm way late to the party, but Daryl(love your Maya Mondays), have you ever come across the ptex file error that Marcus Driessen and Aurélia Deleplanque mentioned in this thread? I'm having the same problem. I keep getting an error when writing out my region map ptex files- "// Error: XGen: Trouble closing ptx file. Can't write to ptex file. I'm on Windows 8. Thanks!!!
Sorry I have not. Maybe the file already exist and XGen can not overwrite it? I would try making a fresh project just to make sure it's not a permissions problem.
+Ardie Johnson I think I found a workaround for this problem. After painting the map -> click on select tool (arrow, thus deselecting 3D paint tool) -> click çlear Xgen preview in Xgen window -> save ptex map
Can you comment on how these tubes are generated in the first place? Seems like the way to go to get specific hair shape needed for longer hair. I know about extruding shapes, faces, nurb circles along curves but is there a more elegant way of doing this where you can extrude polys along a number of curves at once? Paint effects maybe? Very nice video by the way. AI always start with your vids first before venturing further on any new topic, feature of Maya.
daryl obert Thanks for reply. wasn't sure how to do the extrusion for a fair number of curves at once though. Pfx allows this through 'get last brush settings' and curve utilities quick and fast, plus stays connected so that tube shape profile along curve can be modified, bulged out and tapered as needed before converting to polygons, deleting histroy. Thank you for your vids series, always very insightful.
legar83 Oh so there is something called pfx for generating tubes? I have wanted to create these tubes too but I have a lot of curves & doing it the traditional way is very difficult & time consuming. I will really appreciate the help.
Thank you for this great tut. I have a problem with this workflow though. i am using maya 2016 and rendering in vray. and every time i am trying to create tube groom from my shapes the generated curves for some reason are reaching the floor and it its all getting messed up. i checked and it seems this curves are coming directly from an edge of the sculp on which i made the description. Maybe you know what is the issue?
The guides I create only have 5 points. Is there a way to make them have more to follow the shape better? Can't use rebuild because that only increases the points *after* the guides are already shaped, and won't reshape them to the tube they were generated from.
there's a great example on Digital Tutors: Simulating Hair using nCloth. The first couple of lessons show how he generates the tubes for many curves at once before he converts them to poly strips and then ncloth.
legar83 OMG That would be awesome! I have been trying to make detailed hair like in Final Fantasy games & have been trying to generate a lot of tubes at once. So this is going to be a HUGE help. Thank you very much.
Pratik Parija you can sign up for a month and quit. I do that all the time. Every so often i'll upgrade and get the ability to down load example files which really helps then downgrade or quit. they don't seem to mind.
Hello, Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question about Part of path doesn't exist error. When i create map, there is a error tells me part of the path does not exist. I googled and tried to edit the path, but it does not work. i don't think my path has any naming problem. here is the path D:/WanFile/theloudhouselily/lilyupdate/xgen/collections/haircollection/hair/paintmaps/regionMask/skull.ptx Please help me. any suggestion will help. Thank you very much.
this is so frustrating..i cannot for the life of me figure out why maya always say path of file does not exist, even with absolute or relate file paths, project is set and it STILL cannot save a color map. It struggles with other ptex maps from time to time but it absolutely wont save a colormap from ptex... anyone else ever figured out a solution? Everyone is always asking if i set the path file name correct but its not the issue. I really want to get the coloured clumps to work so i can have more refined control.

There is no good free tool for hair creating yet, everything is very hard. The best way to create a good hair for games is just block out form u need and after do a good textures, the better way is to create something like Maya'n textures library they created after 2017. Ornatrix is overpriced, maybe GMH2 only - but still doesn't tested. Xgen looks like extremely hard tool for very hardcore hair creation and its bugged a lot

this is the best Tutorial I've found so far. thank you so much,. you saved me so much time.
I learned a lot, felt like I was back at school. Perfect tutorial thank you so much.
Appreciate the video Daryl. Not a lot of videos on this stuff.
One of the best tutorials out there, thank you so much :)
Wonderful, guide splines and expressions both work nicely with xgen

Thank you Daryl! You just teach me a lot in a very few minutes! That's really awesome! And it worked perfectly! ^-^
Hi i know this is was posted a long time ago but is this still in date? This is a great vid and i was going to try this out on maya 2018
efficient and helpful, thanks for your work.
Thanks that was a very useful tutorial

After I press the generate in tube grooming, instead of those thin long tubes. Its hair hair appeared. How and why it happened?

Look at your UVs on the tube, I bet they are not correct. Bottom of the tubes UVs should be at 0 in the UV window.
daryl obert Thank you very much! Your bet is correct. Now my work is much easier! Thank you again, love you
I talk about how to run tools on a list of objects in the Maya Monday post:

legar83 Awesome, glad paint effects did it for you and thx for the nice comments. I normally make the tubes with a simple extrusion down a curve.
daryl obert Thanks for reply. wasn't sure how to do the extrusion for a fair number of curves at once though. Figured it out it was CV freq.
Any idea how I would transfer this game ready hair?

after i've added the "Tubes" the little "x" appear at the end of my mesh not above the surface .
The direction is based on the uv layout.
Try flipping it around

It works very well :)
When I go to select the region map I don't have colors afterwards. Does anyone know why?

The eyes orienting to camera. Creepy.
how is it done?
It's aim constraint
my guides are huge and and once their generated it look nothing like that?
Its all based on the scale of your file. With that said you can also change the thickness of the guides after they are made
Can you share a p-tex file? =D
