Today is Neo's BIG DAY!!! He got cochlear implant surgery 3 weeks ago because his hearing aids were not strong enough to provide him with proper hearing and today is his cochlear implant activation day. Baby Neo was born Deaf with severe to profound hearing loss, and hasn't heard anything his whole life. Today is a very special day because it is his hearing birthday, it also happens to be world hearing day which makes this extra special. We are excited to embark on his new hearing journey, we look forward to starting his speech therapy and continuing to learn ASL, because he will always be part of the Deaf Community.

So my brother is deaf. So my brother name is Storm ( yep his real name and my real name is Misty, so Misty and Storm) anyways when my brother turned one, he was sick and had mono, they gave him a shot and he lost his hearing! No my brother will never be able to hear. We all took night classes for sign language when we were younger and American Sign Language 🤟🏻 is an amazing help to people who are deaf! My husband is active duty Military and I work on base and we have some workers that are fully deaf and I am the only one that is hearing and can sign to them!

It's a Long process to get to a "normal" level of hearing. You have to remember two things (that I learned across my journey), he's going to hear at the same volume but is more like an artificial/robotic sound (therefore the importance in speech therapy and patience).
Also, the brain get used to not hearing so if you put the hearing aid to someone with a profound loss or a cochlear implant and immediately put the normal sound the brain gets overwhelmed!
I lost my left hearing 100% and suddenly at 15yo. I'm 31 now and started using hearing aid in my right in 2015, until that point my right was 100% ok but it started to get down really quickly. Right now I have only 20% of my right side.
I explain all of this so you can understand my experience. I was a 100% hearing teen until I was 15. I was not candidate for cochlear in that side. My brain got used as much as it was possible to one side only. When I got my first hearing aid almost 7 years ago, at special Olympics health program, with my coach,I had to run shortly after and I started bowling my eyes because I realized that I could hear my feet on the street and I didn't even knew when I stopped hearing that! I rediscovered a ton of sounds. While my hearing became more and more low, right now I have a cross system. My left aid is just a micro that send info to the right, remember the right only have 20%. So I've been using this system for more than a year now and still my brain can't handle the 100% . Because my loss is so profound now the noises are different, even voices that I remember how they used to sound. Sometimes I have to take the micro out because it can be really overwhelming to have all the info in my right and I still don't recognize sides. 🙃 I have friends with cochlear and friends with aids in my special Olympics team. We all have a different journey! I'm the only one who have the road back, the others were born def or profound hearing loss. But we all have things in common for example, sides can be tricky, our back sometimes no matter what we don't respond to sounds behind us. But the most important thing is what Abella said, we all can hear our loved ones tell us I LOVE YOU ❤ and just THAT is worth everything! It's a long and frustrating road but always remember what Abella said she wanted to tell her brother! That's the key that's what worth the tears and the hard moments.
Looking forward this precious boy and I know his life will be awesome because he have the best parents and sissy advocating for him!
