    This concept would be great for those with physical impairments of which otherwise gardening for them would be impossible to do.

    Mine are all 22 inches high...Those metal bins come either as a 12", 17" then it jumps to 32" - the mfgs should make something inbetween around the 22" to 26" anc then jump to 32"...ultimately one of the main reasons for raised beds is so you don't have to bend down too much. I built my own 4'x8'x22" (20 beds)...and I decided on that height because of ease on my back. Because the boards are 2" thick, I've developed a bench that is portable and latches onto each of the wooden walls, so I can move the seat anywhere I wan't to and sit comfortably, weeding, harvesting and soforth, so I technically don't have to bend at all when I sit on my portable and movable benches. I can't do that with the thin walls of a metal raised bed, they would bulge out and break.I don't mind the extra soil that is needed for the higher beds, I'm OK with that. 17 inches are no problem for rabbits, wood chucks so on....you can comfortably grow anything in a 22+ inch bed.

      There's definitely advantages and disadvantages to each type. The metal beds last longer, but I do like the idea of being able to sit on the side of the wooden beds.

      @@LazyDogFarm I have wooden raised beds at our in city residence, they are about 15 years old and still perfect. The ones I mentioned in my previous comments are at our lakehouse, and those are going into 5th year. I like the seat, but you can even sit on the 2" boards, but you can't
      do that with the metal ones without pinching yourself or lean off them. That's the part I don't like. I do have a few metal galvanized steel ones 3'x7'x12"....I keep my Rhubarb in those, Black Currants, and Blueberrys. But everything else are built out of 2x8x8 with one 2x6x8 in the middle row, just to give it some variety. Beyond that, I have about 40 qty. of round buckets, 24 inches diameter, 22" high. Gardening is my hobby, nothing else....that's where anyone can always find me (except for winter, nothing happening here in Minnesota except for ice fishing on the lake). And if that's not enough, I collect miniature & dwarf conifers (hence the "tannenbaumgirl, and I'm originally from Germany (met my hubby there while he was in the Army) and perennials in my rock gardens at the lake. My husband and I are both retired, and keep busy with our 8 grand children. Keep gardening, it's the best past time activity and stress reliever, keeps you moving, and it's great food!

    i couldn't garden if not in raised beds. dream of having fancy ones like those. i use old plastic and folding chairs with storage totes in them. i only grow tomatoes and corn in the ground. old gutters work great for strawberries, onions, radish, petunias.

    Travis ...I would say the opposite.. the kale and larger plants with bigger root system should be in the deeper planters . All your lettuce and small stuff should be in the 16" planters.
    Not on the convenience of height to work on plants ...just my opinion great looking set up! Keep crushing!

    Due to a medical incident, I'm no longer able to garden low. I'm building 32" tall planter boxes from Pallets. They are perfect for my height, and allow me to grow anything, and I don't have to get on the ground to garden.

      No clue, although I think it might have to do with those composted wood chips that we used to fill the beds.

    Cost factors in filling the beds is the deciding factor for me! All of mine are 12" and took 80 yards to fill...

    Which veggies are recommended to grow in a taller raised bed? I'm trying to blueprint what I need to get for potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, so far. I'm also thinking of growing herbs on a separate stack of pots, vertically,

      Potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, lettuce -- anything that grows lower to the ground.

    I think it would have more to do with the root system than anything .carrots an potatoes vs tomatoes

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm Рік тому +1

      That could play a role as well. I guess it depends on how deep you plant tomatoes.

    My one thing about raised beds is filling them. I feel like 32 inches is just way overkill. Do roots even utilize that space?

    • @ale347baker
      @ale347baker Рік тому +1

      No they don't. But you can compost beneath it, and that will retain better moisture after its decomposed. The height is for your comfort.

      What Ale said. It's just a matter of whether you need something tall for ease of planting and harvesting.

    I would say the exact opposite…. Lettuce for example has a very shallow root system and all that soil is a waste. Use the deep beds for something with a much deeper root system.
