- A playthrough of Activision's 1996 adventure game for PCs running Windows 3.1/Windows 95, Muppet Treasure Island.
If you don't want to read everything I talk about below, let me give you the short version up-front:
It's utterly fantastic, and it's everything you could hope for in a Muppets game.
For the less-short version: Muppet Treasure Island is the perfect example of how to make a game for children. No punches were pulled in its development: the production values are amazing and the Jim Henson Productions was directly involved in creating it, all of the original actors are here for their roles, and it successfully pulled off the movie/software tie-in that most developers still can't seem to get right very often - without merely repeating the movie. The thing that it really does right though, lies how respectful it is to its audience. It doesn't treat kids like morons like so many games do, and it's genuinely funny and entertaining. I didn't get bored once recording this - I actually really enjoyed it and legitimately laughed several times. There aren't any real "puzzles" to speak of - it's based wholly around exploration and completing tasks through experimenting, and the few mini-games are simple, clear, well put-together, and never out-stay their welcome.
The real mindblowing thing, though, is just how damned good this game looks and sounds. The graphics look just like they should: the FMV characters seamlessly blend with the backgrounds, and everything looks enough like the show that the technology driving it all but disappears. Nowadays that might not seem like a big deal, but back in 1996, processing power didn't easily afford that luxury. It only required a 486/33 with 8 megs of RAM and a display capable of 640x480 at 256 colors - and with a 486/66, it was pretty smooth and fast - Muppet Treasure Island was an incredible looking game when it was released. It still looks great, 21 years later. About the only thing that really gives away its age is the low color depth, the static camera, and the cursor.
But that's besides the point. It's genuine, good-natured fun without being vulgar, gross, or violent, and it's got enough nods and subtle innuendo that parents will be just as entertained by it (anyone wanting to sit down to a family friendly game with a little one would be well served by loading this one up and plugging the computer into the living room TV. It's just as entertaining as the movie it was based on.
And hey, it stars Billy Connolly and Tim Curry alongside the original Muppet voice actors. Can you really ask for any more authentic? Or Awesome?

I remember the scene with the night sky and stars on the ship. As a kid it gave me goosebumps and a strange feeling of adventure. Watching this today I get the same feelings!
My parents had to do the skull thing for me lols
meee tooooo oh my god.. amazing scene!
Been searching for the soundtrack of this moment for years and still haven't find. It's chilling!!!
This whole thing was a nostalgia bomb, but when it got to "The CD you want looks like this" I lost it.
I am smiling at my computer UNCONTROLLABLY! I used to looooooooooooooooooooooooove this game so much! I think this was my introduction into PC gaming. So many good memories! :)
I had memories of playing this. One of my favorite games on computer when I was around 5-6
one of my all time fav games growing up!!
Same same same. So much nostalgia. Times are soooo much better back then 😢😢❤❤❤
Do you know where I can play it ??
It's wicked funny and well-written, it looks impossibly good for its age, it features the entire original cast, and it will legitimately entertain you just as much as it will your kids. I honestly can't say enough good about Muppet Treasure Island. I smiled the entire time I played it.
No dislikes yet! Awesome!
Will this play on a modern computer?
@@calebcombs3669 try it and find it
@@calebcombs3669 can set up virtual machine
@@calebcombs3669 It was recently added to Scummvm, so all you need are certain game files and that program no matter whether you're running Windows, Linux, etc.
Dang, this game aged really well. One of the first games i got into as a kid in the 90s. Love the mix of hand drawn looking art and live people. Thanks for recording this
I LOVED this game as a kid! I would play the pie mini game for HOURS! Looked so realistic at the time. Such a well written and entertaining game!
Oh man... nostalgia overload. I was 8 when I got this!
One of my favourite childhood games. I remember always hitting the customers with the pies because it made me laugh seeing their reactions. Wish I hadn’t lost the disc so I could play it again
Me tooooo
I'm a huge Muppet Treasure Island fan and never even knew about this game with fully fledged voice-acting and muppetry... whoever directed this is a genius
OMG!!! I remember the pie shooting scene from the demo! Thank you so much for this. You’ve made me so happy
This is a brilliant game and excellent addition to the film. This is what the muppets should be doing, adapting themselves into classic stories
Watching this was a bizarre blend of nostalgia and frisson. So many childhood memories that I forgot I had.
god i love the look of these interactive point and click games from the 90s. as a kid it gave me such an unparalleled sense of adventure and actually being there and discovering stuff, and it's still awesome!
They don’t make em like this anymore girls and boys
2:31 Billy Bones: And no one knows to this day what happened to the treasure or the treasure map. Maybe you'll find them, eh, Hawkins.
Hawkins? (laugh)
Gonzo: Tell us another adventure, Mr. Bones. My favorite's the story of the one legged man.
Billy Bones: Ah, the one legged man. I told you never to mention that cursed beast! Now get back there and finish brewing my stew. I feel the horrors coming on. Be gone!
Rizzo: The horrors? I think I'll be going now.
My family got our first PC in 1998 and this was my favorite game on it at the time. I always shot the customer at 18:46 with the pie. For some reason she just annoyed me.
me too LOL!!!
I used to hit all the customers with pies. Their reactions were so funny 😂
Aaaah the memories of playing this game with my 2 brothers!! Awesome game ❤️
This is one of those games (like LEGO Island) where, at least from an adult's perspective, there isn't much gameplay and the whole experience is quite short, yet the atmosphere makes it worth playing and you end up wishing there was more to see and do.
The talking skulls used to terrify me as a kid.
Oh my god the nostalgia. I remember getting so scared after waking up and hearing about the mutiny. What a great game. I used to play it on my grandmas computer over and over.
3:43 Billy Bones: The black spot! No!
They definitely could've made a video game based on the movie, too.
Imagine playing this on Genesis, SNES, PS1, Saturn, and Game Boy.
I miss childhood so much!!!!!!!!!! This was a staple for me, alongside the Freddi The Fish and Jumpstart 1st and 2nd grades!!
I played this game over and over and over as a kid.
5:21 A message from Captain Flint.
I must've played through this game dozens of times as a kid. Brilliant game.
So much memories! Thanks for bringing them back!
the way 34:22 took me to Spongebob
God i LOVED this game as a kid
3:11 Blind Pew: Billy Bones, it's me, Blind Pew, coming to settle a score! (evil laughter)
I remember playing this all the tiiime
If you're missing any stones they turn up on the beach. You have to go through the cave, then double back to the beach and the game throws them at you without explanation.
Oh my.. suddenly I'm a kid again
I wish these games would get a this gen console release
This takes me back soooooo much! Love this game soooo much!
SO much nostalgia! :D
Ahh the memoriesss
bring back my youth and the 90s
Thank you for sharing
I remember playing this to death on my old pc. Tiny i think it was. Amazing game ❤️
Do you remember an american pc magazine that had in the cover the game muppets treasure island ?or maybe it was the inside cd game, and it had a full gory review of the game quake, the writters put photos of brains and blood to make that quake review, it was a good magazine but i don't remember the name of the magazine or the number.
I would watch all of this but I gotta go brush me tooth
10:58 Follow the bouncing cheese 🧀
Think you can put up a rip of the 3 CD's? Would love to play this again.
Benbow Inn, Established 1875? I thought this took place in Pirate times?
1:07:21 - 1:07:26 I for the longer time thought he said "Quiet. Dream come true. Shhh."

What are the names of the song played by the Pirate Piano at the Spyglass Inn?
This video has half of the songs in all, but the ones I know are: “Drunken Sailor,” “Scotland the Brave,” and “Sailor’s Hornpipe.”

Will this play on a modern machine?
Yeah, use Doxbox and it runs fine
Hey guys! I'm dying to play this game! I used to play when I was younger, but I no longer haver the CD. How can I have acess to the game? can I download it somewhere? Or just have to buy it again?
considering how old the game, i recommend downloading it and running it a virtual computer (win 7 would be best) windows 8 and up don't appear to able to handle the 64 bit graphics
Go to old-games.com and you can download it from there..I did that and it worked on my Windows 10 computer :)
madmonkey4eva That site is awesome, well worth a bit of money for a subscription for the sheer volume of good stuff they have
This Care Bears game sucks because you play this game with your face
damn. every sound, every voice line, every frame, is a friggin time machine
I played this through at least 20 times growing up. It was a damn good game for the mid 90s.
Dude they even got Tim Curry in this game, now that’s detail👍
"All that glitters, ain't gold, Hawkins..."
Lots of fond memories from this game. Thanks for doing this one.
25 years old
This was my childhood!
this was one of my most favourite computer games ever, I'll never forget it, I wish they would make computer games from all the Muppet movies
As much as I love modern technology, I really miss classic PC games.
There’s something to be said for making art within strict limits! I look forward to nostalgia for contemporary modern games in 30 years
Modern technology allows you to continue playing classic PC games. You don't have to miss them.
@@resmarted Case in point, this game was recently made compatible with Scummvm.
Captain Flint's voice gave me nightmares when I was growing up...
Completely forgot about this game. I’m having vivid nostalgia with this video
i have all three of the cds to this day omg i’m gonna cry
Nobody:
Ghost of Captain Flint: HAAAWWWKINS!!!!! 5:22
Great game. Completion of the game and getting the chest with scenes of the movie was awesome.
Open up bang bang on the door know your in there.
Seeing this in 2021 is appropriate since we all got the madness last year..since..
WE ALL GOT CABIN FEVER!
My Nana has this on her old Gateway when I was young, and I had so much fun with this game. Watching this is very nostalgic to me. I watched this whole thing and I remembered it all, and I haven't played it sense 96'97. It certainly was a fun game as a young kid.
Not many views! I only played this once, went the whole way through in one sitting when i was like 9 years old or so.
Holy Shit. I haven’t seen or played this game in 25 years! The memories flooding back!
I only played the demo included on the A-10 Cuba! disk.
I didn't understand anything since english wasn't my language but boy it was so great.
I totally forgot this game existed till my brother brought it up at dinner tonight. I loved this game so much!
When I was a kid I used to go to the public library and play this all the time. Love it!
This game fascinated me. I feel like I would just skip over to the final cd though for the best gameplay lol
I still have all the 3 CDs. One of my all time favourite game 😁👌👌
THE BLACK SPOT
Lovely early Win95 games.
This game has an amazing artwork!!
My childhood right here. Thank you.
I like this part in 10:40. Look out BELOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW! Crash!
SPLAT!
Molasses! What a mess.
I prefer the movie.
56:18-56:40 what is that supposed to be?
Good question. Looks like the tails of a coat, maybe?
You've captured this perfectly on OG hardware and I love it!
I just seen this recommended to me. I love MTI and I had no idea there was a game. It looks impressive.
I never knew this game existed until now in late August 24th, 2023, 8:28PM Eastern Standard Time 😮
That Parrot is the same Puppeteer of The Cat in The Hat from The Wubblous World of |Dr. Seuss.
Does the game actually close out of itself like that?
