I own both a 1911 and a P-38 (1942, by Mauser). The P-38 is so well designed, to fit in your hand, it's a true pleasure to shoot, and the de-cock safety, and the 'chambered round' indicator are great features. I'll take it over the .45.
In the end, I think hickok says it best: you like 9mm then the P38 is your baby. You like .45 ACP, the 1911a1 will serve you well. Neither is better. They are both amazing firearms that could hold their own against almost anything made today. Thanks for the frank discussion!
1911a1 was by far the best handgun though until the p38 came out 30 years later. And still the p38 wasn't next gen or better, just a handgun on the same level.
@@mver191 I always wondered why Germans never adopted the .45acp since the p38 only holds 8+1, the 1911 7+1. I guess since the 9mm luger had a faster speed it was more advantageous since they used 9mm in their smg

I was told by an old Vet that the US military guys actually preferred the P38 over 1911. Watching the vid, I noticed the 1911 kicks up a lot more then the P38.
I don't doubt that a bit. Most service people do not grow up firing a 1911; they've shot revolvers only more than likely, provided they'd shot ANY sort of handgun. The 1911 takes some getting used to before one falls in love with it. Not really the time and patience in military training for that, I'd guess. The P39 would be less recoil and easier to shoot well for somebody who has limited time on the trigger of a semi-auto pistol.
@@hickok45 I also heard the the training on the pistol, at least the P.08, were trained single handed while standing sideways to the target. It makes since considering the angle of the grips. I have a P.08 and it’s more accurate then my S&W M&P9 Performance Center.
Loved the comparison. I have two P-38s and one M1911-A1. Both models are neat pistols. I also love watching sprint arrive in Tennessee via your channel. What a beautiful place.

According to Evan Marshall, there is a 1% difference in stopping power in the two cartridges when using ball ammo. So basically, no difference at all really. So Jeff Cooper was full of it when he used to say: "they all fall to hardball." Personally, I would rather have a Browning Hi-Power than either of these.
+LK Campbell Yup, 9mm vs. .45 ACP, hollow point vs. FMJ, if the gun works and the shooter is trained with that firearm, then that's all that matters in my opinion. People worry too much about the little things that only differ a percent or two.
+LK Campbell I carry .9mm because the guns are more concealable. .45 is more effective. But more capacity in .9mm, concealment ability, less recoil. Makes the 9 a good choice. And a 9mm 147 grn HST is very effective. But.. compared to the .45 HST 230 grn the .45 wins every time.
from a Kinetic energy standpoint yes, both have ~480 Joules of kinetic energy BUT the .45 has alot more momentum and copper, lead mass to rip bigger wound channels the momentum of the .45 is 3.8Kg-m/s compared to just 2.74Kg-m/s for the 9mm. I think that Damage to the target is an aggregate balance between Kinetic energy and Momentum and they both have the Same kinetic energy (1:1) but the .45 has 40% (1.4:1) more momentum so 1.4/1 = 1.4 so the .45 does 40% more damage overall.
Soldiers were first taught to shoot the 1911 with the middle finger and point with the index. However the issue of soldiers pushing the lock pin while firing caused the change to the index finger. Just a little history, love your channel.
The P.38 has a great advantage. You can bear it with a round in the chamber, uncocked, safety off. Nothing can happen because the firing pin is retained by the trigger safety device. To fire you only pull the trigger. And it has a little pin above the hammer that indicates whether there is a round in the chamber.
Jeff Hardymon actually it isnt much different from the 1911 if you lived in that time period. soldiers wouldnt just drop the magazines on the ground anyway as they needed it later, so a mag change on the 1911 tskes about the same time. the heel release on the p.38 exists to encourage keeping the magzine and not giving the illusion of it being discardable.
I carry a 1980 P1 variant and while a heel release would lose in a range competition, it's feels pretty intuitive once you learn them. It's fully reliant on your support hand, however the nature of it's placement means you have positive feedback to feel when it's locked in. So from it's pointer grip stance, to it's mag release; it's really a testament to how guns then were designed around being a physical extension of the shooter. It's crazy how we went from that to Glock, modern (brick on a stick) designs.
For the WW2 era the Browning Hi-Power / P-35 completely dominates both of those guns. It´s also the only one that was and still is a worldwide commercial success. P-38 all the way. I love me some 1911, but my favorite pistol from my collection is a Spreewerke P-38 made just before the invasion of Berlin. You can tell because you can easily see all the machine marks. It's such a piece of history, a weapon of a (very rightly) dying part of German history. It was taken off of very young German officer who surrendered during the invasion of Berlin. I've never fired that pistol, but the first pistol I fired that was not a .22 was a P1.

S&W borrowed a lot from the P38 Walther and the 1911 to create their model 39 & 59 series in the 1950s. In fact P38 magazines fit in a S&W 39 and only need a small square hole cut into to it to function in the S&W 39.
I have a 1911 (Springfield Armory .45 ACP) and shot the P.38 and the P-1 a lot, the latter during my service within the German Army from 1994 to 1996. BOTH are great and timeless handguns, so Hickhok is absolutely right. Good and cool vid as always.
Thanks for talking to me at the gun show last week! I'm sure you're busy but i really enjoyed meeting you! I'll continue to watch your show at work. I'm not a dog in real life, only on the internet.
I find the P38 to be easier to unjam in case of a bad round. The opening on top is much larger. There are also 2 slide recoil springs (one on each side) versus a single spring in the 1911. I don't know if that's a plus or minus.
Just bought one. It's marked AC 42 which means it's made by Walther in 1942... it's a bit unique though because the finish on the gun resembles the earlier pre-war models as opposed to the more crude finish on wartime productions. Apart from being fully blued and polished, it also has these really redish/brown grips which I have not seen before. It's marked with all the right stamps and as far as I can tell it is all original finish.
Both pistols the P38 as well as the 1911 are superb sidearms. My personal choice from the point of a European is that the 9mm Para rounds are big enough and powerful enough. Federal Pistol Target Shooting competition is mostly restricted to 7.65mm Para and 9mm Para and never met a fellow shooter who was moaning regarding the magazine release, despite the magazin release button is the slightly faster way for dropping the empty magazine by using only one hand.
+Granny Torrelli - I had a golden rule about hand guns, any pistol I bought no matter how big or small I would conceal carry at a minimal once..... Then I got some black powder civil war replica revolvers from Pietta and broke my rule... Some things should just be left for fun range visits and homage to the past :P
I have all three WW2 classics here, the 08, the P38 and the 1911. My father brought the 08 and the P38 from WW2, I bought the 1911 new in the late 1970s. I enjoy shooting all three pistols, but I don't want to use any of them as my EDC gun. For that I have my Glock 22.
The M1911A1 was still in service with Marine support units all the way up to the early '90s as it took awhile for the M9s to be issued throughout the fleet. My old GySgt and Captain carried one during Desert Storm. That old gun lasted a lot longer than 80 years. Great gun.

You seem quite biased towards the 1911... and the P38 was produced until 2000, and was replaced in german military service in 2004. In total the p38 served 8 less years in military service, but it's service was nearly 2 decades more recent than the 1911.

The world came to many realizations very rapidly from their tinkerings. How they figured things out though is just a terrifying thought. No. The P38 is a direct improvement in reliability, safety and comfort. No point comparing them
The Luger has style but it’s far too finicky and intricate. The P.38 defeats the P.08 in every metric.
Thanks for talking to me at the gun show last week! I'm sure you're busy but i really enjoyed meeting you! I'll continue to watch your show at work. I'm not a dog in real life, only on the internet.
I have a ww2 1911 my grandfather gave me. it will be in my family forever.
Considering how many firearms we have seen Hickok45 shoot, it is absolutely incredible his hearing is so good lol
Didn't know that Waldo made guns back in WW2
Now I have both. I’m happy
I find the P38 to be easier to unjam in case of a bad round. The opening on top is much larger.
There are also 2 slide recoil springs (one on each side) versus a single spring in the 1911. I don't know if that's a plus or minus.
Hmmmm the P38 is the great grandpa of the M9 Beretta. So I would say the the P38 is still in use.
As usual, another informative video...*sniff*...about weapons that are practically impossible for me to own here is Australia, dammit!!!
Just in time to watch with my coffee.
The P38 had so many new design features. Like Hickok said the Beretta 92 still had a lot of them. It was very innovative.
Personally the 1911 was ahead of its time of ww1 but the walther p38 was ahead of its time in ww2
I prefer handguns with a little more history. I personally concealed carry a .54 caliber 1742 flintlock for self defense.
Ok bud. You do you.
Just personal opinion, I like the 1911. Those old gals are just sexy platforms.
Ernest Sheffield eh the p08 is more elegant
The M1911A1 was still in service with Marine support units all the way up to the early '90s as it took awhile for the M9s to be issued throughout the fleet. My old GySgt and Captain carried one during Desert Storm. That old gun lasted a lot longer than 80 years. Great gun.
sgtjarhead99 A heavily modified version of the m1911 is in current use with the Navy SEALs.
How about a high power vs 1911
If you remove the magazine disconnect, the Hi-Power becomes superior
Wasn't the P38 double action? I missed that bit.
Not to complain, but could you give the measurements also in metric. Sorry up in Canada 3/10 of an inch is hard to get my small brain around.
K thanks
+wyatt claypool Or do it yourself! 1in=2.54cm x 3/10=.762cm convert to mm is 7.62mm.
+Slayeroffoes just wanna point out that it should be .762cm, don't wanna go n confuse people now!
If you had bothered to read my comment, I arrive at .762cm and then convert to 7.62mm.
+wyatt claypool im Canadian and work more in Imperial than Metric. But im a machinist so maybe thats why xD
The P38 (as the modified P1) is still part of the Basic Training in the Bundeswehr today
Wtf echt.
How about a video how all handguns of WW2 compare to each other? Nambu Type 14, M1911, P38, C96, Modell Schnellfeuer and the TT-33?
Backtoast c96 was replaced by the Luger which was replaced by the p38 long before ww2
It was still used, since th P38 was only used by squad leaders.
Don't even bother with the type 14 it is the worst pistol of all time.
Great video... Have owned both and love them both! P38's are fantastic to shoot
Nah, those ear protection is just for show. After all those wars you fought starting from the american revolution, you're deaf af.
When you get to our age there is not much hearing to protect
As usual, a great review of a couple of classics. Pardon my bias, P38/P1 was a great handgun but IMHO cannot compete with the 1911. I love my 1911s.
Hot damn.
What is it about the 1911 that makes it so... sexy?!
Oddly enough, a Mormon...

Envsan ew anything but attractive, more like dull
You drank too much.
0:01 I am sure I am not the only one who anticipated the “hahahaha” after realizing he was dumping the magazines.
I want both
P38 is very fine and Nice Gun....
Such a sexy 1911. Its a shame that guy scraped up the side of it
+MsckMatt I guess the for the time the guy scraped it, it was probably the equivalent of a solider scratching the side of his Beretta today, which wouldn't be a big dealio.
P38 is sexy, but nothing beats the elegance and simplicity of the 1911. Passing flame vs. a family member you can count on.
P38 is better than M1911
Not really
@@larrywize why?
You seem quite biased towards the 1911... and the P38 was produced until 2000, and was replaced in german military service in 2004. In total the p38 served 8 less years in military service, but it's service was nearly 2 decades more recent than the 1911.
Hey Hickok do you enjoy smoking pot?
+Mackbros24 haha
+Mackbros24 The elderly can particularly benefit from medical cannabis consumption, especially if you are tall like Hickok you need the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis.
+Joseph Kroon Clay pot.
Great video guys, the classic videos are the best (my opinion). Thank you for all you and John do for us.
I'll take the 1911.
DannoCrutch 1911 is a been there, done that firearm. although extremely effective! it's so dull and boring
Yep. Fully agree. Just got a damn soft spot for them. I suppose if I had to choose one, I'd go much more modern.
Love these types of videos. Thanks Hickok45!
Spoiler alert. The 1911 already won the war.
And the best comment award goes to...... Mandra!!
+Madra to be honest german technology was decades ahead of everyone else but they ran out of resources.
+sgthl only in some aspects. There are many many test, inhuman though they may be, that revolutionized mechanical engineering, weaponry, and even Medicinal/Medical. The world came to many realizations very rapidly from their tinkerings. How they figured things out though is just a terrifying thought. One has to ask themselves if it was the work of genius, or in reality sheer dumb luck at another's expense.
I guess you could always say that many of their findings were out of necessity so that they could complete their task. Invention is the offspring of one's own needs, or in Hitler's case, wants.
Germany used 1911 in ww2 also you have remember the states weren't the only country making them
This just emphasizes how hopelessly outdated the 1911 really is. It only remains popular for irrational reasons.
1911 all the way
Nope
Ђорђе Добрић p38 zauvek ;)
I don't know about anyone else but I would love to see a Bond Arms Brown Bear California Edition with all the barrels. Love the channel. Keep on Keeping on!
thumbs up if you'd rather have the 1911!👍👍👍👍
Yes He Lives in Tennessee However He is Not in Tennessee at The moment, He is in Tulsa Oklahoma at The Wanenmachers Tulsa Gun Show !!! The Largest Gun Show in The World and I Should Know I Ran into Him There and Even Got a Pic With Him and Yes He is Just Like You See on Here. Very Personable and is He Ever TALL !!!!!! Thank You Mr. Hickok for Taking The Time to Talk to Me and My Friend Paul and to Pose for The PIC !!! : )
+Kelly Dardeen Thanks. Good to meet you all. I must have run into a couple hundred of our funny looking subscribers as I cruised around there slobering over all the collectible, classic firearms.! :-)
1911 always wins.
Nope
+mad aboutbikes: i Agree, 1911 always wins. One of the best handguns ever.
It is the hand gun I would most like to own.
+mad aboutbikes Lets be honest the 1911 was the best pistol when it was designed, but the SAO system is outdated.
If it comes to engineering germany always wins xD
The best thing is: own both 😁
Yes. Dad brought back a lot. guns, grenades , first anti tank rocket and knives.
I carried a P-38 when I worked for a local college campus police in the early 1970s . I never had anyone argue with me when they saw it in my holster . never had to use it on the job but people were afraid of just seeing it . best pistol I ever had .
Military is actually not forced to use FMJ. The US has never ratified the treaty on the ban of hollow points. In fact the US military is using hollow point as standard ammo for the new HK service pistols.
The 1911 is such a sexy pistol. It will never go out of style.
