      Sometimes the aftershocks can be worse than the quake itself.

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA 7 місяців тому +4

      @@PaulaDautremont This, but also, the direction of the shaking makes a difference. Aka milder shocks shaking the wrong direction can make it impossible to move without falling tec. so there's even a whole science to that :'\
      I've been in one with evacuation, a year after the big tsunami in a disaster cite city with the coast in sight. in winter in the cold. Not fun, and it was not even such a big one! At least many things are built smartly and e.g. turn off automatically when it starts shaking. There's barely time to remember what to turn off as to not return to an e.g. burnt down house.
      It helps to stay calm alongsides everyone else, but apparently it's still hard to react, if you do not have the drill down and your emergency stuff ready to go at all times. Thankfully ours was so small n short, we could return within hours. This looks worse!
      At least, having dismantled some of those disaster site houses .... they're wooden frames with thin drywall boards and stuffing in between. If any of that stuff collapses over your head, you'll get hurt, but your chances to survive are not so bad, unlike in any house here in Germany (cause we had no need to build in that light manner).

    Japan's expertise in earthquake preparation and response is truly impressive. Their advanced technology for infrastructure reinforcement and early warning systems play a crucial role in protecting lives and minimizing damage. Additionally, the country's extensive public education programs and regular disaster drills contribute to the remarkable resilience and calmness often displayed by citizens during earthquakes.

    • @slactweak
      @slactweak 7 місяців тому +3

      All of that is paramount to reducing casualties but, when you experience as many earthquakes as the citizens of Japan experience, it's no stretch to understand that their resilience and calm comes from much more than mere infrastructure and public education. It's the same as the resilience and calm that the residents of Tornado Alley and Dixie Alley exhibit when a major tornado ravages their areas. Much the same as the residents of Japan, the residents of TA and DA have seen enough devastation, often enough, to have formulated an individual plan of action, should they survive the latest catastrophe. It's not so much external influences but the inner strength and determination of the people themselves and it is that strength and determination that manifests itself as resilience and calm.

      @@denizaktas4624thanks for letting me know. Yeah probably 7.5 would make an amazing amount of destruction in Los Angeles. And I agree with you it occurred to me that it seemed like if tectonic plates are moving on the other side of the Pacific that it makes sense that there would be some commensurate movement over here. I always consider the little ones good news because they're easing the pressure slowly. And are hopefully not foreshocks.
