I LOVE LOVE THIS! We lived in Port Martines, the house we lived in is now an Airbnb! Then we moved on base but once I walked from base to Praia. I was 12 and my mom about killed me when she found out!
My father lived either on Lajes base or right off of it from early 1956 to mid 1959 (his 7th to 10th grade years, I have his report cards in a scrapbook from those grades.)

As desolete as it was 50 some years ago when I was stationed there at Lajes for year and a half. But clearly there has been some development to provide for nature tourism. At that time there was only one restaurant in Angra harbor. The climate in Madera is much milder for much of the year where tourism has boomed with many coming from Europe.
