Hank and Lou Ashby are my personal favorite duo. I think their dynamic drives the more serious themes of the show.

loved the essay mate. still up to this point one of my favorite shows. just rewatched it for like the 7th time cuz nothing comes close to the mix of comedy/drama in this series. u did some great work :)

Okay man, You convinced me. I always loved the iconic Runks/Hank ‘buddy boy’ relationship but you are right, that was never about character growth. When it came to pushing Hank and showing him what a commitment to being OUtSIDE the white picket fence looked like, It was all about Bates.
Thanks for taking time to check out the project! These two always seemed like the best pairing throughout the series however I will do a video examining Hank and Runks in the future to see how they compare.
Here's an interesting fact you may be unaware of. Bates is played by David Duchovny's real life best friend. Who was actually not really much of an actor. He and David went to highschool together. And was known for doing the mangina in the locker room. David and him helped come up with Bates as a character. Bates originally existed on the page as a Stephen King-like novelist who was a drunk but David came up with the magina being apart of it and The Actor playing Bates adlibbed alot of the craziness as well as the pansexuality aspect to the character. Originally the character being a Stephen King-like character had him quite abit older as well. David loved working with him so much that the character repeatedly became a fixture of the show. But you seem to have noticed it without noticing by saying it seems the most genuine.

Jason Beghe was once a full-on Scientologist. He is well known for walking away from Scientology and being highly critical of the 'religion'. Yes, he and David Duchovny are best mates in real life.
I thought he played a very good character.......... he was more realistically crazy than Stu Beggs.
One point I think that was overlooked is that at the end of Season 5, it is Batesy that pushes Hank and Karen both to be with each other. It's also worth noting that Batesy is really the only other established fiction author we see on the show. One opportunity I think the show missed out on was showing how Hank was viewed by other fiction writers. The show alluded to the fact that Batesy was the superior between the two, but I would have been interested to see how other novelists who came up around the same time as Hank viewed him.
Damn good call out. That definitely does bring alot to their dynamic for sure.
There was the David Wilder character that popped in at the end of season 3 as a potential candidate for Felicia’s martial hall pass. He was a novelist with a fawning respect for Hank and asked him to blurb his book despite the tense situation they were in - which seemed exactly like something a novelist would do!
@@swordgun25To me Hank represented one of those grunge era "angsty bad boy lol" writers (which hardly exists) who ends up influencing major figures, but who's work is really more niche even though he has some mass appeal, he's not Mainstream appeal. The guy everyone wants to be, but isn't necessarily popular with everyone.
@@exspiravit6920 Yeah... I agree with that. I have to admit that the concept of being read by a small group of people with good taste and high creative ambition while sailing over the heads of the mass market still holds so much appeal. Can't help but wonder what writers (and it kind of has to be a writer) past or present would be in that category.
Best duo in the show is by far Hank and Charlie and if were talking about recurring character, def Hank and Lou

Jason Beghe, the guy who plays Bates and Duchovny were friends for years. Beghe actually got Duchovny into acting. You're probably picking up on some off camera dynamic. Another fun fact: Watch "Monkey Shines" with Jason Beghe before his voice was fucked up beyond repair due to an intubation gone wrong.

Good series, good video. Bates might be my favourite character in all of TV. Wouldn't mind a spinoff.

I couldn’t agree with you more, and I couldn’t agree with you less. The chemistry on screen between Hank and Batesy stems from the fact that Duchovny and Beghe are best friends in real life. Because of this, the interaction between the characters is natural and genuine. One of Beghe’s favorite shticks is the mangina thing, and they found a way to work it into the show.
Why I couldn’t agree has much to do with my problems with Season 5. How could Hank and Batesy be friends while Hank is still carrying a torch for Karen? The duo is doomed before it ever begins.
